1 BA (Hons) Business Economics Programme Information WELCOME TO NEW STUDENTS As Dean of the Cardiff School of Management, I m looking forward to welcoming you to Cardiff Metropolitan University and to the School s state-of-the-art home on the Llandaff campus in Cardiff. This is going to be an exciting start to your academic studies. Joining Chances are that you are going to be exposed to many new things when you arrive. It can be quite confusing. Once you re here, we ll take you through the details. So please make sure that you join us during the induction week. The schedule is as follows: Monday 21 st September, am start Cyncoed Campus, National Indoor Athletic Centre (NIAC) Week One Welcome This is where you ll get the chance to rub shoulders with other incoming students at the university. There s no need to come to our Llandaff Avenue campus on the Monday. Tuesday 22 nd September, 9.00 am start Llandaff Campus (Room E002 for Business Economics) Cardiff School of Management induction These events are specifically designed for your programme. Activities are planned for the entire week, getting to know the staff and an introduction to life in the university. You ll be given a more detailed schedule when you arrive, but please plan to spend the whole week with us. Experience suggests that you would miss out on a lot if you didn t. On-line Enrolment Enrolment is an important process which confirms your status as a Student. You can complete the online self enrolment process from any computer through our Self Service system. Please note that in order to self enrol; your status must be Unconditional Firm (UF). Please begin your enrolment process by going to step-by-step guidance is provided.

2 This process is essential in that it will allow you access to your student loan (if applied for), payment of fees, programme information systems and importantly enable you to obtain your Student ID Card. A scheduled time for collection of your ID card will be given to you during your Induction: Meet Your Tutor session. 3 Welcome to the BA (Hons) Business Economics Programme Dear Student, Welcome to the BA Business Economics at the Cardiff School of Management. There will be plenty of opportunities to celebrate and enjoy this new and exciting chapter in your life. It is important to have fun, but it is also important to be responsible. An important part of that is to make sure you put enough effort into your studies. In any case you may encounter problems along the way and it is important to realise that we are here to support you. Please make sure to contact your personal tutor and/or myself as early as possible, when that happens. If you have problems regarding a particular module, it is always a good idea to talk to the module tutor first. As you will see from the Induction Programme you will be expected to attend a series of events during the week. Although not all of this will be demanding or exciting, you will be expected to attend, as it prepares you for your future studies. In order to prepare for the forthcoming academic year I am enclosing a list incorporating recommended reading for some of the main areas you will be studying together with a brief outline of your programme. 4 Programme Objectives The aims of the programme are: 1. to provide training in the principles of economics 2. to stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in a variety of contexts 3. to provide a firm foundation of knowledge about the workings of economic systems and to develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings 4. to equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and problems of economic policy 5. to enable students to undertake complex, dynamic and strategic analysis 6. to develop in students, through the study of economics, a range of generic skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment 7. to provide students with analytical skills and an ability to develop simplifying frameworks for studying the real world. They should be able to appreciate what would be appropriate levels of abstraction in order to study a range of economic issues. 8. to provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to further studies in economics, related areas or in multidisciplinary areas that involve economics 9. to generate in students an appreciation of the economic dimension of wider social, political and environmental issues. 10. to generate in students an appreciation of the wider context in which management takes place
