4 STUDENT INDUCTION HANDBOOK UNDERGRADUATE INDUCTION HANDBOOK Welcome from the Head of Department Welcome to the Department of Economics at the University of Leicester. You have joined one of the largest and most successful economics departments in the UK. The Department prides itself on a reputation for teaching and research excellence that few other economics departments can match. You will be taught by leading experts who have both an excellent academic reputation and real world experience. Our faculty is internationally renowned and its members have acted as advisers and consultants to many international and national organisations, including the European Central Bank, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the Central Bank of Poland, the Central Bank of Greece, the European Competition Commission, and a number of UK Government departments. The close relationship between research and teaching is one of the great advantages of studying within the Department. We offer ten specialist degrees in economics as well as joint degrees with Mathematics, Politics, and Management. We also have a thriving postgraduate programme, including one of the largest Ph.D. programmes in the UK. Our Department has a very large group of students, including many from overseas. I am sure you will be making many friends here and I hope you enjoy your time with us. With so much choice, we think that this induction booklet, as well as the online student handbook available on the Departmental website, will be useful in helping and guiding you through the study arrangements, opportunities and facilities available both in the Department and the University. I am certain that your experience in the Department of Economics will be productive, memorable, and successful. My colleagues and I are always available to assist you if you have any further queries, or any suggestions that may make your experience even more enjoyable. I look forward to meeting you all over the coming year. Christopher C Wallace William Tyler Professor of Economics Head of Department

6 STUDENT INDUCTION HANDBOOK UNDERGRADUATE INDUCTION HANDBOOK 2. Induction Programme 2.1 An Induction for BA & BSc Degrees During the first week of semester one there are no lectures or classes in economics for first-years. Students enrolled on the ten single-subject undergraduate degrees participate in an induction programme which includes events taking place across the week beginning the 28 th September. The induction programme introduces students to staff, tutors and the working methods of the Department. Issues relating to study skills, learning and teaching (including computer-based learning) are addressed in a variety of ways. Additionally, talks are given by the Head of Department Professor Chris Wallace, as well as representatives of the Economics Society, the David Wilson Library, and the University s Career Development Service. All students are expected to attend these sessions. The Induction Programme timetable can be found in section 2.6 of this handbook. It is also available on the web at Registration (for new students) The University s Registry will already have sent instructions to you about how to register but we hope to reiterate the most important elements here. Step 1: Online Registration You need to register for your degree programme online at Instructions on how to complete the process can be found at including further information and contact details should you need any help or advice. As a student of the University you will be provided with a computer account that gives you an e mail address and grants you access to a wide range of electronic resources and computing facilities. Access to these services is available both on and off campus for the duration of your studies. Upon completion of the registration process, your computer account will be created, and you should receive an confirming your registration (usually within 24 hours). Confirmation by text message is also possible if you provide a mobile phone number. Please ensure you remember your username and password. Step 2: Visa Checkpoint This is applicable to INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ONLY (i.e. those students who pay the international fee level). Once you have completed online registration, you must report to the University s Visa Checkpoint in the Charles Wilson Sports Hall before proceeding to Departmental induction. The Registry should already have provided you with an appointment at which you will be able to complete the Checkpoint. Further information can be found at The Induction Programme Monday 28 th and Tuesday 29 th September 2015 PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST COMPLETE ONLINE REGISTRATION BEFORE YOU CAN ATTEND THE INDUCTION WITH THE DEPARTMENT All new undergraduate students should report to the Lecture Theatre in the Astley Clarke Building (at the end of the ground floor corridor) at the time listed on the induction timetable in section 2.6 of this handbook. Please note that you will not be able to participate in the induction programme with the Department outside of the times advertised. A map of the campus can be found at

7 STUDENT INDUCTION HANDBOOK UNDERGRADUATE INDUCTION HANDBOOK Please ensure you have completed the online registration process before arriving. If you do not, you will not be able to participate in the induction programme. To speed up your induction, you can bring with you a copy of the confirmation or text message that was sent to you by the University upon completion of online registration. However, please do not worry if you do not have this with you as we will still be able to verify your registration status using other means. Wednesday 30 th September Friday 2 nd October 2015 The rest of the induction programme provides you with a chance to meet your personal tutor, a welcome talk from the Head of Department, as well an introduction to the David Wilson Library, the Economics Society, our Peer Mentoring Scheme, and the University s Career Development Service. You will learn more about your degree programme, the help and support available and the general facilities on offer at the University.
