1 Español II Señora Kinneman Course Description In this course the Spanish II student studies culture, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Oral presentations are also an element of the class. The Spanish II student is required to complete daily homework assignments in addition to keeping a notebook. Quizzes, unit tests, notebooks, oral presentations (including current events), homework, class participation and cumulative assessments are used to evaluate the student. The class will be conducted the majority of the time in Spanish. Textbook AND workbooks will be dispersed to each student with the expectation that they are returned in the same condition in which they were received. Course Requirements In order to pass Spanish II, students are required to complete all assignments/projects, take all quizzes, all tests and the cumulative assessment. In addition, a student must have a 64% average to pass the course at the end of the year. Students must maintain at least a 75% average to advance to Spanish III. Students must keep a notebook for Spanish class. The notebook should be separated into 4 sections: vocabulary/culture/ notes/worksheets. (Notebook quizzes will be given at the end of each marking period. Students should refer to Moodle for copies of notes/worksheets/practice sites. Students should also refer to my blog for day to day activities, especially if absent from class. Behavioral Expectations Arrive to class on time and be in your seat when the bell rings. Arrive to class prepared. (have textbook/workbook/notebook/writing utensil at beginning of class) Refrain from disruptive behavior Speak with respect to all. Deal with situations appropriately: Do NOT argue. Adhere to the dress code. Keep your hands to yourself. Avoid the use of profanity or inappropriate language of any kind in the classroom, even when speaking with friends. Engage only in conversations appropriate for the school environment. Follow instructions the first time they are given. Do your own work. Obtain the teacher s permission before leaving your seat. Do not talk when taking a test or a quiz until the teacher has all of the papers.
2 If any of these expectations are not met the proper consequences will follow. (Check your agenda!) Grading System The number of grades will vary each marking period. Students can expect at least one quiz a week. In each unit of study there will be a minimum of 2 vocabulary quizzes and 2 grammar quizzes, as well as a test at the end of each unit. Students and parents are encouraged to frequently check Infinite Campus. If a student is absent and returns on the day of a quiz he/she will be required to take this quiz if this quiz is testing information that the student has been required to study previous to his/her absence. The following policy will be used for spelling on vocabulary quizzes and tests. If the word is spelled incorrectly, it is wrong. If an accent mark is missing, or there is a mistake in gender 50% of the entire value of the word will be deducted. Grades will be done on a points basis. The number of points assigned to quizzes/homework/classwork will vary. A Unit Test is usually worth 100 points and the grade will be doubled, and the Cumulative Assessment grade will be tripled. Class participation will be graded every marking period, and it will be approximately 20% of the marking period grade. Participation will be based on the following criteria: The number of voluntary responses given by the student, The number of solicited responses given by the student, The use of the target language, The accuracy of the response, The voice quality used when answering, Paying attention in class, The efficient use of class time, How well the student works in groups. Surprise quizzes may be given. These quizzes will test grammar points and vocabulary words that the students are required to study. Homework in also extremely important to practice the skills presented in class. Homework will be checked/graded randomly. No late homework assignments will be accepted for credit. Diagnostic Assessment During the first week of the school year, students will complete an assessment based on the information covered in Spanish I. The test will take place over 2 days. Students will have the opportunity to make in class corrections before a grade is entered for the diagnostic assessment. After corrections are made, students will receive and be expected to complete additional activities based on their areas of need/concern.
3 Cumulative Assessment An exam will be given at the end of the fourth marking period that will include all of the vocabulary, grammar and cultural topics that were studied and discussed in class during the school year. The cumulative assessment will be a two part exam. The first part will be based on vocabulary/culture, and the second part will be based on grammar. The test will be given over 2 test days. Quiz/Test Revision Students that score below a 70% on a quiz/test have the option to get extra help and retake the quiz/test. The original score and the retake score will be averaged to determine a final score for that quiz/test. The extra help and retake must take place within one week of the original quiz/test date.
