2 Why TU Delft? TU Delft is a state university which conducts cutting-edge research and provides first-class education. We have excellent ties with industry and the creation of numerous technology-based (and often ex-student owned) companies in close proximity to the university. TU Delft places a strong emphasis on encouraging and stimulating students to become creative and independent thinkers so that they will later become engineers capable of solving complex problems independently. In order to foster this attitude, much of the academic curriculum revolves around analysis and project-group problem solving along with writing reports and papers. BSc programmes All Bachelor s degree programmes take three years to complete. The first year is mainly an introduction to the subject area and comprises a mix of lectures, tutorials and laboratory courses. You will often work together with other students on projects. In the second year, you will study your subject in greater depth, building on and using the knowledge you acquired in the first year. In the third year of the Bachelor s programme you take a six-month minor, which gives you the opportunity to explore a subject in even greater depth or to learn something new outside your degree subject. The choice of the minor is therefore entirely up to you. You could, for example, choose a teacher-training minor, study abroad or make a thorough study of a particular theme. It is a great opportunity to look beyond your own degree programme. You will conclude your Bachelor s programme with a final project. Sometimes you will work on the project in a group, and sometimes you will have to work alone. When you have completed your final project, you will be awarded the title Bachelor of Science. The academic year is divided into four ten-week periods. This means that you will have examinations four times each year. The degree programmes begin in September and end in July. Binding recommendation on continuation of studies If you have obtained fewer than 45 ECTS credits (of the total of 60 available) by the end of the first year of study, you will be issued with what is known as a negative binding recommendation on continuation of studies. This means that you will have to wait four years before enrolling for the same study programme at TU Delft. Student life Sports & Culture As well as studying, it s important to relax and explore your talents. Sports & Culture at TU Delft offers a wide range of sports and creative courses at an affordable student price. At the beginning of each year, during the Free Try-Outs, you can find out which courses best suit you. Furthermore, with a broad range of activities held each month, such as the free Friday nights with a band and DJ or films, workshops and the annual A day of Wonder, there s always something to do! More info: City of Delft Delft is a safe, interesting and historic town located between the larger cities of The Hague and Rotterdam. In Delft you will find many things that will help you to enjoy student life, including numerous cafés and pubs, two cinemas and a theatre. There are also many reasonably-priced restaurants. International cuisine in Delft ranges from Chinese, Indonesian and Mexican to Lebanese. You don t speak Dutch? Don t worry, most of the Dutch speak English. Student societies Each BSc programme at TU Delft has its own study association which protects the interests of its particular students. The study associations also organise many study-related events, such as conferences, company visits, and excursions in The Netherlands and abroad. 3 Proficiency in English Most Bachelor s programmes are taught in Dutch (except for Aerospace Engineering, Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering (conditionally) and Applied Earth Sciences which are fully taught in English). However most of the books and teaching materials are in English. You therefore need to show proof of English proficiency: The required minimum scores are: TOEFL 70 (internet based) IELTS 5.5 (Academic version, Overall Band Score) Cambridge (University of Cambridge, First Certificate in English ) - Grade B Our campus Our campus offers you the two things most important for a successful education: adequate study facilities and room to relax. TU Delft has computer labs, group-study spaces, coffee corners, faculty bars, sports facilities, culture, and much more. Our campus is easily accessible by public transport and only a 5 minute bike ride away from the historic city centre of Delft. Please note that different required minimum scores apply for the Bachelor s programmes in Aerospace Engineering, Applied Earth Sciences and Nanobiology: TOEFL ibt 90 (internet based) or IELTS 6.5 (Academic version, Overall Band Score) or Cambridge (University Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). The following applicants are exempted from the English test requirement: Nationals from the USA, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Applicants with a secondary school diploma (preuniversity certificate), considered equivalent to the Dutch pre-university education (according to the Treaty of Lisbon) with English as a final examination subject. Please note that for the Bachelor programme in Aerospace Engineering, Nanobiology, and Applied Earth Sciences a pass for English is required on your secondary school certificate. Admission requirements A Dutch pre-university (VWO) diploma qualifies for admission to the Dutch Bachelor s programmes of TU Delft. If you do not have a Dutch pre-university diploma (VWO), you need to have a secondary school diploma which is considered to be equivalent to this. In all cases you also need to have passed at least the final examinations in mathematics, physics (except for Applied Mathematics) and English. Please note: some Bachelor s programmes require additional final examinations. More information: More information: Proficiency in Dutch A good command of the Dutch language is required for the Bachelor programmes (except for the Aerospace Engineering, Applied Earth Sciences, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering programmes (conditionally), which are taught in English). If you are not proficient in the Dutch language, you are required to take the language course offered by TU Delft s Centre for Languages and Academic Skills. You can start this course in August or September (in the year before the start of your Bachelor of Science programme). Please bear in mind that it will take about a year to get your command of the Dutch language to the required level. Students from Germany and Scandinavian countries can take an 8-week summer course to learn Dutch. If you already have some knowledge of the Dutch language you will be asked to take a placement test. London 1 hour by plane Delft Amsterdam 40 min. by train Note: In order to start the Dutch language course or to take a placement test you will need to have been provisionally admitted to a Bachelor of a Science programme by the Central International Office of Delft University of Technology. 5 BSc programmes The TU Delft offers four Bachelor s degree programmes that are taught entirely in English, and twelve Bachelor s programmes taught in Dutch. The English-taught programmes are Aerospace Engineering, Applied Earth Sciences, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. All Master s programmes (of which there are more than 40) are taught in English. Taught in English Aerospace Engineering Testing aerodynamics in wind tunnels, calculating satellite orbits, testing materials in laboratories, designing a revolutionary helicopter; you will learn about all the disciplines of aviation, space travel and Earth observation. Applied Earth Sciences A small-scale degree programme that focuses on big subjects such as the raw-materials cycle, energy supply, technology and geology. Taught in Dutch Applied Mathematics You will learn to make models that describe reality as accurately as possible. This may apply to the worlds of finance or medicine, or to logistics or manufacturing processes. Applied Physics How does the world around us work? How can physical phenomena be explained and applied? This is the challenge presented in the Applied Physics degree programme. Architecture and the Built Environment Established in 1904, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment is one of the largest architecture faculties in Europe, and a leading design academy. Students in our Bachelor s programme are educated to become architectural engineers and learn about sustainability, climate and the balance between design and technology. Civil Engineering From flood protection to designing large structures, and infrastructure for road, rail and waterways. Clinical Technology This multidisciplinary programme, which focuses on the interface between medicine and technology, is a unique collaborative partnership between TU Delft, Leiden University, and Erasmus University Rotterdam. Computer Science In this degree programme you will design and develop software for applications ranging from games to cars, from navigation systems to medical diagnostics. Electrical Engineering Electrical engineers design and develop electronics and energy systems for computers, robots and electric cars, as well as sustainable energy sources such as solar cells and wind turbines. Industrial Design Engineering Integrate technology, ergonomics, aesthetics and business administration to design usercentred products and systems. Life Science & Technology This degree programme focuses on the living cell. The programme is offered jointly by TU Delft and Leiden University. Marine Technology Drilling platforms, shipping companies, navigation routes, oil and gas transport, offshore installations, pipe and cable layers, heavy transport and, of course, shipbuilding; all these belong to the field of Marine Technology. Mechanical Engineering Mechanical engineers think up and design all the things that make life easier and more pleasant - for businesses as well as consumers. Molecular Science & Technology This chemistry programme is offered jointly by TU Delft and Leiden University. Nanobiology This degree programme brings together nano-physics and biology. It is offered jointly by TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam. The course is mainly taught in English. Per September 2017 we expect the programme to be fully taught in English. Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management Large-scale technological systems require the expertise of a broad range of disciplines. In this programme you will learn how to bridge the gaps between civil engineers, legal specialists, mechanical engineers, economists, IT specialists, policy analysts and all the others involved in these enormous projects.
