CARDIFF SCHOOL OF EDUCATION MA Education MA Education: Leadership and Management MA Education: Educational Research and Practice MA Education: Managing Community Practice Course Joining Information Academic Year
Welcome from the Dean of the Cardiff School of Education A very warm welcome to Cardiff Metropolitan University and to the Cardiff School of Education. Undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the School are organised in one of the three Departments: Teacher Education and Training; Humanities; or Professional Development. In addition, there is also a vibrant English Language Training Centre (ELTC) that houses around 300 international students per year. Your future employment prospects are central for all programmes of study and, whichever subject you have decided to follow, you will find dedicated staff who will work extremely hard to ensure that your time at Cardiff Metropolitan University is profitable and you have every opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills. The School has over 90 full-time staff and a range of visiting lecturers. In total there are over 1600 full-time students, making it one of the largest Schools of Education in Wales and the UK. Each year students and staff celebrate significant academic achievement in a research-led teaching environment. Central to this success is the support you will receive from the lecturing staff. As a result, it is usual for the relationships you make during your studentship to last very much longer than just the duration of study at the University. It is our job to encourage and support you to fulfil your academic and personal potential. On behalf of everyone in the School, I wish you every success in both your studies at the University and in your future professional careers. Professor Dan Davies Dean of the Cardiff School of Education
Dear Student Welcome to the MA Education programme. We look forward to working alongside you. Lectures Lectures will commence during the week of the 28th September Online Enrolment Enrolment is an important process that confirms your status as a Cardiff Met Student. You can complete the online self enrolment process from any computer through our Self Service system from 1 st September If you applied through Self Service you will already have the necessary login details for self enrolment, otherwise these will be sent to you via . Please note that in order to self enrol your status with Cardiff Met must be Unconditional Firm (UF). To begin your enrolment process, please visit Stepby-step guidance is provided. This process is essential in that it allows you access to payment of fees, programme information systems, and enables you to obtain your Student ID Card during Induction. Induction will commence at 5pm on Tuesday 22nd September 2015 at the Cyncoed Campus. Please report to the Main Reception on the Cyncoed Campus where you will be informed of the precise induction venue. During induction you will meet with your Programme Director and be introduced to the programme and the programme team. Please bring with you the following: Your degree certificate(s) the original and a photocopy A letter from your head teacher/employer confirming that you are a member of staff in a partnership school/organisation (if you intend to take advantage of our partnership discount arrangements) Tuition fee payment or bank details you will be able to set up a direct debit for payment of fees if not eligible for partnership funding. Accreditation of Prior Learning Students may apply to accredit previous M level study within the MA Education programme. This may provide them with exemption from certain modules. Applications should be submitted before the programme begins. In exceptional cases, applications will be accepted within three weeks of the commencement of the MA Education programme. These applications may be submitted at the discretion of the programme director. Applications should include: the transcript of previous results (available from the awarding university s registry) including the number of credits and their level and module details and learning outcomes of the previous programme. The panel considering the application may request additional information/evidence.
Late applications will not be considered. Accreditation of National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) Students who have successfully completed the NPQH may submit a bridging assignment allowing the qualification to be accredited within the MA programme to the value of 60 M level credit points (2 modules). Any student wishing to do so should apply as above. Further information is available from the programme director. Programme Outline Detailed information about the course structure will be provided in the online programme handbook, available after registration via Cardiff Metropolitan University s Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle. The following brief information may be of use to you, however, as you prepare to commence your course. All part time and full time sessions are delivered on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings at Cyncoed Campus the exact delivery day(s) for each module will be confirmed at induction. Teaching and assessment Module Handbooks Separate module information is provided for use with each module. This will provide advice, key information, assessment details and submission dates as well as up to date reading lists. Teaching Strategies A programme that claims that it is operating at Master s Level should be able to presume that its students: [a] Are capable of working independently; [b] Will welcome the chance to be self-directed learners and to set their own goals; [c] Will wish to carry out on-going evaluation of their learning. These principles also recognise that in their working lives our students frequently operate with a considerable degree of autonomy and are themselves responsible for the learning of others. This must mean that tutorial staff develop teaching and learning strategies that recognise the maturity and experience of their students. The programme will include the following activities, approaches and techniques in order to maximise learning and create an enjoyable educational milieu: Self evaluation and profiling Group work and group evaluation Student-led seminars and discussion Paired or group learning (sometimes on a self-help basis) Team-building exercises Discussion Experiential and reflective exercises Case studies and evaluation Self-directed private study, reading and open learning Formal lecture input and discussion Internet based discussion
ICT The programme makes use of the virtual learning environment Moodle to support students learning. Lecture notes will be placed on Moodle for reference and additional materials made available through this facility. Students are urged to make use of the Internet and to communicate with tutors and each other. Extensive ICT facilities exist at Cyncoed and students are welcome to use the open-access suites. However, access to the Internet from home or work will be a great advantage and save the student much time. Programme Philosophy The programme has been designed to provide those working in education with an opportunity to develop and reflect upon their own practice. Continuing Professional Development is an important part of an educator s life in the twenty first century and we hope that our MA Education programme will support school-based or professional Continuing Professional Development (CPD) but also open windows into new developmental areas. We aim to provide a programme that is stimulating and relevant to the needs of the profession and remains at the forefront of developments in education and educational research. Attendance and punctuality Attendance at all lectures is compulsory unless agreed in advance with the module leader. Please arrive promptly for the beginning of sessions, ready to begin work. Please remember that you are working amongst a group of professionals and conduct relationships and conversations with tutors and fellow students accordingly. It is the responsibility of students to check the Moodle module notice board regularly for announcements and to keep abreast of changes to the programme calendar should they be necessary. The programme director will not inform students individually of such changes. Financial Obligations The part-time programme involves two modules per year. Each thirty credit module costs in the region of 675. The exact amount can be checked by visiting or by ing tuitionfees@cardiffmet.ac.uk. Students employed by partner schools in Cardiff Metropolitan University s Initial Teacher Education and Training (ITET) programmes are currently eligible for financial support for one module per year through the School of Education s partnership arrangements. Please bring a letter of confirmation of employment in a partnership school from your head teacher if you wish to take advantage of these arrangements. Preparation for the programme It would be helpful to begin some preliminary reading and Internet research to familiarise yourself with current educational issues. To this end a short reading list and list of Internet addresses are included. You might also like to start to consider a topic or area of your own practice that you would be interested in investigating during the first module. Employment Prospects Graduates of the programme have an excellent chance of obtaining promotion or moving into new areas of the teaching profession. To date, graduates have secured
deputy headships, headships, advisory posts, have moved into lecturing in higher education or work with the schools inspectorate or been appointed to senior training posts in industry or public service.
