About this role This training position is specifically for Registered Nurses enrolling in a Masters of Mental Health Nursing program which meets minimum criteria for application to become a credentialed mental health nurse. Incumbents in these positions will need to meet enrolment and academic requirements for their Masters of Mental Health Nursing program, as well as meet organisational and clinical standards of practice and performance. Participants will deliver care in a mental health facility, and will be supported by the education staff of the Nursing and Midwifery Education Service, in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Managers, Clinical Nurses and the multidisciplinary team. It is expected that participants complete the Masters Mental Health Nursing Program within two years. The key accountabilities of the role are: Provide direct nursing care based on the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce 2013, to consumers, in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse, Clinical Nurse Manager or preceptor. Assist in the development of individual treatment plans under the guidance and supervision of Clinical Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse, Registered Nurse or preceptor in the relevant clinical placement. This may also include administration of medication, assisting with activities of daily living, other collaborative responsibilities, and completing all documentation for care provided. Participate in multidisciplinary teams and liaise with other clinical professionals to effectively assist and participate in the development and implementation of nursing interventions to meet consumer care needs, admission and discharge planning. Initiate emergency responses when required and follow emergency procedures under instruction from Registered Nurse in charge of the ward at the time. Participate in care coordination of consumers under the guidance and supervision of the Clinical Nurse, experienced Registered Nurse or preceptor. Actively and constructively participate in regular monthly Clinical Supervision. Comply with the prescribed academic and clinical requirements of the Masters of Mental Health Nursing program to ensure successful completion of the program within two years. Demonstrate ethical decision making in the achievement of the organisation s goals and comply with the requirements of the Queensland Public Service Code of Conduct. Actively contribute to developing and maintaining a culture which values health and safety and where staff are vigilant to risks of harm to their co-workers, clients or visitors. Actively participate in the Health Service Performance Planning and Appraisal and Individual Development Planning processes.

2 Attributes required for effective performance in this role. Mandatory Qualifications / Professional Registration: Appointment to this position requires proof of qualifications and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association i.e. Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to the commencement of clinical duties. The successful completion of, or the ability to complete, the Queensland Health sponsored Aggressive Behaviour Management (ABM) Course on appointment is mandatory. Applicants must be accepted for enrolment in a Masters of Mental Health Nursing Program which is offered within Australia and which will lead the student to be eligible to apply for credentialing as a Mental Health Nurse on successful program completion. Continued employment in this temporary position is directly linked to enrolment and successful participation in the Masters of Mental Health Nursing program (according to the university s prescribed schedule of study) AND achieving the required clinical competencies and standards of organisational and clinical performance. Failure to meet either of these role requirements may result in the early termination of this employment contract. Incumbents are expected to participate in clinical placements / rotations which will occur between Ipswich based and Wacol based Mental Health Services. During clinical placements, staff are subject to the conditions of the relevant industrial award governing the specific facility. There may be opportunity to extend the initial temporary contract for up to a further 12 months temporary contract following the successful completion of the initial temporary contract. Decisions to offer an additional 12 month contract will be based on the incumbent s demonstrated academic progress and clinical performance, as well as their intention to complete the academic program within this extended contract timeframe. This position is sited within Mental Health and Specialised Services and incumbents may be required to work from a number of Hospital and Health Service sites. Incumbents may be required to work shifts on a roster within some components of the service. All employees working shifts may be required to work on a continuous shift basis i.e. morning, afternoon and night shifts. The shift work may apply over a seven (7) day week inclusive of Public Holidays. This position may require the incumbent to operate a C-class vehicle, and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided before commencement of duty. Presently it comprises Supra District services of: Extended Treatment and Rehabilitation/ Dual Diagnosis Clinical Program (17 beds) Medium Secure Clinical Program (34 beds) High Security Inpatient Services (HSIS) (70 beds) The HSIS provides a highly supervised, supportive and secure environment for individuals involved with the criminal justice system and who present with complex mental health needs requiring assessment and/or treatment and rehabilitation. All services operate twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
