1 Ionizing radiation, genetic and embryonic risk: Chernobyl data and new insights 21 April 2006, Brussels, Belgium Scientific seminar organized by FANC-AFCN, the Belgian Federal Agency for Nuclear Control, In cooperation with SCK.CEN, the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre Introduction The first objective of this seminar is to assess the up-to-date scientific data in the field of radiation-induced genetic and embryonic risk, including the uncertainties and the research needs. Risk of hereditary diseases resulting from exposure of human populations to ionizing radiation is currently revised downwards by international organizations. At the same time, new data coming from studies on human and animal populations affected by the Chernobyl accident and from radiobiological research are raising concern. The same is true for the effects of in utero irradiation during the first stages of pregnancy, where new research data on genetic susceptibilities question current risk evaluations and should be taken into account when interpreting the post-chernobyl observations. A second objective of the seminar will be to discuss the possible implications of the new data on the radiation protection standards and policy, including the ethical aspects. This part of the seminar will include a panel discussion between various stakeholders, some of them not belonging to the radiation protection community (journalist, philosopher, geneticist, ). The meeting, which aims at being at the same time scientifically accurate and easily understood by educated laymen, will take place at the Métropole hotel, located in the heart of Brussels.

After the seminar, the full papers will be accessible free of charge on the web site of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control: The seminar language is English. No translation is foreseen. By plane: From the National Brussels Airport (Zaventem): the participant can take a train to reach the centre of the city (Brussels Central Station). This station is 15 minutes' walk away from the Metropole Hotel. By train or public transport: Train: Brussels Central Station is 15 minutes' walk away from the Metropole Hotel. There are various underground stops as well as bus stops at the Place De Brouckère. The De Brouckère underground station has connections with lines 1A and 1B, and there is an underground tram stop for lines 23, 52, 55, 56 & 81.
