Intrductn In the past 100 years, nly 4 lverwrt speces had been reprted frm the Turksh, pennsular part f Thrace: Cncephalum cncum and Marcantha plymrpha (Frtsch 1900), Scapana cmpacta (Hendersn 1958), and Frullana dlatata (Walther 1967). Al had been cllected arund stanbul, each frm a sngle lcalty. Ths paucty f data has prmpted us t undertake a new nvestgatn f the area. Materal and methds The specmens were cllected n dfferent parts f Turksh Thrace (prvnces f stanbul, Klrklarel, and Tekrdag), durng the years 1992 and 1993, when a survey f lcaltes wth eclgcal cndtns sutabe fr the grwth f lverwrts was undertaken. Fr determnatn, the publcatns f Amell (1979), Watsn (1981), and Gòkler & Oztrk (1991) were used. The specmens are depsted n the herbarum f the Btany Department, Faculty f Scence, f the Aegean Unversty n Bmva-zmr (EGE). The study area and ts c1mate Turksh Thrace Ies n the Eurpean part f Turkey, cverng an area f 23,485 km 2,.e. abut 3 % f the tta area f the cuntry. It ncudes the prvnces f Edme, Klrk Iarel and Tekrdag as a whle as well as 12 csttuences f the stanbu prvnce and 2 csttuences f the çanakkale prvnce (Fg. I).

The mean annual ranfall f 7 statns averages 621 mm (Edme: 609 mm; Lleburgaz: 588 mm; çrlu: 577 mm; Tekrdag: 575 mm; Flrya: 635 mm; Kumkay: 682 mm; Galpl: 682 mm). The abslute mnmum temperature s C and C n lcaltes f the nterr (Edme and Lleburgaz, respectvely) but rases tward the cast (çrlu: C; Tekrdag: C; Flrya: C; Kumkay: -9.8 C). The number f wnter mnths wth frst s 2 n Edme and Lleburgaz, 1 n çrlu, and nl n the ther statns. The summer drught perd starts n July n Edme and Lleburgaz where t lasts untl the frst week f Octber; t lasts 3 mnths n Kumkay, 3.5 n çrlu, 4 n Flrya and Tekrdag, and 4.5 n Galpl. Results The lverwrt specmens cllected belng t 12 speces, 4 thalld and 8 leafy. Eght f them had nt been cllected befre n ths regn: they are hghlghted wth an astersk (*). The speces are enumerated n the sequence f Grlle's (1983) system. Cncephalum cncum (L.) Dumrt.
