1 HIGH SCHOOL CAREER PATHWAYS High school students can pursue several career pathways during their time in high school. Career pathways allow students to receive training in specified career areas that build upon each other. Students who enroll in courses in a specific pathway are more likely to graduate from high school, earn a transferable industry credential (certification) and are more prepared for the rigor of postsecondary training. TYPES OF CAREER PATHWAYS Cluster: Health Science Pathways: Therapeutic Services or Diagnostic Services CTE Program Area: Health Sciences Education Career Academy: Vance Medical Academy Cluster: Law/Public Safety/Corrections/ Security Pathway: Emergency and Fire Management Services CTE Program Area: Trades & Industrial Education Career Academy: Fire/Public Safety Academy Cluster: Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Pathways: Animal Systems, Plant Systems or Food Products & Processing Systems CTE Program Areas: Agricultural Education and Family & Consumer Sciences Education Fire/Public Safety Academy Cluster: Architecture & Construction Pathway: Construction CTE Program Area: Trades & Industrial Education CTE (Career & Technical Education) Page 1

Career Clusters are groupings of occupations used as an organizational tool for curriculum design and instruction. The Career Cluster approach makes it easier for students to make course selections that are related to their educational goals. Career pathways consist of a series of courses that are connected because they support a pathway for a student to follow in preparation for specific careers. Career pathways eliminate guesswork and are clearly connected to postsecondary educational opportunities and/or business and industry career options. Page 2
3 Career Academies: Vance Medical Academy & Fire/Public Safety Academy Two career pathways have expanded into career academies. They include the Vance Medical Academy and the Fire/Public Safety Academy. Both are located on the campus of Southern Vance High School. Career academies are developed around a career theme. The Vance Medical Academy has a health science focus while the Fire and Public Safety Academy focuses on fire technology and public safety. Each year the same group (cohort) of academy students enrolls in Career and Technical Education courses aligned with the career theme. The curriculum is based on a career theme that helps students see relationships and connections between academic subjects and their application in the real world of work in a particular Career Cluster/Pathway. Career academies fully integrate academic and technical skills that prepare students for postsecondary education, training, and productive entry into the workforce. Each academy student participates in several work-based learning activities such as job shadowing, career fairs, career themed industry tours and internships. An application process is used for each academy. Descriptions of each academy and career pathways for each academy are provided in the sections that follow. VANCE MEDICAL ACADEMY The Vance Medical Academy (VMA) is a highly specialized medical career academy. It is designed to provide a strong foundation for successful entry into the Health Science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) career pathways. The VMA helps to prepare students for meeting the health science career projection for the 21st century. The VMA provides a rigorous curriculum, problem-based learning, industry certifications and opportunities to participate in clinical experiences in nursing homes, hospitals, clinics and/or private practices. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in college courses while in high school through the Promise Program at Vance-Granville Community College. Rising ninth graders are recruited each year and must complete the application process. Applications can be accessed online on the Vance County Schools webpage or through the middle school guidance counselors. Students who get accepted in the Vance Medical Academy will be expected to purchase at least two uniforms and wear them four days a week while at school. Students will also be expected to get a laptop during the laptop deployment period to use with the courses. Page 3

Career & Technical Education students in North Carolina graduate from high school at a high rate (90%). Almost all (95%) CTE students in NC complete high school on time. More than 9 out of 10 secondary CTE students in NC were employed, in the military, or in postsecondary education or advanced training six months after graduation in Credentialing makes a difference for NC high school students. Fifty-five percent of hiring managers consider employee certification as criteria for hiring and 46% of hiring managers consider employee certification as criteria for promotion. Nationwide, CTE programs are changing, evolving and innovating to better serve the country s needs. CTE is creating an educational environment that integrates core academics with real-world relevance. The North Carolina CTE Snapshot indicates that from : Business Management and Administration will be the largest Career Cluster overall.
