1 MATHEMATICS PROGRAM Plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement From the Mission of Hocking College Hocking College is an innovative, experience-based technical college that nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of Academic Affairs Unit Nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of Arts and Sciences Department To provide an innovative learning-centered environment in which experienced-based learning prepares students with the success skills and job-related skills needed for success in the workplace, in society and for transfer to four-year institutions. Mission of Mathematics Program To provide an innovative, experience-based education that prepares students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be successful in applications of mathematical concepts related to their technical careers or transfer to other institutions; and, to provide multiple ways for students to achieve mathematical success. Central Objective To provide the students with mathematical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in technical programs, to transfer to fouryear educational institutions, or entry-level employment. 2 Success Skills The following general outcomes are life and work skills cultivated in all students seeking the Associate Degree. 1. Communicates effectively. 2. Demonstrates math skills. 3. Demonstrates learning, critical thinking and problem solving skills. 4. Maintains professional skills and attitudes. 5. Practices human relations skills. 6. Demonstrates knowledge of science and the environment. 7. Demonstrates community, cultural, and global awareness. 8. Maintains a code of ethics. Program Outcomes The following outcomes express additional, particular skills, behaviors, and attitudes cultivated in students taking Mathematics courses. 1. Demonstrates knowledge and skills required by Hocking College Success Skill, "Demonstrates Math Skills." 2. Demonstrates mathematical knowledge and skills necessary for success in the students technology. 3. Demonstrates ability to succeed in mathematics at four-year institutions by those who are university bound. 4. Demonstrates the mathematical knowledge and skills necessary for success in entry-level positions. The Success Skills and Program Outcomes combine to form a single set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes determined desirable for entry-level practitioners, for graduates transferring to four-year institutions, and for educated citizens. 3 Criteria for Assessing Student Academic Achievement 1. On the Success Skills test for Demonstrates Math Skills, students who are enrolled in mathematics courses (Introduction to Algebra, Comprehensive College Algebra, Hospitality Math, and Elementary Education Math) and who take the test will score seventy percent or higher demonstrating above average to exceptional performance. Data gathered for : Summer 2008 Fall 2008 Winter 2009 Spring 2009 Year Number of Students Tested NA 378 Number of Scores 70% or higher NA 325 Percentage of Students scoring 70% or higher NA 88% Average Score NA 81.3% Analysis of data: This year, the goal was exceeded since 88% of the students (325 out of 378) scored 70% or higher on the test. The average score on the test was 81.3%. No data was available for spring Last year, the goal was exceeded since 82.5% of the students (518 out of 650) scored 70% or higher on the test. On the Success Skills test for Demonstrates Math Skills, students who are enrolled in mathematics courses (Introduction to Algebra, Comprehensive College Algebra, Hospitality Math, and Elementary Education Math) and who take the test will score 3.5 or higher (on a 5-point scale) on each skill evaluated demonstrating above average to exceptional performance. Data gathered : 1. Solves addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. Additionally, the individual aggregates for summer, fall, and winter exceeded the goal. Summer students were rated below goal on solving ratio, percentage, proportion, decimal, fraction, and conversion problems. Summer and winter students were below goal in expressing everyday relationships in mathematical terms. Additionally, the individual aggregates for summer, fall, and winter exceeded the goal. Summer, fall and spring students were rated below goal on solving basic geometric and algebraic problems. All quarters were below goal in expressing everyday relationships in mathematical terms. The aggregate score for the Success Skill Demonstrates Math Skills evaluated by graduates of Hocking College on a survey will be 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale) indicating the graduates satisfaction with their preparedness in math at Hocking College. Data gathered for : * Number of Responses 100 Success Skill** Aggregate Demonstrates Math Skills 3.90 * Source of information: Hocking College Graduate Surveys (November, 2008) ** For a complete listing of the Success Skills see page 2 of this report. Analysis of data: One hundred graduates from twenty-eight (28) programs of study evaluated the Success Skills on an electronic survey indicating satisfaction with their Hocking College preparation in life /job skills. The aggregate of 3.90 for Demonstrates Math Skills exceeded the goal of 3.0 or higher (on a four-point scale). In addition, all of the individual Success Skill aggregates were rated above goal. Future electronic surveys will be designed so that individual program data related to Success Skill evaluation can be obtained.. Those programs falling below the 70% goal included Broadcast Productions, Construction management, Educational Para Professional, Medical Records, Office Management, and Theatre.
