1 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING The General Educatin Prgram fr Engineering Students While a cmprehensive understanding f science and mathematics is central and fundatinal t effective engineering practice, real-wrld engineering prblems are bth cmplex and situated within dynamic scial, plitical, and cultural cntexts. Therefre, well-runded engineering curricula must als include curses that encmpass the breadth f human experience and culture, bth past and present. Such curses may include, but are nt limited t, thse that explre individual behavir, scial and plitical structures, aesthetic values, mdes and dynamics f cmmunicatin, philsphical and ethical thught, and cgnitive prcesses. These types f curses prvide engineering students with a framewrk fr ratinal inquiry, critical evaluatin, and judgment when dealing with issues that are nn-quantifiable, ambiguus, and/r cntrversial. In additin, they ffer engineering students the pprtunity t develp interests and insights that will deepen their appreciatin fr the diversity f the wrld in which they live and wrk. Based n these premises, the gals f the Cllege f Engineering General Educatin Prgram are t Prvide the brad educatin necessary t understand the impact f engineering slutins in a glbal, ecnmic, envirnmental, and scietal cntext. Supprt and cmplement the technical cntent f the engineering curricula thrugh cursewrk that emphasizes such skills as written cmmunicatin, ral cmmunicatin, infrmatin literacy, cultural awareness, leadership, innvatin, entrepreneurship, and managing change. These gals are cnsistent with the bjectives f the Cllege f Engineering s Engineer f initiative, as well as the bjectives f Purdue University s Undergraduate Outcmes-Based Curriculum 2. Prgram Cmpnents 1. Fundatinal Learning Outcmes (FLOs) 3 Students must select frm the list f curses apprved by the University Cre Cuncil (UCC) t satisfy all six f the Fundatinal Learning Outcmes (available belw) Written Cmmunicatin Oral Cmmunicatin Infrmatin Literacy Humanities 1 Engineering Faculty Dcument (April 9, 2007) 2 University Senate Dcument 11-7 (February 20, 2012) 3 The Science and Quantitative Reasning Fundatinal Learning Outcmes are handled elsewhere in the engineering curricula. 1

Students must earn a C- r better in rder t receive credit twards meeting each Fundatinal Learning Outcme listed abve and this General Educatin Prgram. 3. At least 24 ttal credit hurs are required. 4. At least 12 credit hurs must be taken frm the Cllege f Liberal Arts, the Krannert Schl f Management, and/r the Hnrs Cllege prvided such curses are nt fcused primarily n engineering, technlgy, the natural sciences, r mathematics. (Nte: ENGL 10600/10800 and COM cunt twards these requirements). 5. At least 6 credit hurs must cme frm curses at the level r abve, r frm curses with a required prerequisite in the same department (e.g. SPAN requires SPAN as a pre-requisite). 6. Curses frm the Clleges f Engineering, Science, and Technlgy can nly be used twards the general educatin prgram if they satisfy FLOs. 7. If EPCS curses are taken t satisfy a fundatinal learning utcme then three (3) credits must be taken. If EPCS curses are used t fulfill a General Educatin requirement, they may nt be used t fulfill a Technical Elective requirement in IE. 8. Curses must be drawn frm either the list f curses apprved by the University Cre Cuncil (UCC) as meeting an FLO, r frm the fllwing Clleges/Schls/Departments: Cllege f Health and Human Sciences Cllege f Liberal Arts Krannert Schl f Management Entrepreneurship Department f Agricultural Ecnmics Interdisciplinary Studies 9. Credit is nt allwed fr language curses in the student s native tngue(s), althugh literature, culture, drama, and related curses are allwed. *Special cnsideratin may be given t curses utside f these Clleges/Schls/Departments at the discretin f the IE undergraduate cmmittee (r their designee). Excluded curses frm the abve Clleges/Schls/Departments will be at the discretin f the IE undergraduate cmmittee (r their designee). 4 If a curse taken t fulfill sme ther degree requirement has als been apprved as satisfying ne r mre f these Fundatinal Learning Outcmes, then thse Fundatinal Learning Outcmes need nt be satisfied again within in the IE General Educatin Prgram. 2
