1 MEDICAL ASSISTANT TECHNOLOGY Plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement From the Mission of Hocking College Hocking College is an innovative, experience-based technical college that nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of Academic Affairs Unit Nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of Medical Assistant Technology To prepare individuals for entry-level careers in ambulatory health care settings such as medical offices and clinics and to provide students with a background sufficient for growth and advancement in the medical assisting profession. Central Objective Graduates of the Medical Assistant Technology will be well prepared for entry-level employment. IP0910MedicalAsst/1
2 Success Skills The following general outcomes are life and work skills cultivated in all students seeking the Associate Degree. 1. Communicates effectively. 2. Demonstrates math skills. 3. Demonstrates learnin,critical thinking and problem solving skills. 4. Maintains professional skills and attitudes. 5. Practices human relations skills. 6. Demonstrates knowledge of science and the environment. 7. Demonstrates community, cultural, and global awareness. 8. Maintains a code of ethics. Program Outcomes The following outcomes express additional, particular skills, behaviors, and attitudes cultivated in students seeking the Associate Degree in the Medical Assistant technology. 1. Performa a wide range of clinical skills to promote care of patients and families effectively. 2. Conducts patient education to ensure continuity of care. 3. Directs office business by performing a variety of administrative duties. 4. Communicates effectively with staff, doctors, patients, community, and other medical personnel. 5. Maintains professional skills and attitudes with colleagues and patients. 6. Maintains, coordinates, and documents policies and procedures for office. The Success Skills and Program Outcomes combine to form a single set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes determined desirable for entry-level practitioners in Medical Assisting, for graduates transferring to four-year institutions, and for educated citizens. 3 Criteria for Assessing Student Academic Achievement 1. The aggregate score for each Program Outcome evaluated by graduates of the Medical Assistant program on a survey will be 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale), indicating the graduates satisfaction with their Hocking College preparation for entry-level work. Manages medical records. 5. Schedules appointments. 6. Manages practice finances. 7. Processes insurance claims. 8. Provides patient care. 9. Assists with procedures and treatments. 10. Collects and processes specimens. 11. Performs laboratory and diagnostic testing. 12. Utilizes computer software to maintain office systems. Last year, one hundred graduates from twenty-eight (28) programs of study evaluated the Success Skills on an electronic survey indicating satisfaction with their Hocking College preparation in life /job skills. The overall aggregate of 3.93 exceeded the goal of 3.5 or higher (on a five-point scale). In addition, all of the individual Success Skill aggregates were rated above goal.. 7 5. A survey will indicate that 80 percent of graduates desiring employment in the Medical Assisting profession will report employment in the field within one year of graduation. Data gathered for *: Total number of graduates: 20 Number of responses including surveys, phone calls, & faculty input: 17 Number of graduates employed related to technology: 10 Number of graduates employed unrelated to technology: 4 Number in military: 0 Number of graduates continuing education: 3 Number of graduates continuing education and employed: 0 Number of graduates seeking employment: 1 Number of graduates "Unknown" 2 * Source of information: Hocking College Graduate Survey For the graduating class of 2009, 50% of graduates desiring employment in the medical assisting profession obtained employment in the field within one year of graduation. This information is based upon the medical assistant faculty knowledge of graduates. Does this analysis support conclusions drawn from other assessment data analyzed for ? Please elaborate. The medical assisting employment market within a fifty mile radius of Hocking College is in a moderately depressed state. This contributed to the lower number of graduates obtaining employment as compared with previous years. Several graduates obtained employment through their externship experience. When medical assisting positions do become available in medical offices and clinics in the community, the Hocking College medical assisting graduates are typically given a preference status to fill these positions. 8 6. One hundred percent of students who graduate from the Medical Assistant Program will have obtained scores of 95 percent or higher on practicum clinical and administrative objectives. Data gathered for : Number of graduates: 13 Percentage aggregate 99 The form used to maintain an ongoing record of classroom and externship outcome assessment is very detailed and references more than 100 different skills. The instructor initials the form for the specific outcome when the student has performed the skill with competency in the classroom. The form is also initialed by the externship supervisor when the student has performed with competency at the externship facility. Students are placed at three different externship sites during the program. The number of documented skills is then converted to a percentage. Thus, this data collection is a continuous and on-going process. The forms used to document that the outcomes have been achieved are available upon request. One-hundred percent of students who graduated in 2009 obtained 95 percent on practicum clinical and administrative objectives. The average of this graduating class was 99%. The aggregate score for professionalism as evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors for students in the Medical Assistant technology will be 8.5 or higher (on a ten-point scale), indicating good to excellent performance. Data gathered for : Number of students evaluated: 13 Aggregate score for professionalism: 9.76 Student Progress Reports are on file for all students participating in externships for One-hundred percent of students who graduated in 2009 obtained 8.5 or higher on professionalism as evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors. The aggregate score for professionalisms for the 2010 graduates was 9.76 (on a 10-point scale). Program change planned for as a result of this analysis: The program will not be changed. 10 8. The aggregate score for professionalism obtained from student in-class guided self-evaluations will be 90 percent or higher, indicating very good to excellent performance. Data gathered for : Number of students evaluated: 30 Aggregate score for professionalism: 92% The Class Progress Records from all students enrolled in the program during were reviewed. The aggregate score for professionalisms obtained from in-class self-guide evaluations was 92%. Program change planned for as a result of this analysis: The program will not be changed. The aggregate percentage for the Success Skill, Demonstrates Math Skills evaluated in Medical Office Procedure III(MA 222) with the balance of a day sheet will be 85% or higher (on a 100% scale) indicating proficient to exemplary performance Data gathered for : Number of students evaluated: 28 Aggregate score for Day sheet: 100 The aggregate percentage for the Success Skill: Demonstrates Math Skills using the balance of a day sheet was 100%. The aggregate percentage for the Success Skill, Demonstrates Knowledge of Science and the Environment evaluated in Advanced Clinical Assisting Procedures (MA 200) with the identification of the ECG cycle will be 85% or higher (on a 100% scale) indicating proficient to exemplary performance Data gathered for : Number of students evaluated: 29 Aggregate score for ECG Waveform 90% Identification: Last year, identification of the ECG cycle was 90% indicating proficient performance for this success skill. 13 11. The aggregate score for graduate passage of the CMA (Certified Medical Assisting) exam as a direct external measure will be 80% or higher indicating very good to excellent performance.
