1 Black British Art in Hackney Black History Season at Hackney Museum Brief for the development and delivery of workshops for schools, as part of Black History Season 2016 at Hackney Museum. This brief as been prepared by Hackney Museum June 2016

2 Project Outline In October 2016 we will open Black British Art in Hackney a brand new temporary exhibition in Hackney Museum s main gallery. From October to January over 2000 Hackney primary school children will visit the exhibition to take part in interactive tours/workshops with an artist/practitioner that will transport them into the past and inspire them about their future in Hackney. We are looking for an arts practitioner such as a visual artists, poets, spoken word artists, musicians etc from Hackney or with an interest and knowledge of Hackney to work with us to develop and deliver these sessions. The exhibition: This exhibition will explore the experiences of people of African and Caribbean heritage in Hackney since the 1960s to the present day through their cultural and artistic responses.. Focusing on the role and influence of local grassroots groups and organisations like Centerprise Bookshop in Dalston, Hackney Empire and local artists, this exhibition explores the growing community arts movement in Hackney and how new communities were supported to express themselves, their experiences and their cultural identity. Visitors to the exhibition will discover the lives and experiences of key people and organisations making waves in literary, educational and visual arts circles at the time and how they influenced the artistic and cultural scene in Hackney today. Brief: Black British Art in Hackney Local primary school pupils aged 7-11 will work with you to explore Hackney s thriving artistic and cultural scene in the past and how pioneering individuals and organisations making waves in literary, educational and visual arts circles then, influenced people in Hackney This exciting workshop could explore these ideas using art, museum objects, storytelling, poetry, spoken word, drama and/or song. We would like you to incorporate the following into a 90 minute workshop for a school class of 30 pupils: Setting the scene for learning about African and Caribbean community history in Hackney. We would like pupils to learn about key points in the history that relate to, and provide a context for, exploring and celebrating their own sense of roots, identity and belonging (wherever their family has roots). A creative element to enable pupils to explore their own sense of identity. This could be an abstract exploration through storytelling/ performance or poetry/spoken word piece, or a creative piece or artwork inspired by the artists, poets and pioneers on show in the exhibition.

3 Evaluation: You will need to follow Hackney Museum s evaluation framework in collaboration with Hackney Museum staff. Experience and Knowledge: - We will consider applications from facilitators / artists from a range of practices artists, musicians, poets, performers, storytellers, actors etc. - Specialist knowledge and / or experience of African and Caribbean history / culture / heritage in Hackney essential - A passion and ability to communication and foster a sense of pride in the audience - Experience of working with primary school pupils in a creative workshop setting aged Ability to support children to explore their own creativity and ideas about migration, identity, roots and belonging - Experience of working collaboratively in a community venue, museum, archive or gallery - Experience of working with diverse audiences - An interest in the intersection of local/british and African/Caribbean history / culture / heritage - Awareness and confidence working with young people - A self starter and inspiring facilitator with a gift for engaging children in exploring big themes to learn about their own cultural heritage Logistics: - Up to 15 days of workshops (Wednesdays & Thursdays during October & November 2015) - Up to 3 x hour classes/sessions per day (9am 3.30pm including set-up and pack away) - Workshop demonstration at Teacher s INSET (15/09/ pm) - Planning meeting at Hackney Museum (09/08/2016 TBC) - Project planning (up to 1.5 days in your own time) - There is an additional small materials budget - Total contract fee - 3,000 gross* o PAYE contract: tax and national insurance deducted at source o *Your tax contribution cannot be confirmed; this depends on your other income circumstances. Should you be taxed at the incorrect tax code you will need to contact the HMRC directly at the end of the financial year, once you have received your LB Hackney P60 o Appropriate Public liability insurance if you are registered as a company o You must be eligible to work in the UK

It will not be possible to change any of the interview, planning, Inset or workshop dates or times. o Application deadline: 5pm, Friday 15 th July o Shortlisting for interview by: Monday 18 th July o Interviews: Thursday 21 st July o Planning session: Tuesday 9 th August Time TBC, flexible o Teacher s INSET: Thursday 15 th September 4.30pm-6pm o Workshops: Wednesdays & Thursdays from 4 th October 24 th November 2016 Application Process: You have a choice. Please apply with either a written session/workshop plan OR a short film/video message (3 mins max) demonstrating why you should be considered for the role. Your session plan or film should consider how you would approach the development and facilitation of a 90 minute session/workshop on the themes outlined in the brief with a class of 30 children age Use the information provided above, your own knowledge and experience of Black History Season and African, Caribbean history/culture and of leading workshops with young children to inform your plan. - Please note: this is not a traditional exhibition tour or a making session, but an inclusive, interactive, engaging and creative experience for children that takes place in the exhibition space. - Please note: we are not necessarily looking for the most skilled lessonplanners out there (we can help with that).
