4 Manuscript Preparatin Length Empirical article <4,000 wrds excluding title page, abstract & references Review <4,000 wrds excluding title page, abstract & references Meta analysis <4,000 wrds excluding title page, abstract & references Case histry <3,000 wrds excluding title page, abstract & references Structure Title Page The Title Page shuld cntain the fllwing: Title; This shuld be cncise, infrmative and avid specialist language. The title shuld nt exceed 75 characters. Abbreviatins shuld nt be used. The title shuld be understandable by anyne wrking in the field f health and safety. In preparing a title, authrs shuld remember that titles are used in infrmatinretrieval systems. Authr name(s) and affiliatins; List the first name, middle initial where apprpriate and family name f each authr. The affiliatin f each authr shuld be listed separately belw the list f authrs names and indicated by a superscript number. Prvide the full pstal address f each affiliatin, including the cuntry name, and, if available, the address f each authr. The address at which the authr actually did the wrk shuld be that prvided. Crrespnding authr; Clearly indicate wh will handle crrespndence at all stages f refereeing and publicatin, als pst-publicatin. Ensure that telephne and fax numbers are prvided in additin t the address and the cmplete pstal address. Declaratins; All authrs shuld disclse any actual r ptential cnflict f interest including any financial, persnal r ther relatinships with ther peple r rganisatins that culd inapprpriately influence, r be perceived t influence, the wrk being reprted. This shuld be prvided n the title page. In submitting an article the authr is implicitly declaring that the wrk: 4

5 Has nt previusly been published; Is nt under cnsideratin fr publicatin elsewhere; Is apprved fr publicatin by all authrs; Cntains wrk that is either riginal r acknwledged as that f thers thrugh references. Is free fr publicatin with the apprval f any funding bdies. It is the respnsibility f the authr(s) t ensure that any materials presented fr publicatin are free f cpyright and that plagiarism has been avided. Abstract An abstract shuld be prvided n a separate page fllwing the title page. The article title shuld be reprduced abve the Abstract. The abstract page shuld nt cntain the names r ther details f authrs. The abstract shuld briefly state the purpse f the research, the principal results and majr cnclusins. The abstract shuld nt exceed 250 wrds. The abstract shuld nt cntain references r abbreviatins. If abbreviatins are necessary, they shuld be defined when first used. The abstract is used in bibligraphic and indexing services and therefre shuld be able t stand alne. Keywrds Immediately fllwing the abstract a maximum f 6 keywrds shuld be prvided. Thughtful cnsideratin shuld be given t the use f keywrds that will be used by indexing services as well as ther researchers in cuntries that may use terms that are different t thse used in Australia. 5

6 Bdy f Text The Bdy f Text shuld begin n a page fllwing the abstract page i.e. page 3, and use the structure utlined belw. Manuscripts will nrmally be divided int sectins under apprpriate headings. Original Research, Meta-analyses & Case histries shuld cmprise: Intrductin; this shuld prvide sufficient backgrund t the reader t understand the cntext f the wrk and the need fr the research that is being reprted. The intrductin shuld state the aims and bjectives f the wrk. The intrductin is likely t prvide a summary review f the literature that is pertinent t the wrk being reprted. Methds; This shuld prvide sufficient detail t enable replicatin f the wrk. If the apprval f a research ethics cmmittee was necessary fr the wrk t be undertaken, this shuld be acknwledged and the name f the institutinal cmmittee cited. Results; A clear and cncise reprt f the findings f the wrk. Discussin; This sectin shuld be analytical and reflective. It shuld cnsider the implicatins f the results and make reference t the existing knwledge base where apprpriate. It shuld nt repeat the results. A cmbined Results and Discussin sectin is acceptable where this ffers greater clarity and/r brevity. Cnclusin; This sectin is brief statement f the findings and implicatins and suggestins fr further wrk. A theretical paper is likely t use headings that will guide the reader thrugh the paper. Hwever, it will include: Intrductin; this shuld prvide sufficient backgrund t the reader t understand the cntext f the paper and the need fr examinatin f the thery. The intrductin shuld state the aims and bjectives f the paper. Bdy f text using apprpriate headings; This shuld prvide a discussin f the thery with reference t the extant literature. Cnclusin; This sectin is a brief statement f the findings and implicatins and suggestins fr further wrk. Appendices shuld nly be used where it is abslutely necessary. 6

7 Tables & Figures Figures and tables shuld serve t supplement nt duplicate the text. Tables and figures shuld nt be psitined in the text. Instead indicate the apprximate psitin at which they are t be inserted and prvide the tables and figures at the end f the dcument r as a separate dcument. Clur plates will nt be reprduced. Black and white plates may be included after discussin with and at the discretin f the Editr. Tables and figures shuld be numbered cnsecutively in accrdance with their appearance in the text. Readers shuld be referred t tables and figures. A cncise and infrmative captin shuld be prvided with each. The crrect alignment f data within table clumns will depend n the type f data cntained in the table and the specific requirements f the subject area. Generally, all whle figures shuld be right-aligned, and all decimals shuld be aligned t the decimal pint. Please avid using the space bar t align data within tables. Use tabs r paragraph alignment instead. Ftntes Ftntes shuld be used sparingly. Acknwledgements Authrs shuld, where apprpriate, acknwledge surces f funding fr the wrk reprted. Acknwledgements shuld be prvided under an Acknwledgements heading at the end f the text, befre the bibligraphy. Style Avid using dt pints. These d nt wrk well in the jurnal frmat. Structure the pints int prse. Use gender neutral language. 7

8 Citing the wrk f thers T simplify the referencing f wrk yu may chse t use cmmercial reference management sftware such as EndNte, Refwrks, PrCite r similar. There is als pen surce reference management sftware available. Jurnal f Health & Safety Research & Practice uses the authr-date system (APA) fr citatins and the reference list. This system identifies the surce briefly (authr surname and publicatin date) at the relevant pint in the text. Where there are several references t ne wrk within a paragraph, it is nt necessary t repeat the year f publicatin. Citatins fr different wrks within the same parentheses shuld be listed alphabetically and separated by a semi-cln. Health and safety legislative requirements are detailed in the Occupatinal Health and Safety Regulatins (Victria, 2007). Research shws that small businesses have greater difficulty meeting Health and Safety requirements than d larger businesses (Jnes, 1997; Lamm, 1999). In her review f the literature relating t small businesses Lamm (1999) fund Where a paper being cited has mre than three authrs, the first authr shuld be cited and fllwed by et al and all authrs listed in the bibligraphy. These brief text citatins act as pinters t the full bibligraphical details given in an alphabetically arranged list f references at the end f the bdy f text. Nte that every entry in the List f References must have appeared as a cited surce in the text and, cnversely, all in-text citatins must be included in the reference list. 10 Submissin Manuscripts shuld be saved in MS Wrd frmat befre submissin. Text shuld be presented in single-clumn frmat with duble spacing between lines. The autmatic hyphenatin functin shuld nt be used. Authrs shuld use plain English and set wrd prcessr spelling checker t English (Australian). Language shuld be gender neutral where pssible. Authrs shuld utilise the spelling-check and grammar-check functins f their wrd prcessr befre submissin f their manuscript. Manuscripts shuld be submitted as an attachment t an addressed t [email protected]. Review An initial manuscript review will be undertaken within 10 wrking days f receipt and the authr ntified accrdingly. If accepted fr peer-review, this will be cmpleted within 10 weeks f receipt and the authr ntified accrdingly. Upn acceptance f a manuscript fr publicatin, the crrespnding authr will be asked t sign a release and assign the cpyright fr the article in published frm t the Safety Institute f Australia. Appeal If an authr disagrees with the utcme f the review prcess, they may invke the Jurnal f Health & Safety Research & Practice appeals prcess. This is dcumented as a SIA plicy dcument. 10
