1 FRED HUTCHINSON CANCER RESEARCH CENTER SCHARP (Statistical Center for HIV/AIDS Research & Prevention) Remote Access 1 Getting Connected via Dial-Up If you do not have a local internet service provider, you may dial in directly to the SCHARP s PPP server. It can be reached at (206) or (800) SCHARP provides four 56K modems configured in a roll-over setup for dial-up purposes. SCHARP s modem pool provides internet access without SecurID, but will not connect to any internal resources without SecurID clearance. Note: SCHARP is not responsible for long distance charges incurred using SCHARP telephone numbers. Modem Standards and Performance A few factors affect your use of the SCHARP dial-in modems: The efficiency of the connection is limited by your modem s speed. If you are used to working in the office with a T1 connection to the internet, you will notice diminished speed when you transfer graphics, sound, or video files over a dial-in connection. To gain speed, you may need to change the way you work. For example, if you do not need to see the graphics in a document, you can set your graphical web browser so it does not display them. The efficiency of the connection also is limited by the telephone lines. Even if you buy the fastest modem on the market, moving data through phone lines is relatively slow. V.92 modems are designed to provide a maximum 56,000 bps connection rate between the modems. However, this speed is impossible since telephone company transmit power rules will only allow for 53,000 bps. (And this only happens on the rare, perfect telephone system call.) Connection rates on typical calls will be in the 37,333 to 48,000 bps range as a result of telephone system (not modem) limitations. Modem pool use is limited by the finite number of modems available. No matter when you use the modem pool, disconnect whenever you are not actively using the service. The modems are not intended to support any kind of full-time connections. Dial-Up Software The SCHARP dial-up system only supports PPP (Point to Point Protocol) using Dial-Up Networking. PPP provides the ability to transport network traffic over dial-up telephone lines. This allows users to run their GUI-based web browser, SCP client, etc. directly on their PC. Connecting via PPP gives your a computer a direct communications link to the internet. Also, PPP authenticates your computer on the network, so your computer has an identifying address (IP address) at which it can be contacted by other computers on the internet. 9 SCHARP Secure Remote Access Procedures Getting Connected via Dial-Up 1.2 Troubleshooting Modem Problems If you have problems connecting to SCHARP s modem pool, finding the problem can be difficult since the problem could be on either your end or ours. Therefore, there are multiple factors to test when trying to diagnose problems. Below is a checklist of items to get a successful dial out session through. A. Modem Setup Checklist 1. Computer and monitor plugged into live electrical outlet and turned on. 2. Monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to computer. 3. Telephone line active and telephone cable not damaged. 4. Telephone line sounding solid dial tone - not intermittent tone due to voice mail. 5. Telephone line plugged into modem LINE jack. 6. Communications Software is set to correct port for your modem. 7. (External) Modem connected to computer, plugged in and turned on. 8..(Internal) Modem is installed. 9. Call Waiting disabled (if you subscribe to this service). 10. Software correctly configured. 11. Not already dialed in using your Sailor PPP account using a second PC and phone line. B. Common Problem Symptoms and Possible Solutions Generally, the easiest solution to most problems (modem and/or software) is to reboot your computer. When the computer is restarted, the modem resets itself and any erroneous data is cleared from the system. If even after a reboot you are still experiencing problems, below is a list of symptom/problem descriptions and possible solutions to use to try to troubleshoot the error: 1. "NO DIAL TONE" Error Message a. Is your phone line connected to the modem s line jack and a wall jack? b. Is the cable between modem and telephone wall jack damaged? c. Is the correct COM Port (Connector) selected in your communications software? d. If you have more than one modem, is the one with the phone line selected? e. Modem driver not installed, or needs to be reinstalled. f. Make sure you have a solid dial tone (some voice mail system will have an intermittent dial tone when there are messages). 2. If you do not hear a dial tone, make sure that the sound is not muted on the system. 3. "Dialing" message from Dialer / Operator says, "I m sorry your call cannot be completed as dialed" a. Is the SCHARP telephone number entered correctly? b. Do you have to dial a prefix before the phone number from your location? Last Updated: 30-JUN-03 Page 9 of 12
10 Getting Connected via Dial-Up SCHARP Secure Remote Access Procedures 4. Busy Signal a. Is there a fax machine, or answering machine, plugged into the same phone line as your modem? b. Do you need to a prefix to get an outside line at the location from which you are dialing? c. SCHARP modems are busy. Try again later. 5. "NO CARRIER" Error Message a. Interference from phone company voice mail on your phone line. b. Interference from Call Waiting on your phone line (precede phone number with *70,,). c. Interference from other equipment on same phone line (answering machine, fax). d. Someone picked up an extension phone on the line you are using. e. SCHARP equipment problem. Notify SCHARP IT so we can test modems to see if we can replicate your problem. f. Local telephone line service quality problem. Try setting your modem to a lower speed (e.g.,14400 bps). 6. Call connects, but the PPP session hangs a. Hang up and dial again. b. Possible problem with SCHARP modems. Try again later. If problem persists, please notify IT. 7. You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed Error Message a. This message will be displayed in Dial-Up Networking if you attempt to establish two simultaneous sessions under your username. b. Hang up and dial again. 8. Call connects, but is dropped/disconnected a. Try dialing in at a slower modem speed. 9. Call connects, but browser can not reach any web sites a. Check under Control Panel->Network->Configuration to make sure you do not have more than one TCP/IP protocol listed to work with your Dial Up Adapter. b. Check to make sure you are not using Socks to get through firewall. 10. Call connects, but PuTTY does not recognize machine/hostname a. DNS is not enabled. Connect to IP address instead. 11. If you have tried many of the steps above without help, you may want to attempt to connect to a specific modem to see if the modem you connected to is having problems. Hang up and call back again to connect to a different line. If you are still connected to the same line, you can try dialing the other modems directly in order to avoid the problematic modem. 11 SCHARP Secure Remote Access Procedures Getting Connected via Dial-Up 1.3 Using Internet Applications Once you have successfully dialed-in to SCHARP s network using Dial-Up Networking, you will be able to use internet programs such as web browsers, terminal access programs (ssh), file transfer programs, etc. For terminal access, PuTTY, described earlier in this document, can be used to connect to an internal UNIX machine. You can follow the instructions detailed earlier. Last Updated: 30-JUN-03 Page 11 of 12
