2 San Joaquin Delta Community College 2016 Scholarship Awards Ceremony 1 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Financial support through our Scholarship Program is one of the many ways that San Joaquin Delta College strives to help our students fulfill their dreams of achieving a college education and a better life. This year, we are able to award 342 scholarships that total over $208,000. Many individuals have worked very hard to build this successful scholarship fund. College Trustees and Delta Foundation Board members, administrators, faculty, and staff have joined with community organizations and individuals to provide the financial resources to fund the scholarships that support our students as they work to achieve their goals. The College staff and our student recipients are exceedingly grateful for the generous support of our community partners and individual donors, many of whom have been scholarship donors and supporters for more than twenty-five years. Dr. Kathy Hart Superintendent/President A huge thank you goes out to Tina Lent, Director of Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Veteran Services, and Cheryl De La Cruz, Scholarship Specialist, who oversee the Scholarship selection process, today s annual Scholarship Program event, and the reception following the Scholarship presentations. A special thank you to all of the College employees who participated in this year s scholarship review and selection process. Most importantly, the College and Foundation Board are exceedingly grateful to our faithful donors and to those who are contributing for the first time. We know the student recipients are thankful for your generosity and support. A special thanks to the Bank of Stockton and the Delta College Foundation for providing the refreshments for today s reception. While we are very proud of all of our students, we hold a special place of honor for our scholarship recipients. Congratulations to all of you for your hard work, your perseverance, your dedication, and for the success that you have achieved. You have shown, sometimes despite many obstacles that you can achieve your goals and dreams-you have grit, a quality exhibited by nearly all successful people regardless of their background. You richly deserve our recognition of your accomplishments as well as the financial support that the scholarships provide. Continue these high expectations for yourselves, and there s nothing you can t do. Remember the words of the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout for ways to nurture your dream. Good luck to all of you from the entire Delta College family. We sincerely wish you continued success in the future, and we know that your dreams will come true! Dr. Kathy Hart Superintendent/President of San Joaquin Delta College

25 INFORMATION ON THE USE OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AWARDED THROUGH SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE Scholarships are generally awarded to recipients near the end of the summer semester and the funds are held until proof of enrollment is verified at the beginning of the fall semester. In most cases, scholarship funds for awards made by San Joaquin Delta College are deposited in trust funds which show the name of the donor as well as the recipient. San Joaquin Delta College also receives funds awarded by other institutions. These are placed in a similar fund. San Joaquin Delta College has two obligations: to the donor, to be sure that the money is used according to the wishes of the individual or organization providing the money; and to the recipient, to provide the money when proper documentation shows that the student is entitled to these funds. Donors expect that scholarship funds will be used for registration fees or tuition, books, housing, or other costs related to education. Some donors require that you be enrolled full-time in order to use the funds, either at this or any other institution, unless donor specifies differently. If you are unable to utilize your scholarship award during the fall semester, we may be able to grant you a leave of absence for one semester from your award. However, failure to utilize your scholarship award without an approved leave of absence for the fall semester will cause cancellation of your award(s). All scholarship awards must be used for the school year for which the student applied for and cannot be extended or transferred to future school years. If you will be attending San Joaquin Delta College, the funds are usually available at the beginning of each semester to cover attendance at this college. Upon completion of necessary paperwork, funds will be disbursed within ten working days. It is San Joaquin Delta College s policy to disburse one half of the total scholarship award each semester, unless the donor notifies us otherwise. If you are transferring to another institution, please submit to our office, a copy of your acceptance letter indicating that you are registered at that institution. The funds will be transferred to the Financial Aid office and can be used in a manner similar to our policy. If you have any questions, please contact the office of Financial Aid, Scholarships and Veterans Services at (209) , Ext 6131.
