3 NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY Palmyra-Eagle Area School District is in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which states that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, or handicapping condition, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any program or activity for which the Palmyra-Eagle Area School District receives federal financial assistance. SCHEDULING POLICIES Parent(s)/Guardian(s) must review and approve their son/daughter s course selections. The counselors may make recommendations regarding the student s course selections based upon the student s past academic performance, test results, potential ability, and career aspirations. Once the schedule is processed, course changes will be considered only if they meet one or more of the following criteria: * A student is missing a course required for graduation. * A student failed a course in the spring semester and that course is required for a course in which the student is currently enrolled. * A student passed a summer school course required for a higher level course. * A student is not enrolled in at least 7 credit courses. * A course has been added to, or dropped from, courses offered at time of registration. * Administrative need. Second semester changes will be made prior to the start of second semester. Course changes will be allowed for students failing a first semester course if the instructor agrees it is in the student s best interest and space is available in another course. These requests will require administrative approval. If a student must be dropped from a class during the course of a semester for reasons other than the above, the student will be dropped with a grade of F for the semester. *** Parent/Guardian signatures are REQUIRED for us to process the student s registration. 5 ADVANCED PLACEMENT WHAT IS ADVANCED PLACEMENT? The Advanced Placement program (AP) is a cooperative educational endeavor between high schools and colleges or universities. It allows students to enroll in college-level courses while in high school, and gives them the opportunity to show mastery by taking an AP exam. AP EXAM AP exams are given during the second and third weeks of May. Every student takes the same exam at the same time. Each exam consists of two sections. The first section is made up of multiple-choice questions. The other section consists of free-response questions in various formats: essays, audiotaped responses, analysis of historical documents, extended problem solving, etc. AP EXAM GRADES The AP exam grading scale is as follows: 5 extremely well qualified 2 possibly qualified 4 well qualified 1 no recommendation 3 qualified Students will receive their grade report in July. Most colleges and universities accept AP exam scores of 3 or above but it is the college/university s choice. BENEFITS OF AP Students will receive credit, advanced placement or both at most colleges and universities. The amount of credit received varies on the college, AP score, and the subject. Some colleges grant up to six college credits for a score of 5. Students are also able to move into a higher level class at college as a freshman. This not only translates into time saved, but also a financial savings for each credit earned while in high school. It is possible for a student to take enough AP exams to enter college at a sophomore standing. COST OF AP EXAMS Students do have to pay for each exam taken. The cost for the exam will be approximately $88 per exam which is due upon registration. There is a cancellation fee of approximately $14. AP EXAM TIMELINE January - receive letter from school listing AP exam eligibility March - registration for AP exams and deposit due May - AP exams July - results of exams ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES OFFERED AT PALMYRA-EAGLE HIGH SCHOOL AP Biology AP U. 7 YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM The Wisconsin Youth Options Program is a program that allows 11 th and 12 th grade students to take courses at institutions of higher education. Tuition payment is the responsibility of the district if the courses taken are substantially different from courses we currently offer and if the course is taken for high school credit. Tuition payment is the responsibility of the pupil (parent/guardian) if the high school offers a comparable course or if the course is being taken for post-secondary credit only. To enroll, a student must have notified the School Board through an application form by March 1 or earlier to enroll in a fall semester course. The deadline for notification of a spring semester course is October 1 or earlier. Summer school is not eligible for this program. Acceptance into programs is the prerogative of the post-secondary institution, and students are admitted only if they meet the admissions standards of the school and if there is space available in the courses desired. TECHNICAL COLLEGE A public school pupil, with the written approval of his/her parent/guardian, may apply to attend a technical college for the purpose of taking one or more courses if he/she: 1. Has completed the 10 th grade; 2. Is in good academic standing and meets the requirements and prerequisites of the course for which he/she has applied; 3. Does not meet the statutory definition of a child-at-risk ; 4. Does not have a record of disciplinary problems; and 5. Meets the requirements and prerequisites of all courses applied for. See your guidance counselor for the number of credits allowed, for courses which are comparable or not comparable to courses offered at PEHS and for additional information. 2-YEAR COLLEGE / 4-YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY A public school pupil, with the written approval of his/her parent/guardian, may apply to attend a college/university for the purpose of taking one or more courses if he/she: 1. Has completed the 10 th grade; 2. Is in good academic standing and meets the requirements and prerequisites of the course for which he/she has applied; and 3. Meets the requirements and prerequisites of all courses applied for. TRANSPORTATION Responsibility lies with the parent/guardian, although parents who are unable to pay such costs may apply to the State Superintendent for reimbursement of the transportation costs. CREDITS One-quarter credit at the high school is given for each semester credit/ hour at the college/university level. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION If a student drops a Youth Options class or receives a failing grade in a Youth Options class, the student or the student s family must reimburse the school district for all tuition and fees for that class. 7

8 THE SIXTEEN CAREER CLUSTERS AND THEIR PATHWAYS How do I use this book? The Career Pathways Handbook incorporates the Career Clusters into high school course selection. These tools are ways for students to group their required courses and electives into a coherent sequence in preparation for post-secondary plans (college, career, etc.) Utilizing the 16 Career Clusters, students can identify pathways from high school to technical college, university, graduate school, and/or directly into the workplace. By connecting education to future goals, students are motivated to work harder and enroll in more rigorous courses. Communicating career and educational goals to your school counselor, working with the WISCareers website, and exploring the 16 Career Clusters at can aid students in choosing relevant and applied coursework designed to meet their individual educational and career goals. 1. Take the Career Clusters Interest Survey on pages 10 through 13 and review this booklet with your parents. 2. Consider your interest and aptitude test results (Career Cluster Interest Survey and WISCareers online assessment) to select the best Career Cluster & Pathway for you. 3. Review the appropriate Career Program of Study and postsecondary requirements for the Career Cluster/Pathway you have chosen. 4. Read the course descriptions for the courses recommended in your chosen Program of Study. 5. Complete your 4-year High School Plan located on page See a school counselor or teacher if you have questions. 8
