Graduate program Life Sciences and Engineering Technological innovations have become an essential part of modern healthcare and patient care. Therefore, both in industry and in healthcare, there is an increasing need for people who can deal with today s increasingly complex biomedical problems. This is why the TU/e offers the graduate program Life Sciences and Engineering. An important part of this program is offered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The biomedical engineer specializes in solving technical problems that require an understanding of human functioning so he/she needs not only engineering skills and knowledge but also a comprehensive medical and biological understanding. Research is focused on three themes: Molecular Bioengineering & Molecular Imaging, Biomechanics & Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Imaging & Modeling. The most important aim of the research is to design and develop solutions for clinical problems in the field of prevention, diagnosis and treatment in healthcare. Within the Life Sciences and Engineering graduate program, the following programs are available: Master s degree programs Biomedical Engineering Medical Engineering PDEng programs Healthcare Systems Design School of Medical Physics and Engineering (Qualified Medical Engineer and Clinical Informatics) PhD programs Life Sciences and Engineering MASTER S DEGREE PROGRAMS Biomedical Engineering The master s degree program Biomedical Engineering (BME) aims to train engineers who are able to organize and carry out both fundamental and applied research in the field of biomedical engineering. This multidisciplinary program is based on integrating engineering and life sciences. You can specialize in a number of different disciplines, e.g. cell mechanics, molecular imaging techniques and molecular simulations. The program is research-driven and design-oriented. Although most of the courses have a biomedical and technical orientation, and provide a basis for the specializations in the master s degree program, it is also possible to choose courses that approach biomedical problems from a different angle, for example from an economic, ethical or a healthscience perspective. Graduation options Three tracks are possible. The Molecular Bioengineering & Molecular Imaging track approaches issues at the molecular level, using knowledge of e.g. organic chemistry, biochemistry and biomedical NMR. The Biomechanics & Tissue Engineering track applies the basic principles of mechanics and biology to biomedical problems and devices. Finally, the Biomedical Imaging & Modeling track applies methods from mathematics, computer science, physics, electrical engineering and medicine for image analysis, modeling and interpretation of biological systems. It is also possible to carry out research at the interface of two of these tracks., part-time (by arrangement) Language: English Times of entry: Every month Medical Engineering In the master s degree program Medical Engineering you will follow the rapid developments in the field of (bio)medical technology, and you will learn to translate these to the needs of clinical practice. As a future medical engineer you will also gain insight into the healthcare system. You will gain knowledge
I M HEALING SKIN WITH LIGHT ZANDRA FELIX GARZA Master s degree student, Biomedical Engineering For my thesis, I m working on an exciting new product for an international consumer electronics company. I m researching a method for treating skin disease using light. TU/e has strong ties with the industry in the region, which offers graduates great job opportunities. Besides my studies, I have an extremely active personal life: I m involved in all kinds of organizations and play several sports. The Netherlands is very different from my own country, so moving here was a big change for me. But now that I ve gotten used to the Dutch language, culture and food, I really enjoy living and studying in the Netherlands. in quantifying patient measurements, and you will use the results as input for (mathematical) models. Additionally you will learn to use models for patientspecific solutions. This information will help doctors to make better treatment choices and improve their diagnostic abilities. In addition, you will learn to carry out self-reliant clinical research. Once you start your career, you will ultimately be able to act as a fullyfledged member of treatment teams, working together with medical specialists, with your own specific tasks and responsibilities. Graduation options Depending on your own interests, you can choose from a range of specializations. In many cases you will select the topics that best match your own preferences together with your graduation mentor from one of the divisions Molecular Bioengineering & Molecular Imaging, Biomechanics & Tissue Engineering or Biomedical Imaging & Modeling. For example, you could specialize in radiology, surgery, radiotherapy, cardiology or neurophysiology. Language: English and Dutch (during internship and clinical modules) Times of entry: At the start of each semester SPECIAL MASTER S DEGREE TRACKS Regenerative Medicine and Technology Regenerative Medicine and Technology is formally a track within the master s degree program Biomedical Engineering and is a cooperation between Eindhoven University of Technology and Utrecht University. This special master s degree track aims to educate the next generation of scientists and engineers in this rapidly emerging, multidisciplinary field with significant
impact on current and future healthcare. It combines the expertise of both universities, and includes courses on molecular cell biology, biomaterials, imaging technologies, computational modeling, bioreactor technology and translational research. The program will comprise a mixture of courses, researchdriven internships, an (international) externship and an in-depth research project. Students will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories at both universities. Language: English Times of entry: At the start of each semester Care and Cure Health care is using a growing amount of technological applications and, in particular, electrical engineering applications. Think of large and complex hospital equipment like MRI scanners, or of small gadgets and tools that enable people to continue living in their own home environments for longer, such as a wireless alarm system. In between these two extremes are countless applications, for example pacemakers, monitors of all sorts of biological signals, diagnostic equipment and resources used in the curative process. The development of these applications is the subject of the Care and Cure master s degree track. The track integrates knowledge from the fields of electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science, physics and biology. Language: English Times of entry: September ADDITIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH TRACK Complex Molecular Systems The Complex Molecular Systems program is an additional 30 EC interdisciplinary program provided by the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) for selected master s and PhD students, aiming at a career in research. Graduate students from Biomedical Engineering are eligible for this program. The focus is on topics related to functional molecular systems and bio-inspired engineering, using state-of-the-art modeling and experimental techniques. Applications are in the area of sustainability, energy efficiency, soft biomaterials, tissue engineering and functional materials. A strong disciplinary foundation is complemented with the ability and knowledge to work in interdisciplinary research teams. PDEng PROGRAMS Healthcare Systems Design (track within ICT) Following your master s graduation, you can continue the track Healthcare Systems Design of the PDEng program Information and Communication Technology (ICT). High-tech industry needs experienced technological designers able to design complex new products and processes. A master s degree may well give you theoretical knowledge but you still lack sufficient practical experience. A PDEng program gives you that practical experience, which boosts your market value for industry. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. In the Healthcare Systems Design track the trainees acquire a thorough knowledge of the techniques and processes for prototype design and acquire structural know-how of the healthcare and wellbeing field and related technologies. This is combined with a strong personal and professional development course and training of entrepreneurial and networking skills. 70% of the track consists of in-company design assignments, which are typically done part-time over two years. During the track the trainees build up competences in the areas of prototype design flow, quality and reliability, cost awareness, applied physiology, medical ethics and get an overview of medical equipment and processes in hospitals and home-healthcare. They will obtain lectures on technologies for wellbeing applications, regulatory aspects of healthcare prototype development and choose a number of technical and medical electives. A summer school and regular visits to clinics, careproviders and companies will lead to a strong network for the trainees and will prepare them for their future career.
BART SANDERS PhD After my bachelor s degree in Biomedical Engineering, I was interested in the biological aspects of the program and the hospital sector. Because Eindhoven University of Technology had a very strong Biomedical Engineering department with very close collaboration with academic hospitals, I chose to do my master s degree in Eindhoven. At the moment I am doing a PhD in heart-valve tissue engineering to treat future babies that are born with congenital heart-valve failure. I am optimizing the tissue engineered heart-valve functionality and studying the immunological response of the host body. Within this research I am working with national and international universities and hospitals. I believe that, as an engineer, you cannot find a better place to work than Eindhoven. Because of the Brainport region there are many opportunities for collaboration with businesses. - Study possibilities: Full-time, In-company (HSD) - Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering - Language: English - Start program: September and January - Duration: 2 years (120 ECTS) - Clinical Informatics Clinical Informatics (CI), is focused on IT solutions in healthcare. The Clinical Informatician is responsible for the robust and safe introduction of Information Systems in the medical field. In-depth knowledge of IT, processes in health care and excellent communication skills are essential for the execution of the projects. Courses, intervision and training are provided to build the professional. The CI program trains engineers to become professionals within the medical field and leads to the PDEng degree. A CI trainee is on the payroll of the healthcare institution, generally a hospital, and partly at the TU Eindhoven. Qualified Medical Engineering The PDEng program, Qualified Medical Engineer (QME), has been established to support the fast and safe introduction of new technologies in the medical field. The QME operates like an engineer would in an industrial environment: he/she ensures that inventions from others are introduced in a robust way in daily practice. In addition to engineering skills, medical knowledge and especially communication with the healthcare professionals are crucial in this process. The curricula for Clinical Informatics and Qualified Medical Engineering are based on a long-standing experience since 1990 in hospital-based and university managed training of medical physicists. Both programs are geared towards supporting other healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, etc.) with engineering skills. The programs are carried out together with hospitals all over the Netherlands, from the largest academic institutions to the smaller regional hospitals. During the program the trainee is employed by a hospital, which ensures that the trainee is fully embedded in the daily practice of a clinical environment. Degree: Professional Doctorate in Engineering Language: Dutch (since this is the language in hospitals) Times of entry: Any time of the year, based on available positions in hospitals, see the published vacancies. Duration: 2 years The PDEng programs are coordinated in the 3TU.School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid-2006.
PhD PROGRAMS A master s degree or PDEng degree enables you to apply for a PhD position within the graduate program Life Sciences and Engineering.
