SCHEDULING POLICIES Parent(s)/Guardian(s) must review and approve their son/daughter s course selections. The counselors may make recommendations regarding the student s course selections based upon the student s past academic performance, test results, potential ability, and career aspirations. First semester course changes will be considered only if they meet one or more of the following criteria if requested after the start of the school year: * A student is missing a course required for graduation. * A student failed a course in the previous semester and that course is required for a course in which the student is currently enrolled. * A student passed a summer school course required for a higher level course. * A student is not enrolled in at least 7 credit courses. * A course has been added to, or dropped from, courses offered at time of registration. * Administrative need. Course changes will be allowed for students failing a first semester course if the instructor agrees it is in the student s best interest and space is available in another course. These requests will require administrative approval. If a student must be dropped from a class during the course of a semester for reasons other than the above, the student will be dropped with a grade of F for the semester. *** Parent/Guardian signatures are REQUIRED for us to process the student s registration and any changes after the semester begins. 5 PALMYRA-EAGLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD POLICY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ENROLLING IN HIGH SCHOOL COURSES It is important to meet the individual academic needs of every student enrolled in the Palmyra-Eagle Area School District. To accomplish this goal, it may be necessary and appropriate for some academically talented middle school students to enroll in high school courses. Therefore, it is the policy of the Palmyra-Eagle Area School District to allow these students to enroll in high school courses as provided in the procedure outlined below. 1. A parent or legal guardian, teacher, gifted and talented program coordinator, or school counselor may request that a middle school student be allowed to enroll in a high school course. 2. The request will be granted by the high school principal if enrollment in the high school course would be in the best academic interests of the student. a. There are no scheduling conflicts that would interfere with the student s ability to regularly attend the course at the high school. b. the course is taught at the high school level by a teacher with appropriate licensure for that course c. Upon completion of the high school course the middle school student will have the name of the course, the grade earned, the credits earned, and the year the course was completed recorded on his or her high school transcript. 3. Upon completion of the high school course, the grade earned by the middle school student will be calculated as part of the student s middle school grade point average (GPA) and recorded on the student s middle school report card. It will also be used in the computation of the student s high school grade point average (GPA). Upon completion of the high school course the credit earned by the middle school student will be considered as an additional credit and will be used to meet any specific course requirements or count toward the current number of credits required for graduation from Palmyra-Eagle High School. 4. Credits earned for high school courses taken while a student is enrolled in middle school will be used to determine eligibility for any high school honors, awards, scholarships, memberships, or other forms of recognition that is based on the total number of credits earned. 5. This policy was implemented beginning with the school year. ADOPTED: 10/10/2006 REVISED: 10/09/12 5

8 ADVANCED PLACEMENT WHAT IS ADVANCED PLACEMENT? The Advanced Placement program (AP) is a cooperative educational endeavor between high schools and colleges or universities. It allows students to enroll in college-level courses while in high school, and gives them the opportunity to show mastery by taking an AP exam. AP EXAM AP exams are given during the second and third weeks of May. Every student takes the same exam at the same time. Each exam consists of two sections. The first section is made up of multiple-choice questions. The other section consists of free-response questions in various formats: essays, audiotaped responses, analysis of historical documents, extended problem solving, etc. AP EXAM GRADES The AP exam grading scale is as follows: 5 extremely well qualified 2 possibly qualified 4 well qualified 1 no recommendation 3 qualified Students will receive their grade report in July. Most colleges and universities accept AP exam scores of 3 or above but it is the college/university s choice. BENEFITS OF AP Students will receive credit, advanced placement or both at most colleges and universities. The amount of credit received varies on the college, AP score, and the subject. Some colleges grant up to six college credits for a score of 5. Students are also able to move into a higher level class at college as a freshman. This not only translates into time saved, but also a financial savings for each credit earned while in high school. It is possible for a student to take enough AP exams to enter college at a sophomore standing. COST OF AP EXAMS Students do have to pay for each exam taken. The cost for the exam will be approximately $88 per exam which is due upon registration. There is a cancellation fee of approximately $14. AP EXAM TIMELINE January - receive letter from school listing AP exam eligibility if taken the PSAT in the Fall. 12 THE SIXTEEN CAREER CLUSTERS AND THEIR PATHWAYS How do I use this book? The Career Pathways Handbook incorporates the Career Clusters into high school course selection. These tools are ways for students to group their required courses and electives into a coherent sequence in preparation for post-secondary plans (college, career, etc.) Utilizing the 16 Career Clusters, students can identify pathways from high school to technical college, university, graduate school, and/or directly into the workplace. By connecting education to future goals, students are motivated to work harder and enroll in more rigorous courses. Communicating career and educational goals to your school counselor, working with the WISCareers website, and exploring the 16 Career Clusters at can aid students in choosing relevant and applied coursework designed to meet their individual educational and career goals. 1. Take the Career Clusters Interest Survey on pages 10 through 13 and review this booklet with your parents. 2. Consider your interest and aptitude test results (Career Cluster Interest Survey and WISCareers online assessment) to select the best Career Cluster & Pathway for you. 3. Review the appropriate Career Program of Study and postsecondary requirements for the Career Cluster/Pathway you have chosen. 4.
