3 3 ELEMENTARY COMPUTER GRADE 5 COURSE SYLLABUS Grade Level: Instructor(s): Diane Kaufmann, Lisa Stewart, & Jennifer Beck Time Frame: 18 weeks 18 class sessions which meet once a week Textbook(s)/Materials: Computers, printers, Internet resources, computer software, digital cameras, digital video cameras, projector, scanners, etc. Course Rationale: This course builds upon the basic computer skills that were learned in the 4th grade computer class and applies advanced uses in technology. This course provides a strong foundation for the district s K - 12 technology curriculum. Units of Instruction: Keyboarding Awareness 3-4 classes Word Processing/Desktop Publishing 3 4 classes Multimedia, Internet and Graphic Arts 8-10 classes Assessment Procedures: Teacher observation, student checklists, accuracy of completed projects Grading Procedures: Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory Specific departmental information: Elementary computer is a part of the Business, Technology and Finance Department, which offers a comprehensive K 12 technology education program at the Franklin Regional School District.

5 5 FRANKLIN REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Instructional Planning Organizer Course: Elementary Computer Grade: 5 Unit of Instruction: Keyboarding Awareness Instructional Time Allocation: 3-4 class periods State Standard Statement of Content Standard Number Demonstrate keyboarding skills and techniques at expectable speed and accuracy. Process Indicator Students will be able to: Student will be able to demonstrate proper posture and hand placement on the home row keys. Suggested activities to engage student in learning process Students will progress through age appropriate keyboarding software. The software will be used to introduce, model and reinforce proper keyboarding technique. Suggested assessment to verify mastery of standard Proper finger placement and posture will be monitored and adjusted by the teacher through observation Demonstrate keyboarding skills and techniques at expectable speed and accuracy. Student will expand keyboarding skill by progressing through speed and accuracy drills. Students will progress through keyboarding software, which will introduce both the home row and correct reaches from the home row of keys. The teacher will monitor proper finger placement and keyboarding accuracy through observation.
