Research in the Cardiff School of Health Sciences The Cardiff School of Health Sciences has a strong research culture; informing your curriculum and teaching and extending knowledge and evidence base for professional practice development. In the most recent UK wide Research Excellence Framework, (REF) 2014, 74% of our research was rated as internationally excellent or world leading. This contributed to the University s position as top new university in the UK for research quality. We have invested heavily in our research infrastructure with new research laboratories for biomedical science and food science and technology, a psychology research centre, health assessment suite and a post-graduate centre for our PhD students, who now number over 60 with strong research groups in Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Food Science & Technology and Psychology with a growing number of practitioner PhDs in Dietetics, Podiatry and Speech and Language Therapy. Our great strength is our multidisciplinary, collaborative approach and we produce world-class applied research that informs practice in Wales and beyond. For example, our work on exercise, diabetes, and healthy ageing includes collaborations between biomedical science, psychology and physiologists to better understand the complex relationships between lifestyle the ageing process and illness associated with ageing; extending our knowledge in this critically important area and influencing healthy ageing initiatives. Recent research grants awarded in this area include Welsh Government funded work on growing a healthy older population in Wales looking at the influence of gardening and allotment keeping on healthy aging and a large European funded study, Frailomics, examining biomarkers of frailty, an important indicator of health in the older population. Research across the School is extensive and varied. For more information on our research please visit and follow the link to research.

Working with Partners We are proud of our work with local communities, employers and industry in Wales and beyond. From developing homework clubs on science with black and minority ethnic communities in Cardiff to working with the pharmaceutical industry on drug discovery methods, we make a significant contribution to the social, cultural and economic well-being of Wales and the UK. We work in partnership with the Cardiff and Vale University Hospital Board to deliver key collaborative projects including running NHS Podiatry Clinics in our own Wales Centre for Podiatric Studies, improving patient care and clinical education for our students. The internationally recognized Food Industry Centre based in the School is supported by the Welsh Government to engage with Welsh food manufacturers to ensure they are competitive players in the food sector. To date this has led to the development of over 100 jobs in the industry and benefitted our students with opportunities for work placements, industry projects and innovative employment in the food industry. We work closely with industry on waste, pollution and occupational health and safety, and host one of the specialist chemical centres of Public Health England s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards and the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Public Health Management of Chemical Incidents. Staff from the School contribute to the work of a new Cardiff Met International Training Centre announced by the World Health Organisation in May 2011 in Thailand and officially launched here in April Our role in providing lifelong learning opportunities through Continuing Personal and Professional Development is important and we have excellent relationships with employers providing a host of CPD opportunities across the School s disciplines. We have strong links with local authorities and the third sector, providing post qualification training for Social Workers, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in health and social care and working closely with housing associations, including a recent Knowledge Transfer Partnership with a major local supportedhousing organisation. Our strong links with partners is key to our ability to provide you with relevant work experience placements critical to your professional development and employability.

BSc (Hons) Social Work Programme Introduction This information is intended to answer some of the frequently asked questions that students have prior to entry on the Programme. More detailed information will be supplied at induction including timetables. Frequently asked questions 1. Why a Programme rather than Course of study? All learning on the Programme, whether College or Agency based is learning for social work practice. The teaching, learning and assessment of your knowledge, skills, values and competence in applying these in practice are learnt, taught and assessed in both the College and practice context and both are equally valued and important aspects of the Programme. 2. What is the Programme Partnership? The management of the learning, teaching, and assessment, which occurs within the Programme, is essentially a Partnership between College and Agency Partners. 3. Who are the Programme Partners? The Programme partners are employers in the statutory and independent sector including Carer and User organisations and will be listed in detail in your Programme handbook which you will receive at the start of the Programme. Collaboration with agency partners is integral to the structure of the programme. The impact which this has on the delivery of the course through the Programme Management Committee and related inter-agency panels, such as the Practice Assessment Panel, will be discussed in the induction period. 4. What will I learn? Learning for Practice The Programme of study is based on the National All Wales Assessment Framework, which integrates: The National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Social Work; and the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Benchmarks for Social Work as a subject area of study. The Care Council for Wales Code of Practice is also central to learning and practice. 5. When will I learn what? What is the Programme of Study? There is modular teaching across two semesters of study each academic year. Modules are based on the six Key Roles identified in the National Occupational Standards: Focus of Academic Learning - Broad theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The Role & Context of Social Work Introduction to Assessment Communication & Empowerment Legislation and Social Work Practice Work in Organisations Introduction to Research Personal & Professional Development Becoming a Social worker

In the first year, or Level 4 of your studies, you will gain a basic understanding of these areas. This will be built upon in Level 5 where you will develop a greater depth of critical knowledge and understanding. At Level 6, a series of Evidence Based Practice modules are introduced to enable you to develop an even greater depth of knowledge and specialism within an area of interest related to practice. To support your learning you are also required to undertake practice learning in a social work setting context: Year 1/Level 4-20 days Year 2/Level 5-80 days Year 3/Level days These Practice Learning Opportunities (PLO s) will be co-ordinated by the Local Authority Agency with whom you will be linked for the duration of your studies. 6. What are the linking arrangements with Agencies? Students who are seconded will be hosted or linked with their employing Agency. Direct entry students, who apply through UCAS will also be identified a link Agency, i.e. a Local Authority Social Services Employer who will be responsible for the arrangement of your Practice teaching, learning and assessment for the duration of your Programme of Study. This does not necessarily mean that all of your practice learning opportunities will be within that Authority. Direct entry students will be asked prior to joining the Programme if there is any reason why they should not be hosted by any of the Local Authority Partners (Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly and Torfaen) in order to avoid potential conflict of interest. It is the responsibility of the student to make this known prior to engaging with the degree. Direct entrant students should also note that it is not always feasible to link a student with a Host agency in their home area and that subsequently there will be a requirement to travel from home to placement locations. 7. Do I need to be able to drive and own a car? Whilst it is not a requirement of the Programme to have the ability to drive and have use of a car it should be noted by students that there will be a requirement to travel whilst undertaking practice learning. Students should note that there may be an impact upon the extent of placement opportunities that can be offered if they do not have the ability to drive, or do not have access to a car. Where a car is used for the purpose of practice learning it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they have appropriate business insurance for the duration of the Programme and periods of practice learning. 8. How much time should I set aside for my studies? In the first year/level 4 of your studies you will attend College one day a week with an expectation that another full day each week is spent in directed or online study through the virtual learning environment Moodle. This is in addition to your own self-study and background reading and the 20 days in a practice setting. In Level 5 there will be 80 days in a practice setting and in Level 6 there will be 100 days in a practice setting. In effect, the Programme is an full time programme via part-time College attendance and you will therefore be expected to commit a substantial amount of time to your studies. 9. What are the anticipated days of College-Based study? The anticipated College days are provisional and will be confirmed nearer the time. Year 1/Level 4 Wednesdays + online directed study day Tuesday Year 2/Level 5 Tuesdays + online directed study day Monday Year 3/Level 6 Thursdays + online directed study day Friday 10. How will I learn? During your time on the Programme you will experience a number of teaching and learning strategies. These include case studies, lectures, seminars, small group projects and student-led presentations. Tutors and Practice-based assessors acknowledge that students bring life and work experience with them to the Programme, which offers an extra resource in self-directed learning. 11. How will I be assessed? Each module that you undertake is assessed. The nature of the assessment will vary according to its purpose, so this may include essays, academic posters, presentations, and an examination in the first and second years. All assessment events incorporate theory and practice and must demonstrate a commitment

to anti-oppressive practice and consideration of a Welsh context. 12. What if I have specific learning needs? If you have any additional or specific learning needs, we would advise that you make links with Student Support Services prior to commencing your studies on You may also consult with the Programme Director in relation to specific learning needs. There may also be issues which are more appropriately discussed with your Personal & Professional Development Tutor, who is usually the first point of reference for any issues which could affect your progression through the programme. Your Student profile, to be completed at the start of the programme, is also an opportunity to identify such issues and for further discussions with your tutor and Host agency. 13. What else might be expected of me? There is an expectation of commitment towards anti-oppressive practice, which should be reflected in both college and practice activities. The Programme Handbook has details of the Programme philosophy, along with policies relating to Equal Opportunities and Welsh language. In your own interest, and those of other students, you are expected to attend regularly and punctually, and with due regard to other people on the University property. Attendance: As a Professional degree Programme we have an expectation that students attend all taught sessions, undertake all directed study and maintain attendance on periods of practice learning. There is an expectation that you notify your Tutor and/or your Practice Assessor and Line Manager, when appropriate, of any absence from the Programme, who will inform the Personal tutor if this involves any concerns over completion of the Programme. This also relates to holidays, which must be negotiated with the Programme Director and/or seconding/hosting agencies. Further guidance relating to absence & attendance will be given at the start of the Programme and is contained in the Programme handbook. Enhanced DBS (formerly known as CRB) and Declaration of Health information: As you should already know, all students have to complete a health check and police check declaration form for criminal convictions. We ask you to reveal any criminal convictions, bind-over orders, cautions or warnings that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013). You should note that satisfactory completion and return of the self declaration forms is a condition of entry to the social work degree. If a conviction is indicated you will be invited to attend for a follow up interview in order to discuss this with Chris Martin, Selection tutor and a representative from one of our host agencies. The University reserves the right to take into account all information contained in the Enhanced DBS results in determining the suitability of an applicant and where something is disclosed on the Enhanced DBS form that has not been considered by the University previously, it may be taken into account when determining whether to allow a student to start or continue with a programme of study. There is also an expectation that students will keep the programme informed about any changes in their personal and professional situation, which may affect their progression through the programme. Information about the Programme s procedures in relation to suitability to practice and termination of training are in the Programme Handbook and come under the Programme Specific Policies and Regulations. 14. Welsh Language Opportunities are available for you to develop and use your knowledge of the Welsh language: Welsh language vocabulary sessions will be available throughout Levels 4 and 5 for students who are fluent and proficient learners and who wish to improve their knowledge of Welsh social work terminology. An increasing number of the programme modules on Blackboard, the Virtual Learning Environment, are bilingual and interested students are encouraged to use them.

Some lectures will be delivered bilingually to the whole cohort by means of simultaneous translation facilities. Please contact Welsh Language Co-ordinator Gwenda Roberts on for more details. 15. Black and Minority Ethnic Student Group The Black and Minority Ethnic Student group is for social work students who identify themselves as black and/or minority ethnicity. Although facilitated by staff, this group extends an invite out to all black and minority ethnic social work students who would like to attend. The group aims to build a network between students and practitioners and to bring a stronger black and minority ethnic voice to social work training and practice. The group is recognised and supported by the Programme Management Committee for the degree in Social Work, and members of the group sit on the Programme committees for each year. Although a small group, the Programme is keen to see the group grow. Please contact Black and Minority Ethnic Co-ordinator Marcelle Dos-Santos on mdossantos@cardiffmet.ac.uk for more details. 16.
