1 INTRODUCTION While finishing my pre-university secondary education at the Rembrandt Atheneum school, mid seventies, I had to decide which university and faculty to select. Because of my matriculation program it had to be a university of technology. Architecture or chemistry was an option, but not at heart. Industrial design was also mentioned, although nobody could give me the exact definition of what it was. I decided to do a vocational test. It ended up with the advise to go into food preparation (it probably related to chemistry) or town planning (because of good spatial insight). When I asked the adviser if industrial design was a good option too, she hesitated, not knowing what it exactly was. When she returned to get some more information on industrial design, she presented me a brochure of Braun products. It has something to do with creating these kind of products, she said. From that moment on I knew what to become. In 1981 I graduated as Master of Science in Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. From I was partner of Concepts designers and head of the industrial design department. At the industrial design office of Landmark, which I co-founded in 1987 and joined for 10 years, I was director/design manager until 1993 and managing director until 1997, responsible for a company of employees. At the moment my job title is president of a compact office for design and design research, responsible for the total output of the company, working for clients in multi-disciplinary project teams as well as embedded in corporate project teams. In my profession as industrial designer I combine the role of managing projects (design management, project management) with the actual design work and design research for the application of (new) product technologies. Through the ability to apply knowledge across projects and fields of interest with functional and disciplinary skills, I emphasize to be a so called T-shaped professional. In the creation of new products and the application of new product enabling technologies, I focus on design to express the technological changes products go through. All my products and projects have a clear vision of the future in mind seen from the perspective of the application of technologies ánd the added value and effectiveness of design.
