Mission of EMT-B/P Certificate Programs To prepare students for entry-level career positions as EMT-B s or Paramedics, and ultimately for middle management positions teaching specialty courses, and to provide CPR, First Aid, and ALS courses to other technologies at Hocking College. Program Outcomes To following outcomes express particular skills, behaviors, and attitudes cultivated in students seeking a Certificate in the EMT-Paramedic Technology. 1. Practices professional behaviors, including good attendance, promptness, and appropriate dress. 2. Works under the supervision of a certified State of Ohio paramedic instructor in an ethical, legal, safe and effective manner. 3. Documents all contacts with patients properly. 4. Uses effective written, oral, and nonverbal communications skills with patients, families, community, peers, and subordinates. 5. Examines the recertification process for both Ohio and the National Registry. 6. Passes the National Registry Exam. 7. Practices the EMT Professional Conduct Code and Code of Ethics. 8. Operates and maintains EMS equipment. 9. Practices personal fitness and maintains health needed to carry out vigorous job responsibilities. 10. Operates emergency vehicles in a safe manner. The Success Skills and Program Outcomes combine to form a single set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes determined desirable for entry-level practitioners in the Emergency Medical Technology (Basic and Paramedic). 3 Criteria for Assessing Student Academic Achievement 1. Eighty percent of students who successfully complete the course requirements for the EMT-B program will pass the National Registry Exam by the third attempt. Data gathered for July June 2008: Number of students sitting for the National Registry Exam for the first time 108 Number of students who passed the exam 72 Number of student who failed the exam 21 Percentage of students passing the exam on the first attempt 79% The overall pass rate for the EMT-Basic was 79%. The pass rate is below the National Registry s requirement by one percentage point. The implementation of Comm I and Basic Math has helped students in their goals, to pass the NR test. Students who did not pass the NR exam on the first attempt were eligible to enroll in the Test Prep EM 276 class, which helps develop test taking skill, and improving their ability to succeed on their next attempt. Program change planned for as a result of this analysis: The State of Ohio EMS Education Board has elected to increase the EMT-Basic course from 130 hours to 140. This additional class time will enable instructors to augment their classes and better prepare students for the NR examination. This Criterion will be changed to read as follows in our Plan: Eighty percent of students who successfully complete the requirements for the EMT-Basic Program will pass the National Registry Examination. 4 2. Eighty percent of students who successfully complete the course requirements for the EMT-P program will pass the National Registry Exam. Number of students sitting for the National Registry Exam for the first time 19 Number of students who passed the exam 12 Number of student who failed the exam 7 Percentage of students passing the exam on the first attempt 68% * represents first of three attempts The numbers above do not indicate several EMT-P students from the class who have not as of yet taken the National Registry Exam. The majority of the students above are from the class. The overall pass rate is below the NR required percentage, it is expected when all students test the percentage will increase. The pass rate for the last class was 48%, this year there is an increase of 20%. The implementation of the online portion of this class appears to have helped to improve the overall pass rate. The online segment of the EMT-P course will be augmented with a discussion board that will employ critical thinking discussions over current topics. Stand-alone lectures will schedule for classes that are of particular importance and of a more difficult nature, examples of these classes are Pharmacology, and Cardiology. The State of Ohio EMS Education Board has elected to increase the EMT-Basic course from 40 credit hours to 45 credit hours. This additional class time will enable instructors to augment their classes and better prepare students for the NR examination. 5 3. scores for EMT-B students who take the National Registry Exam for the first time will be 70 percent or higher in all subtests. *The National Registry is a pass fail exam and the figures below indicate the percentage of students who passed each section. These skills were evaluated by Hocking College EMS instructional staff. Last year, the overall aggregate of 5.0 exceeded the goal of 3.0 on a 5-point scale. Additionally, each of the individual skill aggregates was evaluated above goal (see IP 0607, page 7) No program changes are planned. Additionally, all of the individual aggregates were above goal. Last year, all of the individual skill aggregates were rated above goal by onsite hospital clinical supervisors.
