MOIS Manufacturing and Operations Information System
Agenda 1. Common System Developer/Operator Problems 2. Solutions 3. What is MOIS? 4. MOIS Missions 5. MOIS Toolset Overview 2
Procedures Used to formalise spacecraft operations and system tests Can be many 1000s of procedures per mission. Capture knowledge of test and operations Contain commands and parameters for spacecraft, equipment under test, check-out equipment, ground systems etc. Linked to spacecraft TM/TC database (and other databases if needed) Multiple procedure formats Tables (traditional manual procedures) Flow-charts Scripting languages (specialised or generic) Commonality between Test and Operations procedures Configuration control becomes a significant requirement Database Spacecraft models (EM, PFM, FM etc.) Test vs. operations 3
Problems Consistency with DB The System Procedures preparation process requires consistency with the TM/TC database. Without a proper tool to manage TC/TM database consistency system developers and operators Face continuous needs for review Spend considerable time for continuous updates Often find inconsistencies in the different products The consequence is reduced quality of the procedures and considerable expenses in terms of man/hours. Lead to higher risks and higher costs. 4
Problems Extensive Retraining The Procedure preparation process usually requires the knowledge of an Procedure Language Often specified by the related MCS or CCS May be different according to the missions May be different between test and operations Staff (AIT Engineers, Ops engineers, Operators) require extensive training to learn the required Procedure Language. Newcomers shall require more time to perform full speed in the team. The result of not using a generic and fast to learn procedure format is excessive use of man/hours. Higher costs. 5
Problems Procedures Handover AIT, Operations preparation and Operator teams need to exchange the procedures throughout the system lifecycle. Different experience and different knowledge of the required procedure language increases the risk for inconsistencies in the handover prices. The teams involved shall also adapt their knowledge to the one of the other teams, additional training may be required with resulting increase in the need for man/hours. The result of not using a generic and fast to learn procedure format is excessive use of man/hours and risk for inconsistencies in the products. Higher risk and higher costs. 6
Solutions Problem Consistency with Database Need for Extensive Retraining Procedure Handover Solution A tools that guarantees automatic and consistent update of the procedures when the DB changes. A tool that allows procedure preparation in a generic format, user friendly and fast to learn. The procedures are exportable in specific OL when required. A tool that allows procedure preparation in a generic format, user friendly and fast to learn. The procedures exportable in specific OL when required. 7
What is MOIS? MOIS Manufacturing & Operations Information System The industry leading suite of integrated tools for spacecraft and ground segment testing, operations preparation and satellite AIT MOIS has been chosen to support more than 80 different satellites 8
Product Manages Satellite Test and Operations Data Design, Develop, Validate, Execute Acts as an information and knowledge bridge between systems Manufacturer => Operator Old => New Interfaces with many control systems, third party procedures and databases Provides integrated configuration control, problem reporting, & management reporting 9
MOIS Benefits Reliability & Safety The prime concern of spacecraft manufacturers and operators. Quality Consistency and control of data, procedures always consistent with TM/TC Database. Flexibility Open interfaces for maximum adaptability. Interface with different MCS and CCS, possibility to export in a number of procedure languages. Transportability Demonstrated history of minimizing knowledge transfer costs. Generic procedure format. Cost-effectiveness Prevents duplications of operations procedures. Minimizes required manual updates of procedures. User-friendliness Built around commonly used 3rd party products (MS Office) 10

Private and Public Organisations choose MOIS because it increases quality and reduces cost, time and risk. 16
MOIS Toolset overview MOIS Flowcharter - Procedure design and flow control. MOIS Writer - Procedure / Timeline editor. MOIS Supervisor Supervise execution environment. MOIS Test Harness TM/TC validation support. MOIS Executor / Validator Manual and/or automatic execution MOIS Scheduler Create, check and run plans MOIS Function Editor Edit functions and directives. MOIS Library Library overview, configuration control, administration MOIS Reporter Problem tracking, summary reporting. MOIS Publisher Publish Flight Operations Manuals MOIS DB Import and edit of Spacecraft database. 17
Integrated Mission Control Segment 18
Flowcharter Create, edit and display procedure structures using a flowchart. Structured procedure editing. Procedures can be constructed entirely in Flowcharter. 19
Writer Tabular view editor for creating operational procedures and timelines. Customised procedure layouts with user-defined rules. References the latest mission database snapshot. 20
Function Editor Create and edit Functions and Directives. Create Jython scripts to be executed directly by the MOIS Executor (e.g. for customised logging). 21
Reporter reports Create, generate and schedule summary reports: Procedure status, database cross checks, system problem report summaries. Edit/write queries. Edit/create groups. Edit create cross checks. View reports. Run update queries. 22
Reporter - SPRs Report SPRs coming from the procedure preparation and or validation process. Report related Change Specifications for SPR closure 23
Executor/Validator Runs directly with Test Harness, Control centre or EGSE. No need for intermediate code output. Real time visualisations of test in progress using integrated displays. Results of validation are displayed and saved. 24
Scheduler Conflict free plan showing: Orbit events. Ground-station passes. Operational Request activities. Direct execution or MTL. (Mission Time Line) generation. Automation execution monitoring 25
MOIS for On-Board Automation ATV Fully automated procedures for ISS docking & close proximity operations Master procedure control for ground & onboard automation. On-Board Control Procedures (OBCP) Automation on-board without development/updates of on-board software. Implemented in MOIS Writer and/or Editor available. Complex OBCP for deep space [ Bepi-Colombo, GAIA ] Simple/Deterministic OBCP [ Sentinel-2, EarthCare] Initially developed by Prime & passed to Operations 26
OBCP Editor 27
Procedure Languages MOIS is able to export procedures in a number of Procedure Languages (e.g. TOPE, PLUTO, SPELL, ELISA, STOL) The export can be customized according to the need of the customer and of the Mission Control System (MCS) or Command Control System (CCS). Procedure can be prepared in MOIS generic format and exported in the required Procedure Language. For some procedure languages, editors have been developed e.g. PLUTO. 28
PLUTO Editor 29
Conclusions MOIS is the leading toolset for procedure preparations, management and testing. MOIS allows high flexibility in handing over procedures and fast integration of new users. MOIS, when required, implements procedures automation and allows export in a large number of Procedure Languages. MOIS leads to lower costs and risks for the projects where it is applied. 30
