4 Consultancy The department s members have many years practical experience of consultancy, encompassing a wide range of industrial, commercial and public sector organisations. The consultancy approach can range from training needs analysis, the development of tailor-made courses and events, through to project support and project advice by tapping into expertise provided by the University. Specific examples include statistical support and process development seminars with the National Health Service, through to low carbon/high skills courses for the advanced engineering sector. Expertise within the department is enhanced by the research and teaching activities undertaken for traditional academic activities, with focus directed onto specific individual and organisational needs. Consultancy provides the department with the opportunity to offer academic learning, quality and standards to organisations, whilst working with them to improve knowledge and skills further by developing capability both within the organisation and within the consultancy programme. Continuing Professional Development Short Courses A range of short courses, at all levels are available from EDM. These range from short e-learning programmes to five day taught modules. Many short courses also come with assessment, enabling you to embed your learning after the course, once back in your daily environment. If you successfully attempt these assessments, you will gain academic credit, which can be used in award programmes, should you choose this option. Undergraduate Part-Time Study There are a number of undergraduate awards you could choose to take, ranging from an assessed short course through to a full Master of Engineering degree. These are offered both full time and part time, with the latter allowing you to remain in employment as you study. Professional Part-Time Postgraduate Study Taught Masters level modules are available as short courses or part of an award. These are usually over 5 consecutive days and, if you choose to aim for credits, are assessed by assignments relating to the skills and knowledge learnt. Modules can be short, e-learning topics, through to large work-based learning modules. The former can be undertaken in your own time, whilst the latter are arranged with you and your employer, to consider in detail a specific project in your workplace. You choose the type of learning you want and we support you in this process. You gain a postgraduate qualification and your employer gains new skills, competencies and an employee who can implement and critically reflect on the project in hand. The above award structure is designed to help you choose your level of learning and to allow you to achieve it in academically approved staged steps, for example, from PG Certificate, stepping though to the PG Diploma, onto the MSc. Distance Learning Distance Learning material has been produced to support self-learning and to support access to undergraduate degrees, particularly in engineering and mathematics, for those who have not been in education for some time and who might feel their understanding of mathematics and statistics is a bit rusty. A range of web-based learning materials are available to students, that complement and support the topics covered in the courses offered. The course delivery is managed via a dedicated module web site. Accredited Learning Learning that has already been completed, either through formal teaching programmes or as experiential learning in the workplace, can be considered as part of further learning programmes within the department. Courses and projects that are approved as accredited prior or experiential learning can count towards academic awards.

5 Work-based Learning/Shell Award Framework In all the above cases, you can gather modules and aim for a generic Shell award. The Shell Award Framework enables you to gain an academic award for your continuing professional development. All awards have the title Integrated Professional Development and may carry a descriptor in recognition of the focus of your studies. The Framework allows you to negotiate a programme of study that supports your individual learning requirements and professional pathways. You need: A compulsory UWE Work-Based Learning Project Module You choose the rest of your study programme, eg: - UWE taught modules - Modules from other providers (subject to availability) - UWE-facilitated work-based learning. Doctoral Studies and Research The department offers the opportunity for suitable candidates to study for both PhDs and professional doctorates, such as an Engineering Doctorate (EngD). Complementary to a PhD, a professional doctorate is made up of two components, a taught programme and a research activity. If you study for this award, you will be expected to be working in your business environment on a project of direct relevance to your sponsoring organisation. 6 Individual Development Professional Accreditation and Recognition Many of the short courses and awards on offer through EDM can lead to professional recognition. Undergraduate courses are accredited through their relevant Professional Institutions and all courses can be treated as CPD learning. Postgraduate awards are also closely linked to relevant Institutions. Various levels of professional recognition can be supported by the learning offered through EDM. For example: Incorporated Engineer Chartered Engineer Registered Professionals The department has close links to a number of Professional Institutions and further information can be found in the details of each award programme.

7 Industry Focused Initiatives Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) One of the UK s leading business support programmes, helping organisations to improve their competitiveness and productivity through accessing knowledge, technology and skills that reside within Universities. 8 Placements and Employability The department has a successful track record of combining academic excellence with periods of practical, work-based experience. By combining principles and theory with practice, our students are better able to assess the value of their course and apply the knowledge they have gained. Normally commenced after completing the second year of the undergraduate degree, the work placement is a period of up to one year doing work of relevance to the degree. Students gain invaluable transferable skills during their placement. Employer benefits Placements provide you with an enthusiastic and intelligent member of staff without affecting your permanent head count. Students are a fresh pair of eyes who can be used to investigate issues and explore opportunities in a cost effective way, supported by their Academic Placement Tutor and Company Supervisor. Offering placements to university students raises your company s profile and image amongst the student population, making it easier to recruit graduates. Experience shows that many of our students are recruited back to their placement companies after they have graduated, and others go on to very successful careers elsewhere. The work placement is available to students from most undergraduate degrees within the department.
