1 SMART Boards What is a SMART Board? The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that converts a computer and date projector into a powerful tool for teaching and learning. With the computer image projected on the SMART Board, you can control your computer from the Board. Because the touch sensitive board acts as the computer monitor you can control any application displayed on the board with your finger as the mouse. Orienting the SMART Board: While it may not be necessary to orient the SMART Board in your classroom, it is important to know both how to do it and why it is needed. Orienting the SMART Board allows you to orient the board s grid with your projection. It ensures that your touch is registered accurately and reflected in the correct spot on the board. When will I need to Orient the SMART Board? During initial setup - Orientation is needed before you can use the interactive whiteboard to control applications. If the projector or interactive whiteboard is moved - Orientation is needed each time the projector or interactive whiteboard changes location. If the cursor doesn t appear where you re pressing - Orientation is needed if your cursor appears somewhere other than where you re pressing on the interactive whiteboard. If the board is connected to a different computer - Orientation is needed whenever you connect it to a new or different computer. How do I Orient the SMART Board? Step 1 - Press and hold the on-screen keyboard and the right click buttons located on your pen tray simultaneously until the orientation screen appears. Step 2 Place your finger on the board and drag to the yellow target and release. The orientation point does not register until your finger is released. Step 3 Repeat Step 2 for all target points on the screen. Touch, Write and Save: Touch Technology When using the SMART Board it is important to remember that your finger is your mouse. You can control any application that runs on your computer on the interactive whiteboard. (Ex: open internet explorer and browse, open any Microsoft Office application, etc.)
2 Writing on the SMART Board You can utilize any of the pens from the pen tray or continue to use your finger to write on the interactive whiteboard. The digital ink color that is displayed on the board is reflected by the sensor that is illuminated in the pen tray not from the pen itself. The board will remember the last item that was selected from the pen tray and reflect that color on the board. Erasing on the SMART Board To erase digital ink from the interactive whiteboard you can use the eraser located in the pen tray. Use the eraser the same way as if you were erasing from a chalk board. To increase the size of the eraser, select the eraser icon from your Notebook software tools located at the top of the screen. This will give you 3 options for small, medium or large eraser sizes. Alternatively, to erase a large area of digital ink without scrubbing simply draw a circle around the area that you wish to erase with your eraser and tap the middle of the circle that you ve drawn. All digital ink should then disappear. Using Ink Aware Ink Aware allows you to write in your own handwriting while using a specific application in Microsoft Office. When you open a Microsoft Office document you will notice the Smart Ink Aware toolbar that appears in the left hand corner of your document. The tool bar has three options. Option 1: Allows you to save any notes or drawings that you ve made to your document as an image in digital ink. Option 2: Allows you to save any notes that you ve made to your document as text. Remember The text will appear at the cursor point and in the same color as you ve chosen. Option 3: Allows you to save a screen capture of your notes directly in your Notebook software.
3 SMART Notebook Software: Using the Notebook software tools with the SMART board interactive whiteboard allows you to create interactive, engaging lessons for your class. The floating toolbar will allow you quick and easy access to Notebook Software tools while utilizing any computer application. Follow the steps below to import any Microsoft Office documents to Notebook software documents. File ^Import ^ Open and browse to the document needed ^ Select document to import ^ Document will open in Notebook Software ^ Save your new Notebook file. Creating a New Notebook File You can create a new SMART Notebook file directly in the software not importing form a different application. Creating a presentation in Notebook is very similar to creating a presentation in Power Point. Notebook Software, however gives you several options to choose from in the Gallery tab side bar such as customizing a theme for your Notebook file or adding interactive and multimedia elements to your presentation.
