A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello FNSA Members! My name is Shelby Jones and this upcoming year I have the honor of serving each and every one of you as President. I m a second year nursing student at South Florida Community College and will graduate in June 2011 and continue on to work on my BSN in August I m excited about the work we already have planned for this year and we have a great Board of Directors who are as excited as I am about our time together. Our 2010 Convention was a great success; a special thank you goes out to Lori Wagner, our convention chair who spent all year coordinating convention. Such a great success would not have been possible without all of the time the rest of the Executive Board put in and all of the host schools that helped Lori s vision come into play. Another group that often goes unnoticed and deserves a big thank you is all of the delegates that served in the House of Delegates, without your presence we would not have been able to have our business meetings. Many of you sacrificed focus session opportunities and I thank each and every one of you for your dedication. Hopefully the 2011 Convention will be an even bigger event with more attendance and school participation, start planning and fundraising now. I d like to personally congratulate Mrs. Lynda Schaak from Polk State College who received the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award. This is a very distinguished honor for her selfless service and her tremendous time commitment. Chapter of the Year went to South Florida Community College who broke s three-year streak, congratulations Panther Nurses! Check out the enclosed list for a full listing of all awards presented at this year s 2010 Convention. Our first board meeting will be December 11, 2010 at 11:00 and will be held at FNA headquarters in Orlando. Remember everyone is not only invited, but encouraged, to attend these meetings to make sure you re kept up to speed on board decisions and to ensure your voice is heard. You should be receiving contact from your Region Director after every meeting updating you with new business and providing delivery of Hotline. We will also need committee members to take part in each of our committees; you can your Region Director or me with the committee you d like to be involved with. Make sure you check the FNSA website frequently for updated information and any resources you may find useful. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or your Region Director with any questions, comments or concerns. We re here for each and every one of you! See you all in December! Shelby Jones FNSA President Page 2

1 ST VICE PRESIDENT/BYLAWS CHAIR Guess who! It s me again Dudley L. Deshommes and I am your new FNSA 1 st Vice President and Bylaws Chair. I would like to extend great appreciation to the former Executive Board Members, who I will miss dearly, for their hard work with the annual FNSA convention and service to FNSA. Especially, Grandma Dudley, if you attended the House of Delegates or the opening night party then you know whom I am referring to. I had a blast at convention and look forward to next year s convention. As your former treasurer, we raised over $1200 in donations during the convention. These funds were applied toward scholarships that were awarded at the banquet on Saturday, October 30, Over $ of that fund was raised during the House of Delegates where I verified my commitment to the organization and challenged the delegates to help me raise $ Of course they exceeded my expectations. Perhaps it had something to do with what I was wearing. I would like to thank all the schools that participated in Penny Wars. We raised $ The winning school PICTURE UNAVAILABLE was Barry University with 5181 points, 2 nd place: Santa Fe College with 2835 points, and 3 rd place: South West Palm Beach with 2506 points. Barry University will be awarded with half the money collected. Thank you again for participating. I am sure your fellow nursing scholarship recipients thank you as well. I would also like to thank University of Tampa and South Florida Community College for their help with the Penny War table. As your new 1 st Vice President and Bylaws Chair, I hope the experience that I have gained as a former executive board member will help sustain the organization in its commitment to the community and fellow nursing students. I want nothing but the best for FNSA and I am certain that my dedication to the organization is a testament to what I have to offer. I already have some Bylaws that I believe need to be changed to match the diverse avenues our members have obtained. I will make sure to communicate any changes with regards to Bylaws with all constituents in the state. Above all I will be ready and prepared to take on the Office of the President if such appointment was to ever arise. Please feel free to share any ideas or concerns with me at FNSA_1stVP@yahoo.com. I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported me and I look forward to working with all of you this year. Dudley Deshommes, RN UCF-Orlando RN-BSN Page 3

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY Hello nursing students! My name is Tailikia Chamberlain and I am the Corresponding Secretary. I am honored and humbled that many delegates at the FNSA Convention believed that I could serve the students of Florida at such a great capacity. Special thanks to my faculty advisors Professor Dara Whalen, Sharon Rafalko & Dr. Ferrona Beason, my chapter president Victoria Evans and those who traveled the journey with me you know who you are. I could not have done it without your continuous support and dedication to my campaign. Tailikia Chamberlain I see many great things happening this year but my main focus is getting students more involved in the Hotline, which is produced 14 days after board meetings. It is very important that student voices be heard and the Hotline is a way of making sure that this happens. In addition, the Hotline s success is contingent upon your participation and the issues you see fit for students to address. Please feel free to send me poems related to nursing, articles you find valuable, issues that are left unaddressed and anything else that you d like other students to see. And there may just be prizes for those who participate. Please be proactive. Represent your region. Represent our profession. TREASURER My name is Mariana Ortigosa and I am the FNSA Treasurer. I am very excited to be a part of this executive board!!! I hope to bring my talents and experience to the FNSA for a great year. 6 Who Has The Most Region Spirit? Represent Your Region Let Your Region Be Heard! REGION 1 DIRECTOR/Membership Chair Hi my name is Tami and I am a native of Jacksonville, Florida, who graduated from Bishop Kenny High School. I was the editor of the year book and captain of the crew team. I enjoy rowing, swimming, theatre, and spending my free time with friends at the beach and at the movies. I began my college experience in Tallahassee at Florida State University, and then returned to Jacksonville to attend the University of North Florida and pursue a nursing degree. I am currently the recording secretary of the University of North Florida s Student Nurses Association and an active member in the chapter s charity events. As a member of the Executive Board, I am looking forward to representing the schools in Region One and I aim to foster communication and participation in the region. To date, my most exciting nursing experience has been the opportunity to see an open heart surgery and witness the human heart in ventricular fibrillation. I hope to see many more exciting events in the future and I am honored to represent the schools in Region One. Tami Williams FNSA_region1@yaho o.com REGION 2 DIRECTOR/Communications Chair Murielle Joseph FNSA_region2@yahoo.com Hello there, fellow FNSA members! My name is Murielle Joseph, and I am so elated to be serving you as Region 2 Director and Communications Chair. I graduated in May 2010 with my first baccalaureate in Spanish and am currently an Accelerated BSN student at the University of Florida where I will be graduating December Both NSNA and FNSA are new to me, but I am excited to be a part of this community of rising nurses. This year s FNSA Convention was the first I attended, but being there and meeting all of you inspired me to get involved in more than just my nursing courses and use my past involvement experience to make the most our time as students. As a member of the Executive Board, I am looking to be part of the team that will lay a foundation for radically improving the efficacy of our organization and its programs. For the chapters located in Region 2, I am here to be a resource. Not only do I want to improve communication among the chapters and the board, but I also want to help with individual chapter affairs and bring the chapters together for regional meetings and events. I am also looking forward to streamlining our website to make it more user-friendly and more about what the chapters are doing. I am here for you, so please feel free to me at or to find me on facebook. Page 6

REGION 3 DIRECTOR/BTN CHAIR Who Has The Most Region Spirit? Represent Your Region Let Your Region Be Heard Nicole Couzzo FNSA_region3@yah oo.com My name is Nicole Couzzo. I am just finishing up my first semester in the nursing program at the University of Central Florida and loving it! In my local chapter I serve as the Junior Community Health chairperson. I learned so much through the seminars and serving as a delegate at Convention, but I really enjoyed just getting to know some of you and discussing our nursing experiences so far. FNSA is such a great way to network, learn about our field, and to help shape the future of nursing. I am thrilled to be a member of the FNSA executive board and to have this opportunity to represent Region 3! I have also been appointed to the Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN) committee. The committee works to recruit, represent, and mentor students interested in and working toward their RN. Nursing truly requires a special kind of person, so it is essential that we support students who have the same passion for it as we do! If you are interested in getting involved in BTN please feel free to contact me. REGION 4 DIRECTOR/Community Health Chair Lisa Fussell FNSA_region4@yaho o.com Hello, FNSA students and consultants. I know it was for me.! Page 7

As Region 4 Director, my goal for this year is to increase collaboration. I hope to see area schools supporting each other at community service events, and I would love to start it within my region. I m also excited about being the chairperson for Community Health because this service area benefits the local communities and the student nurses who participate. I have many ideas and cannot wait to share and implement them as this year progresses. 9 Let Your Region Be Heard! REGION 6 DIRECTOR/Legislative Chair My name is Limor Weinberg, and I'm the new Region 6 Director. This was my first NSA convention, and it was so inspiring to be nominated by my school and to feel the support from my fellow students, advisors, and delegates. I truly believe that we, as future nurses, need to stick together and rally for each other to get what we want locally as well as nationally. I am very honored and excited to be representing Florida nursing students in the upcoming school year. I am looking forward to our first meeting in December, and I m excited about all the creative ideas everyone has to make this the best year so far. Who Has The Most Region Spirit? Represent Your Region Limor Weinberg FNSA_region6@yahoo.c om REGION 7 DIRECTOR/Resolutions Chair Joshua Budny FNSA_region7@yahoo.c om Hello everyone my name is Joshua Budny and I am your new director for region 7 and also your new resolutions chairperson for I am very excited for my new roles and look forward to working with all of you and getting to know more about this state and its student nurses over the next year. A little about myself: I m currently Vice-President of Seminole State College of Florida s Student Nurse Association and love working with my students. I have a strong belief that nurses are the catcher s mitt of society and our commitment must always be to the weak and voiceless in society. I personally want to focus my practice on international humanitarian aid nursing. Nursing truly gives you a world of opportunities. I have a passion for nursing and feel blessed each and every day that I get to work with patients and be a part of my nursing program. However I feel that nursing reaches far beyond the bedside, nursing can t be contained in our scrubs, it doesn t stop at the end of the shift, it s not defined by borders, and its commitment is to humanity, always. Page 9

THE LITTLE CHAPTER THAT COULD AND DID Every year, FNSA issues an award for Chapter of the Year at their state convention, and schools all over the state fight for the honor, the bragging rights, and the trophy. This year was no exception. There was one remarkable thing about this year s recipient, South Florida Community College in Avon Park. Its drive and determination when facing the proverbial giants, the universities and colleges with much larger student populations. South Florida Community College has a small student base, approximately 80 student members. In two consecutive years, Chapter of the Year winner has had at least three times that amount and their SNA chapter is very active. As you can imagine, many of the other colleges and universities have a larger student base as well. As we all know, participation in SNA events, community service, and other point garnering activities is not what it ideally should be throughout the state within individual chapters. When looking strictly at the numbers, SFCC s members of the SNA felt the pressure of limited resources. There was a constant feeling of being outnumbered. Under the encouragement of our consultants and the leadership of a few students, SFCC was determined to achieve their lofty goal, to receive the coveted Chapter of the Year award. They set out on a mission, and often the cry And we get Chapter of the Year points was heard throughout the classrooms. The race was on and no one knew how we would finish, until the awards luncheon and its subsequent announcement. This year s Chapter of the Year award goes to... South Florida Community College! There was screaming, crying, and even a little victory dance. The moral of the story? It s not about the amount of students in the program, but the amount of heart within the students. Never let the numbers, nor doubts, dictate who or what you can become. Decide your destiny, strive for, and achieve your goals. At SFCC, we have all learned that anything is truly possible, if you put your heart into it. Amy R Wuthrich, President South Florida Community College CONGRATULATIONS SOUTH FLORIDA COMMUNITY COLLEGE!
