2 EASTERN INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING Are you interested in nursing but not sure where to go for your nursing education? Check out the Nursing Program at Eastern International College (EIC), conveniently located in Belleville, New Jersey. At EIC, our students have the privilege of learning from seasoned faculty that have trained nationally and internationally, and are experts in their field. Our class size is small which facilitates a student centered approach to learning. Our classrooms and laboratories are equipped with modern technology and supplies. THE NURSING PROGRAM AT EIC The nursing program can be completed in six semesters (2 years) if you progress through the program according to the program design. Each year comprises of three semesters. The semesters begin each January, May and September. Each semester will last for fifteen weeks. The first two semesters involve completion of the general education courses, nursing support courses and an introductory course to Nursing. In the third semester, students will be expected to attend clinical practicum in selected area hospitals as well as nursing skills laboratory practice in the nursing laboratory located at the Belleville Campus. The program is a full-time day program; however, classes and clinical placement may be anytime from 7am 11pm depending on availability of faculty and clinical sites as assigned by the clinical education site. Admission Requirements All prospective applicants must have the following documents prior to admission testing and interview: 1. Proof of Identification/Citizenship Submit proof of citizenship, permanent resident card, birth certificate, US passport, driver s license, social security card. 2. High School Diploma/G.E.D All applicants must provide evidence of receiving a high school diploma or GED as well as transcripts for courses taken in an institution of higher education. An official transcript of the applicant s high school record is mandatory and official transcripts from each college or university attended. Applicants must have achieved a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale for college work. Applicants whose secondary education was in a country outside the U.S. must obtain written official evaluation of transcripts showing equivalency from the country of the College attended through one of the approved Pre Admission Package Information Page 2
3 providers of such evaluation. These include WES, ECE, etc. Submit an official sealed copy of the applicant s high school diploma or college transcript directly to: Eastern International College 251 Washington Avenue, Belleville, NJ Recipients of a State Equivalency Diploma must submit an official transcript of their test results with the application. 3. Entrance Examination (Composite Score of 70% or higher) Applicants are required to take an entrance exam. The exam is used to assess student competencies and readiness for entry into the nursing program. The Admission Assessment Exam consists of several academic exams and a personality profile identifying the individual applicant's learning style. The exams consist of the following: Reading Comprehension - Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc. Vocabulary and General Knowledge - Contains vocabulary terms commonly used in both general English speaking and in the health care fields. Grammar - Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc. Basic Math Skills - Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc. Biology - Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc. Anatomy & Physiology - Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems. Learning Style - Assesses the preferred learning style of the prospective applicant and offers test-taking and study tips suited to your specific learning style. The entire examination must be taken in a single session; a 70 percent cumulative score is the preferred minimum requirement for admission. Higher percentile scores will be given preference in the admissions process. Pre Admission Package Information Page 3
4 4. Interview A personal interview with the Nursing Admissions Committee is required. 5. Health Clearance All applicants must present proof of physical examination, immunization records, and health insurance as required. The health clearance form needs to be completed by a physician or other qualified health care provider such as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. (Health clearance form will be given to students who are being considered for admission). Students who are considered for admission to the nursing program will be required to submit to Criminal Background Check (CBC), Health Clearance, Drug Screen and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Adults certification in connection with their clinical placement at health care organizations. All expenses for health clearance, CBC and CPR certifications are the responsibility of the students. Unfavorable report from the Criminal Background Check will disqualify students for clinical placement in which case the student will be unable to complete the program requirements. To complete the Criminal Background Check and upload immunization records, the student will need to visit and follow the instructions. EIC package code is EB 19. There is a fee for the service payable to the company. ADMISSION CRITERIA TRACT II Goal: The goal of a multiple track admission criteria is consistent with the mission of the College that provides academic preparation for students from diverse background. By creating another admission track, students who were not considered due to poor standardized test taking skills and those who are academically disadvantaged are provided the opportunity to learn those skills and demonstrate preparedness at no cost to them before entering the nursing program. Objectives: To increase the number of students admitted to the nursing program To improve attrition rate by at least 5% during the first semester of admission to the nursing program. To improve test taking abilities as evidenced by 5% increase on standardized examinations. Pre Admission Package Information Page 4
5 Admission Criteria: Students who are considered for admission into the nursing program through Track II must meet the following criteria: Proof of Identification/Citizenship High School Diploma or GED HESI composite score of on the HESI admission test College level English (ENG 101) and College Math with a passing grade of C or better Admission interview Medical Clearance, Drug test and Criminal Background Check Students who are selected based on the above criteria will be enrolled in non credit nursing seminar course NUR 100. If the student successfully completes NUR 100 with a C+ or better, the student will then be offered admission to the nursing program. NUR 100 course will be provided to the student at no cost. Attendance at all sections of the course is required to pass the course. Students who choose this option for admission must sign a disclosure indicating that enrollment in the above course do not constitute admission to the nursing program and that they agree to the conditions of this course offering. 6 Requirements for Acceptance into the AAS RN Nursing Program Applicants will be ra nked according to the following criteria and will be admitted on a space available basis. Total maximum score = 12 There is no waiting list. If an applicant is not admitted, they may re-apply in the next cycle. 7 TRANSFER POLICY All major nursing courses are not transferable. These are courses designated as NUR. Transfer credits will be awarded for general education courses completed from an accredited higher institution of learning approved by the US Department of Education based on the following criteria: i. Credits will be awarded upon review of transcript for course description and credit hours. ii. Student must earn a grade of C or better in a course for it to be transferred. iii. Maximum transferable credit will be no more than 21 credits. iv. Transfer credit for science courses (Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Microbiology) will be accepted if the course was taken no more than five years ago. v. Transfer credit for Anatomy and Physiology will be accepted: o If the course was taken no more than five years ago. o If the student passed the A&P section of the HESI A2 entrance examination with a score of 70 or higher A student with a score below 70 in A&P will be required to repeat A&P irrespective of the fact that the student took the class before. vi. Transfer credit for English Composition I & II will be accepted if, o The Student passed the English section of the HESI A2 entrance examination with a composite score of 70 or higher A student with a score below 70 in English will be required to repeat English Composition irrespective of the fact that the student took the class before. vii. Transfer credit for Mathematics will be accepted if, o The Student passed the Math section of the HESI A2 entrance examination with a composite score of 70 or higher A student with a score below 70 in Math will be required to repeat College Algebra irrespective of the fact that the student took the class before. Graduates of foreign schools who are seeking transfer credit must have a course-bycourse transcript evaluation done by accredited evaluators. 8 evaluators can be found on the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) website at The evaluation is done for a fee which the student needs to pay directly to the evaluation agency of their choice. It is also the responsibility of the student, NOT the college, to fulfill/send requirements needed by the evaluating agency.
