Criteria for admission to the programme Applications are welcomed from graduates of BSc (Hons) Complementary Health Sciences (Ayurveda). BSc graduates must leave no longer than 3 years before applying for entry to the MSc, or 5 years if they are practising regularly as an Ayurvedic therapist. Qualified medical professionals holding a degree from a recognised university (or the equivalent) would enrol for the three Ayurvedic Specific Modules from the Undergraduate programme, successful completion of which would entitle them to apply for the PG Diploma/MSc in Ayurvedic Medicine. Those with a recognised degree-level qualification in Ayurveda from other institutions could also apply to the PG Diploma/MSc Ayurvedic Medicine programme. Such students may need to make up clinical hours and any other modules not covered in their own degree programmes, in order to bring them in line with Middlesex graduates. Applicants may be invited for interview to assess their suitability for the profession, whether or not they meet the admission criteria. Applications from candidates with disability are welcomed. Such applicants will be assessed for their suitability to undertake the programme of study. 10. Aims of the programme The PG Diploma programme aims: to provide students with an advanced knowledge and skills to enable them to practice professionally and independently as practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine and to equip them to play a leading role within the Ayurvedic profession. to develop students critical, analytical and reflective capacities within a wider range of Ayurvedic modalities. to reinforce the students responsibility for their own personal and professional growth, through a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD). The MSc in Ayurvedic Medicine programme aims: to further develop students critical and analytical powers in relation research into Ayurvedic medicine. to produce research-oriented graduates who will contribute to the body of evidence-based Ayurvedic knowledge.

2 11. Programme outcomes - the programme offers opportunities for students to achieve and demonstrate the following learning outcomes. A. Knowledge and understanding On completion of this programme the successful PG Dip student will have knowledge and understanding of: 1. Demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of Ayurvedic medicine. 2. Critically evaluating current developments, including legal and ethical issues in the practice of Ayurvedic medicine. 3. Demonstrating an understanding of personal and professional development needs. In addition, the MSc student will be able to: 4. Demonstrate a sound understanding of scientific research and clinical audit in Ayurvedic medicine. B. Cognitive (thinking) skills On completion of this programme the successful PGDip student will be able to: 1. Discriminately apply the skills needed for Ayurvedic practice. 2. Utilise problem-solving skills in practice. 3. Synthesise information from a number of sources in order to give a coherent understanding of theory and practice. 4. Critically evaluate research and a variety of types of information and evidence. 5. Critically analyse, evaluate and interpret the evidence underpinning Ayurvedic practice. In addition, the MSc student will be able to: 6. Propose new approaches to Ayurvedic research and practice based on a critical evaluation of classical texts and current literature C. Clinical skills On completion of the programme the successful PGDip student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate skill, competence and safety in Ayurvedic practice. 2. Communicate effectively with individuals, relatives, carers, and other healthcare professionals, establishing professional and ethical relationships. 3. Make sound clinical judgements based on the verbal and physical presentations of an Teaching/learning methods Students gain knowledge and understanding through attendance at lectures, seminars, workshops and through a variety of directed and self-directed learning activities. Assessment Students knowledge and understanding is assessed by coursework, unseen exam, clinical assessment, report writing, reflective practice and dissertation. Assessment Assessed by clinical assessment, laboratory simulations, examination of clinical skills, report writing, case presentations and reflection. 12. Programme structures and requirements, levels, modules, credits and awards Overall structure of the programme The Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) is studied over 9 months full-time or 2-year part-time (although this is dependent upon completing the overseas placement of 12 weeks). Whereas, the MSc is studied over 1 calendar year full-time or 3 years part-time (dependent upon completion of the 12 week overseas placement). Study is undertaken at level 4 and supervised clinical practise is an integral part of the programme. The course is divided into study units called modules, having a credit value of 30 or 60 credits and there are two 30 credit modules and two 60 credit modules altogether making a total of 180 credits that need to be achieved for the final award of MSc; or one 60 credit module and two 30 credit modules for the interim award of PGDip. An innovative feature of this programme is the achievement of 600 hours of clinical practise (12 week placement) which enables successful graduates to attain full membership of the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association. Clinical practice will be undertaken at various specified Ayurveda Centres in India and/or Sri Lanka. Teaching will take place on weekdays during the full academic year of 2 terms and a summer, a total of 36 teaching weeks. In order to be awarded the MSc students need to attain 180 credits including the 60-credit dissertation. A student can exit with a PGDip on attainment of 120 credit points, excluding the dissertation Levels and modules. This section contains a more detailed description level-by-level of the programme structure, modules, credits and awards, there would be row for each level of an award. Note that all modules will be determined to be compulsory, designated or optional with regard to any programmes, or major/minor subjects, of which they are a part. Compulsory and designated modules can be regarded as the core modules of a programme or subject major/minor. Level 4 COMPULSORY - Students must take all of the following modules: PG Diploma in Ayurvedic Medicine: CMH4301 Ayurvedic Internal Medicine CMH4306 Introduction to Ayurvedic Specialist Medicine. IPL4001 Social Research Methods MSc Ayurvedic Medicine IPL 4095 Dissertation. PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS In order to graduate from the programme students are required to have successfully completed all modules at Grade 16 or above. Students also need to have met the attendance requirement for both theory and clinical practice outlines in the University guide and Regulations, as well as the Programme Handbook.

4 12.3 Non-compensatable modules. Modules may additionally be designated noncompensatable. Module level Module code 4 All level 4 modules on the programme are non0compensatable. 13. Information about assessment regulations Assessment regulations for the programme follow Middlesex University s Academic Regulations and the School s Assessment Policy. In addition, assessment regulations for the Programme are set out as follows: Where there is more than one component to a module assessment, students are required to achieve a Grade 16 or above, in each component of module assessment, in order to pass the module. Self deferral is NOT permitted. In order to progress through the Programme, students must meet the attendance requirements of the Programme as indicated in the programme handbook. 15. Placement opportunities, requirements and support Students on the programme complete a total of 600 hours of clinical internship in India / Sri Lanka linked to Ayurvedic medical practice. Supervised clinical internship is completed at various approved Ayurvedic Centres in India and/or Sri Lanka and is carried out during semester 1 of the programme. 16. Future careers: how achieving the qualification will support future career Development This programme prepares students for practice in Ayurvedic medicine, and is designed to meet the requirements of the Ayurvedic Medical Association. Successful graduates may take up a range of work opportunities related to Ayurvedic medicine, which is a rapidly expanding area. These include practice in a small business, independently or with other complementary medicine practitioners, or in conjunction with other organisations including charitable and commercial organisations. In addition students may join commercial, retail, manufacturing, research, teaching and horticultural concerns related to herbal medicine. Graduates will also be able to actively participate in research activities. 17. Other information The programme has been designed in collaboration with the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association and successful students may join their New Members Scheme. Middlesex University will change the way it describes the levels of its modules and programmes. The University will adopt the widely used Framework for Higher Educations Qualifications (FHEQ) levels, as defined in the table below.
