This will be achieved through a stimulating and challenging learning environment which aims to develop key knowledge and skills required to work in an international public health context. The specific aims of the programme are: 1. To provide participants with the knowledge and skills to raise awareness of the public health approach to health improvement from an international perspective. 2. To provide participants with the knowledge and skills that will strengthen their capacity and capability to engage in partnership work with and for communities to improve health and reduce inequalities in health. 3. To provide participants with a learning experience which will enhance their capacity and capability to develop new public health skills and knowledge as well as draw upon thier previous experience. 4. To enable students to develop a critical appreciation and understanding of public health systems and the values and evidence which underpin their development. 5. To provide clear career development opportunities for students aspiring to work in an international public health context. 6. To provide a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to thier own research or advanced scholarship. Target award Learning Outcomes - Master of Science A student successfully completing the programme of study will have acquired subject knowledge and understanding as well as skills and other attributes. Programmme structure - programme rules and modules Programmme rules The PG Diploma and PG Certificate International Public Health are both offered as alternative exit awards. The PG Diploma International Public Health is also offered as a target award. The route can be studied part or full time for home students. Students studying part time will be able to complete the MSc or PgDip programme in two calendar years. International students will be expected to study full time. Full time students will complete the MSc or PgDip programme in one calendar year. Home students can study up to PG Diploma level on a part time basis. The PG Diploma in International Public Health can be awarded for successful completion of 120 credits comprising the following core modules: 7016PHEALT, 7017PHEALT, 7018PHEALT, 7019PHEALT and 7032PHEALT. Plus an additional 30 credits from the option menu. Opportunities for work-related learning ( location and nature of activities) Students are encouraged wherever relevant to apply learning, this includes prior learning and practical experiences. Full time students are encouraged to take up voluntary of part time positions in the public health field. There is no formal work based element to the programme though students can use the Independent Study Module to write up a report based on a public health experience. Students have the opportunity to work alongside researchers in the Centre for Public Health to develop research skills and analysis within the Dissertation module. Students will be encouraged and supported in finding voluntary placements in local public health provision. Furthermore students will be advised and encouraged to develop career planning skills through the World of Work team. Criteria for admission Other Standard entry Applicants are normally required to possess a good honours degree (minimum grade 2.2) in a related or relevant discipline. Non-standard entry For applicants not in possession of a good honours degree, the programme leader will take into account relevant professional qualifications (e.g. Nursing Registration, Qualification in Social Work, Environmental Health qualification) and experience. Any participant who does not have a first degree must satisfy the programme team of their ability to study at Master's level through presentation of a strong portfolio to demonstrate appropriate equivalent skills in the work place. For these applicants, individual assessments of their suitability for post graduate level study will be arranged and conducted by the programme team. The team may require evidence to be submitted as part of the assessment process e.g. a portfolio of written and other work; papers presented at conferences, publications; reports and research proposals. Overseas qualifications Standard entry Applicants are normally required to possess a good honours degree (normally a minimum grade 2.2) in a related or relevant discipline. Students with relevant experience and a clear rationale for studying international public health will be accepted on to the programme. Additional requirement Evidence of English Language through achievement of minimum IELTs score of 6.5 (normally) or equivalent English Language Test External Quality Benchmarks All programmes leading to LJMU awards have been designed and approved in accordance with the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, including the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in the UK (FHEQ) and subject benchmark statements where applicable. The University is subject to periodic review of its quality and standards by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Published review reports are available on the QAA website at Programmes which are professionally accredited are reviewed by professional, statutory and regulatory bodies (PSRBs) and such programmes must meet the competencies/standards of those PSRBs. Support for students and their learning

5 The University aims to provide students with access to appropriate and timely information, support and guidance to ensure that they are able to benefit fully from their time at LJMU. All students are assigned a Personal Tutor to provide academic support and when necessary signpost students to the appropriate University support services. Students are able to access a range of professional services including: Advice on practical aspects of study and how to use these opportunities to support and enhance their personal and academic development. This includes support for placements and careers guidance from the World of Work Careers Service. Student Advice and Wellbeing Services provide students with advice, support and information, particularly in the areas of: student funding and financial matters, disability, advice and support to international students, study support, accommodation, health, wellbeing and counselling. Methods for evaluating and improving the quality and standards of teaching and learning Student Feedback and Evaluation The University use the results of student feedback from internal and external student surveys (such as the National Student Survey), module evaluation questionnaires and meetings with student representatives to improve the quality of programmes. Staff development The quality of teaching is assured through staff review and staff development in learning, teaching and assessment. Internal Review All programmes are reviewed annually and periodically, informed by a range of data and feedback, to ensure quality and standards of programmes and to make improvements to programmes. External Examining External examiners are appointed to programmes to assess whether: the University is maintaining the threshold academic standards set for awards in accordance with the FHEQ and applicable subject benchmark statements the assessment process measures student achievement rigorously and fairly against the intended outcomes of the programme(s) and is conducted in line with University policies and regulations the academic standards are comparable with those in other UK higher education institutions of which external examiners have experience the achievement of students are comparable with those in other UK higher education institutions of which the external examiners have experience and to provide informative comment and recommendations on: good practice and innovation relating to learning, teaching and assessment observed by external examiners opportunities to enhance the quality of the learning opportunities provided to students Please note: This specification provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if he/she takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided.
