Frame Work PROBA - V(EGETATION) PROBA-V is a mission based on an advanced PROBA platform carrying a multi-spectral instrument capable of providing enhanced data continuity to the Vegetation mission carried out by SPOT-4 and SPOT-5, before Sentinel 3 is fully deployed. Proba-V is a Gap Filler mission between SPOT-5 and Sentinel 3. Proba-V project was approved at the March 2008 ESA Industrial Committee The PROBA-V mission is developed as part of the In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) strategy in the frame of the ESA General Support Technology Program (GSTP). Proba-V PROBING VEGETATION, 5 July 2013 Slide 3
Mission Objectives (1) Proba-V(egetation) Mission Objectives are Monitoring of land use, land cover and its changes, Vegetation behavior in response to strong meteorological events and to climatic changes Long term behavior of the vegetation Disaster management (draught, flood, fire), These applications are of interest for institutional, scientific and also commercial users. On top of its In-Orbit Demonstration character, Proba-V is an operational mission that will deliver data to the SPOT/Vegetation community of users Data products Compatible with SPOT/VGT (1 km) top of the atmosphere P1, top of canopy S1 synthesis 1 day and S10 synthesis 10 day The 1 km product (mandatory) complemented by the 1/3 km (goal) same products Product delivered to users by User Segment (1km and 1/3 km) and by ESRIN GMES Portal Proba-V PROBING VEGETATION, 5 July 2013 Slide 4
Mission Objectives (2) Vegetation Payload Requirements: Mission Lifetime is 2.5 years with the goal to reach 5 years (mainly limited by the orbit LTDN drift). Additionally, to the vegetation objectives, position was reserved for 2 additional technological payloads, finally 5 technological payloads are flying on-board (including the first ever air traffic monitoring from space). 11 Early Operation Phase Launched on-board Vega VV-02 flight as main passenger Launch 6 May :06 from Kourou LEOP performed as planned in less than 24 hours Orbital Injection was perfect, LTDN (10:30 to 11:30) requirements will be met for more than 4 years Proba-V PROBING VEGETATION, 5 July 2013 Slide 11
Commissioning Status Platform commissioning The commissioning of the Proba-V platform started on May 8. All equipment's (primary and redundant) of the platform have been tested in-orbit. Performances are within the specified requirements (mandatory and goal). The platform commissioning has been completed on June 21. Instrument commissioning One week after launch, the commissioning of the instrument started. First image 15 May All instrument subsystems (primary and redundant) have been verified in-orbit. Image Quality (radiometry, geometry, dark, linearity) verified in orbit The instrument is used continuously/autonomously with on-board with a land/sea mask The instrument commissioning is planned to be completed on July 19. User Segment commissioning Early June, the commissioning of the User Segment started Up to now up to 5 passes/day were acquired using a land/sea mask covering 50% of earth Processing up to level 1A, 1B, 1C and 2 demonstrated. First S10 synthetic global earth The User Segment commissioning is planned to be completed end August Proba-V PROBING VEGETATION, 5 July 2013 Slide 12
Conclusions The satellite has been perfectly injected in-orbit by VEGA (VV-02). The early operation phase was flawless. The commissioning of the satellite is now finalised. The commissioning of the Vegetation Instrument is on-going, the initial results are showing excellent performances. The User Segment commissioning is on-going. More than 100GBytes have already been processed. Long term calibration have been started and last up to November before the handover to Earthwatch program. Up to 5 technological payloads are flying and have been commissioned or are under final calibration. Proba-V will continue 15 years series of Vegetation data acquisition started with SPOT4/VGT Proba-V PROBING VEGETATION, 5 July 2013 Slide 13
