PROBLEM Bladensburg is faced with high crime rates, low income medians, and low graduation rates. We believe the problems all stem from the school system. The main issue Bladensburg faces is the low school performance rate. The percent of 9 th graders promoted to 10 th grade is an alarming 65% School wide SAT scores average were a low around 1128 HSA test scores show that only 53 68% of students take the test and meet requirements. These stats have led us to believe that the main problem is low interest among students. Source: Maryland Report Card 2
CAREER ACADEMY Earlier this year President Obama announced a $7 million grant to Prince Georges County schools to help fund the Career Academy. Currently the career academy at Bladensburg offers courses in: Barbering Cosmetology Food&Beverage Management Culinary Arts Nursing Biomedical Science 4
SOLUTION We believe that adding IT(Information Technology) classes to the career academy will help give students more opportunity to develop skills and enter the work force earning a higher salary and possessing a higher skill set. 5
PROGRAMS DESCRIPTION Students who are enrolled in this program will have the option of choosing between 3 courses all which span the four years of high school. Networking consists of organizing, installing, and supporting an organization s computer systems as well as their networks. Network security entails planning and carrying out security measures to protect an organizations computer network and systems. Computer science allows for programmers to code and create software programs and create instructions for computers to follow. 6
NETWORKING Goals To offer students the analytical skills to set up and maintain a stable and secure network Outcomes Successfully assembling and dissembling computers Configure computers to connect to a network Administer a network to maintain its stability and security Troubleshooting network errors and developing solutions 7
NETWORKING CURRICULUM 8
ADVANTAGES OF NETWORKING COURSES After taking these courses students will have earned a skill set which they can use to earn certifications such as Comp TIA A+ and CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). There is a wide variety of Jobs that use both certifications such as: IT support technicians $81,389 Network administrators - $72,560 Network engineers - $82,000 IT administrators $62,500 Source: Bureau of labor statistics 10
NETWORK SECURITY Goals To train students to be able to design, enact, and support security policies for a network. Outcomes Implement intrusion prevention Manage a secure network Secure network devices 12
SECURITY CURRICULUM 13
ADVANTAGES OF NETWORK SECURITY COURSES After taking courses that specialize in network security students earn the skills required to pass certifications such as the CompTIA Security+ and the Cisco CCNA Security. Some jobs that use the CompTIA Security+ and Cisco CCNA Security are: IT Security Analyst - $86,170 Security Architect - $115,000 Source: Bureau of labor statistics 15
INTRODUCTION 17
COMPUTER SCIENCE Goals For students to learn the fundamental concepts of writing in programming languages as well as programming essentials. Outcomes Formulate solutions to computing problems Design solutions through the use of programming languages. 18
COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULUM 19
ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES After students complete computer science courses they will have the skills needed to earn certifications in JAVA, JavaScript, and C/C++. Such certifications can lead to jobs such as: Computer Programmer $74,280 Web Developer $62,500 Software Developer - $93,350 Source: Bureau of labor statistics 21

SECONDARY PROBLEM Bladensburg high school has high truancy rates. Students are often found skipping class and hanging out in the woods. 27
SECONDARY SOLUTION In order to keep track of student attendance and ensure that they do indeed come to school we want to introduce a technology we refer to as Smart Card. Smart card holds all of the students essential information. Smart Card will be used to keep track of student attendance In the event that a student misses class an alert will be sent to the parent. 28
STUDENT TIMESHEET 29
STUDENT AND PARENT INFORMATION 30
SMART CARD ADVANTAGES Allow teachers to focus time on class rather than attendance. More accurate description of attendance for each class. Allow option for parents/guardians to receive alerts via text and or if student does not sign in. 31
