1 BUSINESS EDUCATION and COMPUTER SCIENCE MISSION The Office of Business Education supports schools in the development, implementation, and assessment of new courses and career completer programs, instructional strategies, and staff development that will enable students to enter the workforce upon graduation in a specific career pathway and/or be prepared to enter college. Business Education recognizes the uniqueness of each student and focuses on the preparation of all students to become life long learners and responsible citizens. Schools are supported in efforts to upgrade technological skills and equipment and to prepare students for the world of work and to be ready to succeed in a global economy. Academy of Finance (AOF) Internship (LN, OV) Course Number: An internship experience is required for students enrolled in the Academy of Finance (AOF) Magnet Program. Students will go through a carefully monitored interactive four to eight week experience in a financial workplace setting during the summer between their junior and senior year. Accounting I Course Number: Note: Elective in grades 10, 11, and 12 This course emphasizes basic accounting principles. Students learn how to interpret business forms and how to prepare a simple set of accounting records--journals, ledgers, and financial statements. Accounting II Course Number: Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accounting I This course reviews and extends the accounting principles learned in Accounting I and helps develop a marketable skill in keeping, analyzing, and interpreting accounting records and statements. Advanced Application Software & Design (PR) Course Number: This course provides the students the opportunity to develop applications using sophisticated computer software packages. Students work in teams to organize, manage, and develop large software projects. Software packages using animation and simulations will be used to develop applications. AP Computer Science A Course Numbers: Note: This course is also offered online The AP Computer Science A course is designed to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that of an introductory college course in Computer Science. AP Computer Science A emphasizes object oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development and includes the study of data 19 structures, design, and abstraction. The AP Computer Science A course is compatible with those topics that are covered in a typical college CS1 course in accordance with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)/Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) guidelines. AP Computer Science AB Course Number: Prerequisite: AP Computer Science A Note: This course is also offered online The AP Computer Science AB course is designed to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that of a sequence of introductory college courses in computer science. AP Computer Science AB will review all the topics covered in AP Computer Science A in greater detail and extend the formal and in-depth study of algorithms, data structures, design, and abstraction. The AP Computer Science AB course is compatible with those topics that are covered in a typical sequence of college CS1 and CS2 courses in accordance with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)/Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) guidelines. Banking & Credit (LN, OV, RN) Course Number: Academy of Finance (AOF) MAGNET Program Students will learn how the banking business operates, the careers associated with the banking industry, how credit is handled by the banking industry, and the consumer implications of credit. Business Communications Course Number: Note: Elective in grades 10, 11, or 12 This course gives students practice in developing communication skills in speaking, listening, and following oral instructions; understanding manuals, directories, and schedules; and, in developing competency in human relations skills as a necessary part of working in a team. Students will investigate self-understanding in relationship to customers and employers and will practice making oral business presentations, solving problems creatively within a team, and using sources of business information.

2 Business Internships Course Number: Prerequisite: The Business Education Internship Program provides guidance and assistance in helping students as they go through carefully monitored interactive experiences in the workplace setting. Internship experiences offer students a means to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to make appropriate and informed decisions in the career development process and to prepare them for lifelong learning. An internship offers the best opportunity to fuse academics with the real world and to optimize educational achievement. Business Law Course Number: /2 Note: Elective in grades 11 or 12 This course acquaints students with the judicial system as it applies to everyday business activities. It covers such topics as law and the minor, citizenship, criminal law, civil law, law enforcement, and the court system. The main course emphasis is on contracts--how they are made and what makes them legal. Additional topics include employment; sales and real estate contracts; buying, selling, and transferring goods; insurance; wills; and bailments. C++ Programming Course Number: Credit: Students will code, compile, and debug computer programs using proper programming protocol. Career Strategies Course Number: Note: This course follows the guidelines as suggested by the National Academy Foundation (NAF) for incorporation in academy programs. It may also be used as a stand-alone course for grades 9 and 10 students in order to start the decision-making process for planning the school-to-career transition. This course will allow the students to set goals, identify continuing educational opportunities, and improve course selection in order to explore multiple career paths. After developing a career plan, students will create a portfolio, explore school resources, prepare for college, and develop solid interpersonal skills. Computer Repair Course Number: This course focuses on computer components and operating system architecture. It is aligned to Comp TIA s A+ computer repair certification program. Students enrolled in this course are required to take the Comp TIA A+ certification exam prior to completion of the course. Cooperative Office Education Course Number: Course Number: COE-Office Technology & Procedures (Alternates for ) Course Number: COE-Cooperative Work Experience 11 Course Number: Credits: 1 Course Number: COE-Cooperative Work Experience 12 Credits: 1 Course Number: Credits: 3 Prerequisites: The approval of the teacher-coordinator is required. Successful completion of a keyboarding course is recommended Notes: Students earn 1 credit per semester for 15 hours weekly of cooperative work experience. Students register for the courses listed This program combines in-school study with a related work experience. During the morning, students attend classes for instruction and job-related activities. In the afternoon, students are employed in beginning office positions under the supervision of a teacher-coordinator. E-business Management Course Number: This class will deal with a broad spectrum of topics related to e-business, including e-commerce. The purpose of e-business is to prepare students to be productive employees and entrepreneurs of the fast-changing economy. This course will teach students that e-business is an essential component of the evolving economy. The goal is to teach students to embrace new technologies in e-business, preparing them for their continuing education and making them more valuable employees. E-business Technology Course Number: The purpose of this course is to analyze Web sites specifically targeted at the international market in order to gain an understanding of global e-business and successfully participate in the global marketplace. Students will conduct research online in order to determine the evolution of e- business technologies; identify and define current legal and ethical issues in order to evaluate and produce e-business Web sites; examine technical requirements of a system to support electronic commerce; evaluate hosting services and outsourcing options; and incorporate effective marketing techniques with current technologies in order to design an effective e-business Web page. Students will also identify various payment methods in order to create a secure and safe online payment system. 20

3 Economics and World of Finance (LN, OV, RN) Course Number: This course includes units in basic economic principles, government and economic systems, supply and demand, business organizations, capital markets, money and banking, the role of government, labor and economy, U.S. in the global economy, and career paths. Entrepreneurship Course Number: This course explores how to start, finance, manage, and market your own business. It features The Business Disc, an interactive laser disk which enables students to work with computers while making business decisions. Financial Management Using Software Applications Course Number: This course provides students with the knowledge and practice they need to make informed financial decisions and to successfully manage financial resources for a business. Banking, investing, borrowing, and risk management (insurance) are core content areas of this course. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of revenue, expenses, credit, and money management to enable them to make informed decisions in a highly technical and competitive society. Students will gain competencies in software using Microsoft applications and other financial software. Financial management is a skill that is essential in all business environments. Financial Planning (LN, OV, RN) Course Number: Academy of Finance (AOF) Magnet Program Students will learn the skills and knowledge needed to manage and plan the financial operations of a business. Hardware Design (PR) Course Number: This course focuses on computer components and operating system architecture. It is aligned to Comp TIA s A+ computer repair certification program. HTML/Javascript/Web Design (LR) Course Number: This course introduces the Hypertext markup language used in creation and display of pages on the World Wide Web. Students will learn HTML tags to create lists, tables, forms, images, and hyperlinks. Students will learn the syntax for the 21 JavaScript programming language to give their Web pages functionality such as slide shows, banners, and rollovers. Information Sys. Management I (CC, MM, SPT, WST) Course Number: Course Number: (GT) This course is designed to help students develop managerial and technical skills in a state-of-the-art technological office. Information Sys. Management II (CC, MM, SPT, WST) Course Number: Course Number: (GT) Prerequisite: Successful completion of Information Systems Management I This course is designed to help students develop managerial and technical skills in a state-of-the-art technological office. The program models a company, with the teacher assuming the role of the employer. This course will provide MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification, which sets a global standard for desktop productivity in corporations, academic institutions, staff agencies, training organizations, and individuals by using Microsoft Office applications. Information Technology I Course Number: Information Technology II Course Prerequisite: Successful completion of Information Tech. I Information Technology III Course Number: Prerequisites: Successful completion of Information Tech. I and II These courses are designed to give students a broad understanding of computer operations, programming, networking, ethical and legal issues, and integrating software applications. IT students receive hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment. Various software packages are used to demonstrate competency in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation applications. Programming languages include HTML, Visual Basic, C++ and more. At the conclusion of the sophomore year, IT instructors will select students to participate in CISCO networking training in their junior and senior years. International Business Course Number: Prerequisite: Grade 11 or 12 Standing This course is designed for students interested in gaining the knowledge and understanding necessary for participation in a global market economy. Specific areas of study will include: field of international business, elements of international business, international trade environments, economic concepts, geography, the role of the US in international trade, international marketing, international trade organizations,

4 international finance and monetary systems, international business careers, future trends in international business, and the development of sensitivity towards diverse cultures. International Finance (LN, OV, RN) Course Number: Academy of Finance (AOF) Magnet Program. Students will learn how companies outside the U.S. handle financial operations and how that affects businesses in the U.S. Keyboarding Course Number: Students completing this course will acquire a touch keyboard skill essential for the efficient use of microcomputers and other keyboard devices. Students are expected to type accurately by touch at 25 words per minute and to apply keyboard skills to simple projects. Students will learn to manipulate and create documents using Microsoft Word. Keyboarding and Applications Course Number: The major purpose of this course is to provide students with touch keyboarding skills and to develop entry level skills in using a word processing software program. This course develops basic skills in letter, simple table, memorandum, and report formatting. Students are required to apply decisionmaking skills to a variety of document formatting. Marketing Essentials Course Number: Note: Grade 11 or 12 Standing This course introduces students to areas of marketing, distribution, and entrepreneurship. Classroom instruction, combined with the high school s DECA activities, enables the students to gain a basic understanding of distribution as well as career opportunities. Activities include field trips, guest speakers, competitive events, projects, and student research based on individual occupational goals. Although employment is not required for this course, students are encouraged to secure part-time employment. Work-based learning is a strong component of the program, and will be treated as a priority. Marketing Management Course Number: Prerequisite: Grade 12 Standing This course allows students to develop the management skills necessary to start their own business and function in the corporate environment. Students will apply the foundations of marketing learned in the level one course. Our business partners requested the integration of soft skills. In response, this course will include decision-making skills, communication, team building, problem-solving, and customer service. 22 Marketing Management - Cooperative Work Experience Course Number: Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in Marketing, Course or Marketing Entrepreneurship, Course , and approval of teacher-coordinator are recommended This course allows students to develop the management skills necessary to start their own business and function in the corporate environment. Students will apply the foundations of marketing learned in the level one course. In response to business partners requests for the integration of soft skills, this course will include decision-making skills, team building, communication, problem solving, and customer service. Network Completer In the following courses, students will learn CISCO networking skills they will apply to design, build, and maintain computer networks capable of supporting national and global organizations. The goal is to provide students with an extensive background essential for a variety of employment and/or postsecondary college opportunities that can lead to becoming certified CISCO network installers. All students enrolled in the CISCO Academy program are required to take the appropriate CISCO industry certification exam at an authorized Prometric or Vue testing center prior to the completion of their program. Networking Completer I Course Number: Note: Industry Certification Exam Required The Cisco Networking Academy is an applied science/ mathematics/electronics program with an emphasis on computer equipment networking and troubleshooting. Students design, build, and maintain computer networks. The goal of the program is to provide students with an extensive and diverse computer networking background essential for a variety of employment and/or post-secondary college opportunities. Students who complete the program successfully may earn articulated college credits with CCBC. Networking Completer II Course Number: Prerequisite: Successful completion of Networking Completer II Note: Industry Certification Exam Required The Cisco Networking Academy is an applied science/ mathematics/electronics program with an emphasis on computer equipment networking and troubleshooting. Students design, build, and maintain computer networks. Students learn about software, troubleshooting skills, and networking to design, build, and maintain computer networks capable of supporting local, national, and global organizations. The goal is to provide students with an extensive and diverse computer networking background essential for a variety of post-secondary college and/or employment opportunities. Students who complete the program successfully are eligible to take Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) examination and may articulate college credit at local community colleges as they prepare for a wide variety of employment pathways in the computer networking field. Students who complete the program successfully may earn articulated college credits with CCBC.

5 Office Technology and Procedures I & II (DN, KN, LN, WD) Course Number: Note: This is a two-semester combination of courses and This course reflects the need for development of both speed and accuracy in keyboarding, as well as the flexibility to adapt to changing technologies. Principles of Accounting Course Prerequisite: Approval by the department chairman is recommended. Note: Elective in grade 11 or 12 Accounting principles are emphasized in this course which uses a college-level text. The course is designed for the student who wants to major in business administration in college. Principles of Business, Administration, and Management Course Number: This course provides students with knowledge of the types of businesses, as well as various applications, laws, and theories of business. Along with a brief historical perspective, business terminology and principles will be emphasized. Students will learn to analyze the functions of business through evaluating, planning, organizing, and controlling. Students will: develop the communication skills that are necessary for success in the workplace and college; be expected to think analytically; improve written and oral communication skills; enhance listening and questioning skills; learn and practice the art of conversation; improve public speaking skills; broaden their awareness of career options; practice using teamwork to make decisions and solve problems; and, learn why communication, people, and networking skills can help them succeed in their careers. Additionally, students will develop human resource skills as well as time management and setting priorities. Students will write grammatically correct correspondence and communicate orally. Software and Computer Applications II Course Number: Prerequisite: Successful completion of Software and Computer Applications 1 is recommended This course is designed for higher-level uses of problem solving and theoretical applications using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and/or presentation graphics software. Further emphasis is placed on oral and written communication skills and the use of technology to enhance work and life skills. Opportunities are provided to earn globally recognized certifications. Software and Computer Applications III (DN, PR, PT, PH OV, WD) Course Number: Prerequisite: Successful completion of Software and Computer Applications II and Computer Applications I and II is recommended The major purpose of this course is to help students further develop computer skills. Advanced Microsoft Office skills and the Microsoft Office Specialist certification program will be the major focus of this course. Students will be expected to think analytically and manipulate information to complete projectbased activities. Visual Basic Course Number: Visual Basic is a programming language that is rapidly growing in industry. Students will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate situations at home, school, or work and apply technology to complete tasks efficiently and effectively. Software and Computer Applications I Course Number: Prerequisite: Successful completion of a keyboarding course is recommended. Students will develop computer literacy that focuses on how computers are utilized for personal, educational, and professional use. The course will use word processing, spreadsheet, and database software in order to produce various documents. Students will be expected to think analytically, manipulate information, and use the computer as a productivity tool through integrated application programs. 23
