1 Training Programme 5 day Training on and Adaptation Developed by: Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) [A comprehensive training module along with guideline for trainers aiming to enhance capacity of different stakeholders to understand climate change better and explains several frameworks, tools and techniques to facilitate planning and designing community based adaptation projects]

2 5-Day Training on and Adaptation Programme Day One: Understanding Science, Scenario, Responses to and Justice, and Basic terminology Welcome, Opening and Introductions Basic Climate Change Science: Global Warming, Greenhouse Gases and Consequences Scenarios Registration Welcome Address by Host Chapter 01 of the Module Course introduction, objective of the training course, contents of the training course, methods to be applied, training materials to be used, facilitators and their role during the training, review of the logistical matters etc. Self Introduction by all participants Sharing their expectations Question and Answer Approach: Participatory to create warm atmosphere, Ice-breaking season through exploring individual extra curriculum One presentation will be made introducing training programme, contents and approaches Chapter 02 of the Module What is weather and climate, what is climate change, what is global warming, source of greenhouse gases, consequences of GHG concentration in the atmosphere (mainly temperature change) Approach: One Powerpoint Presentation, Purpose: Purpose of this session is to introduce basic climate change science and form a base to discuss the issue further as well will also be used to assess knowledge of the participants on basic climate change science. Chapter 03 of the Module This session will introduce the trainees with the different climate change scenarios and their consequences such as 1. Ice melting and Sea level Rise Responses to Mitigation and Adaptation and Justice Chapter 04 of the Module This session will discuss two key response measures to deal with climate change i.e. mitigation and adaptation. What are the fundamental differences, global injustice regarding carbon emission, equal rights on atmosphere and earth, equal rights to development, compensation regarding carbon emission and the injustice between survival and luxury. Afternoon-2 Key Terminologies Approach: One Powerpoint Presentation on Climate Justice, Tea Break Chapter 05 of the Module Key terminologies of climate change: Impacts, vulnerability, adaptation, mitigation, risk, hazards, shock, variability, trend, exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity etc. Approach: One Powerpoint Presentation, Purpose: The purpose of this session is to assess knowledge base of the participants on different terminologies of climate change and bring them on a common ground. Day Two: Understanding the Impacts, Vulnerability and linkage between climate change and disaster Impacts of Chapter 06 of the Module This will cover impacts of climate change on different sectors under different climate change scenarios. Approach: One Powerpoint Presentation on sectoral impacts based on IPCC Assessment Report, Training Facilitated by Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) 2

4 5-Day Training on and Adaptation Afternoon-2 Impacts of Vulnerability to Linkage between and Disaster Continue.. This will cover impacts of climate change on different regions of the world under different climate change scenarios. Chapter 07 of the Module Concept of vulnerability, vulnerability to natural, physical and social system, how vulnerability varies within societies etc. Tea Break Chapter 08 of the Module The session titled Link Between and Disaster is designed to provide Identification of area specific extreme climatic events or disasters; i.e. flood, cyclone, etc. Analysis of intensity and frequency of those events depending on temporal dimension Vulnerability of the community to those events Day Three: Adaptation to, Link between Adaptation & Development, Methods and Tools for Assessment and Group Exercise Adaptation to Chapter 09 of the Module Adaptation science, types of adaptation, context specificity of adaptation etc. Training Facilitated by Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) 3

5 5-Day Training on and Adaptation Link between Adaptation to Climate change and Development Methods and Tools: Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation Chapter 10 of the Module This session will cover link between adaptation and development, where commonalities and differences exist. on different report, Chapter 11 of the Module This session will cover different top-down and bottom up methods and approaches. on IPCC Assessment Report, One bottom-up methodological Presentation from the region or from the host Tea Break Afternoon-2 Group Exercise Chapter 11 of the Module In this session, the trainees will be segregated into groups and they will assess vulnerability of different sectors based on local knowledge. Approach: Group formation, deliberation of group works on work sheet, Group presentation, Day Four: Field Visit Day Five: Introduction to LOCATE and EXERCISE Introduction of LOCATE Hands-on Exercise Chapter 12 of the Module This session will introduce a top-down and bottom framework to design community based adaptation project. The framework will also cover different tools and approaches for vulnerability and adaptation need assessment. Approach: One Powerpoint Presentation on LOCATE, One Presentation on application of this Framework, Continue This session will use different exercises for analyzing community level vulnerabilities, and their adaptation needs to deal with adverse impacts of present and future climate. 6 5-Day Training on and Adaptation exercise will allow participants to think their own context (country, region, sector, vulnerable groups) Approach: Breakout groups, facilitated by exercise using examples and defined format, Afternoon-2 Afternoon-3 Hands-on Exercise Hands-on Exercise Concluding Session Continue This session will use different exercises for analyzing community level vulnerabilities, and their adaptation needs to deal with adverse impacts of present and future climate. The exercise will allow participants to think their own context (country, region, sector, vulnerable groups) Approach: Breakout groups, facilitated by exercise using examples and defined format, Presentation from the Group Approach: Presentation from the Breakout groups, This session will capture feedback and finally conclude the training session.
