Situatd in a stunning watrfront stting, and part of Livrpool s World Hritag Sit, it faturs award-winning attractions including th Batls Story, Tat Livrpool, th Mrsysid Maritim Musum and th Yllow Duckmarin. Th Dock provids an inspiring vnu for a school trip its history and cultural attractions offr an xcllnt backdrop to all aras of ducational larning, and many of its attractions ti in to ky stags of th National Curriculum. 4 IN THE BEGINNING King John grantd Livrpool borough status in 1207, but it was not until th Industrial Rvolution 500 yars latr and th opning up of Amrica that Livrpool s gographical position cam into its own. Built on th stuary of th Rivr Mrsy, Livrpool was a natural harbour, looking outward to th Nw World and inland to som of th richst coalfilds and iron or mins in th country. THE BUILDING OF LIVERPOOL S DOCKS Th Corporation of Livrpool bgan building th world s first commrcial wt dock, Canning Dock, in 1710 by th nd of th 18th cntury Livrpool had a complt dock systm, which includd Salthous Dock and Duk s Dock. Othr ports had built just singl docks, so wr no comptition for th Port of Livrpool. Th mrchants of Livrpool grw walthy, with much of thir walth bing mad from th slav trad s Atlantic triangl. But vn aftr th slav trad was abolishd in 1807 Livrpool continud to prospr. Immns warhouss wr built to stor th cargos of Grat Britain s maritim mpir. By 1800 mor than 4,000 ships brthd in Livrpool and traffic incrasd with th addition of India, China and South Amrica to Livrpool s ntwork of trading links. Goods such as cotton, wool, spirits, tobacco, grain, ta, sugar, mat, and mtals all passd through th Port of Livrpool, contributing to a frnzy of activity at th Docks and in th city. 5 THE HISTORY OF THE ALBERT DOCK Port trad continud to grow and by 1825 th tonnag into Livrpool was 1.2 million pr yar. Goods arriving in Livrpool by ship wr unloadd by dock workrs straight onto th quaysid by hand and thn stord in narby shds until thy could b loadd onto hors-drawn carts. Thy wr thn transportd to privatly-ownd warhouss whr thy had to b unloadd for a scond tim. All this was tim consuming and costly, and goods wr at risk of bing pilfrd. As arly as 1803 Livrpool Corporation had considrd th possibility of an nclosd dock systm, whr warhouss lind th four sids of an nclosd dock so that goods could b offloadd dirctly from th ships into th warhouss, rducing th risk of damag and thft. Howvr th ida was rjctd, mainly bcaus of th vast sums invstd by local businssmn in privat warhouss. Evn whn, tn yars latr, th Royal Commission visitd Livrpool and rcommndd th rction of a continuous chain of warhouss, th ida was still rjctd. It was not until London had succssfully built an nclosd dock warhous systm at St Kathrin s Dock dsignd by Thomas Tlford and Philip Hardwick and compltd in 1829 that Jss Hartly bgan work on plans for an nclosd dock in Livrpool. H was a bridg buildr, traind as a mason, and bcam th world s first profssional dock nginr. In 1824 h was appointd Civil Enginr and Suprintndnt of th Livrpool dock stat and in 1839 h submittd his plans. Hartly consultd Philip Hardwick, so thr ar som similaritis with St Kathrin s Dock vntually his proposals wr accptd and work bgan in 1843 on what bcam known as Albrt Dock. 6 THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE ALBERT DOCK Albrt Dock strtchs ovr svn acrs, and is surroundd with firproof warhouss fiv storys high. It cost 722,000 to build, 358,000 of which was spnt on th warhouss. Th Princ Consort, Princ Albrt, opnd Albrt Dock in In his opning spch h said, I hav hard of th gratnss of Livrpool, but th rality far surpasss my xpctation. Hartly raisd th standard of dsign on th dock stat, although not vryon at th tim considrd th Albrt Dock to b attractiv: som vn thought it ugly. Livrpool historian Sir Jams Picton dscribd it as th prsnt incarnation of uglinss. But today th mrits of Hartly s uncompromising architctur can b admird and apprciatd. Albrt Dock was th first nclosd non-combustibl dock warhous systm to b built ntirly of cast iron, brick and granit. Th vry first hydraulic warhous hoists wr installd in Th warhouss ncircl a (narly squar) dock. At th north-wst cornr and on th middl of th ast sid thr is a gap for watr passags to allow vssls to ntr and lav th dock. Vssls would brth along th quaysids and unload dirctly into th warhouss by mans of hydraulic crans and hoists. Th rd brick fac of th buildings ris dirctly from th ston dock wall, but at ground lvl thr is a vast colonnad of massiv cast iron Doric columns in th Grk styl, but squattr. Each masurs 3.8 mtrs in circumfrnc and 4.5 mtrs high. Ths columns, which hav no bass, support th iron lintls upon which th brick building is rctd. At intrvals th columns ar mor widly spacd; abov thm strtch gracful brick archways. This allowd spac for crans to swing ovr th quaysid. Th plain brickwork of th warhouss is brokn up by th prsnc of cast-iron windows, ach hadd with a shallow sgmntal arch. Th roof is covrd with larg iron slats, boltd togthr. Granit walls rais th ground abov th bd of th Rivr Mrsy, sufficint to clar th maximum tidal variation of som tn mtrs. 7 Hartly Bridg (blow) was dsignd by Jss Hartly and built in It is a swing bridg ovr th passag conncting Albrt Dock to Canning Half Tid Dock. It spans a gap of 13.6 mtrs. Bnath it is th lock gat usd to control th watr lvls in th docks. Th larg thr-story hous to th right of th bridg is th Pir Mastr s Hous. It was ncssary for th Pir Mastr to liv clos to his work in ordr to oprat th rivr gats whn th tid was high, so h would liv thr with his family. Th building givs an insight into domstic lif in Victorian tims, and is now part of th Mrsysid Maritim Musum. Th smallr buildings to th lft of th Pir Mastr s Hous ar th offic of th Pir Mastr and th cooprag, whr woodn barrls wr rpaird. Thr wr originally four Pir Mastr s Houss but during World War Two, thr wr damagd in th May 1941 air raids, which targtd th shipyards along th Rivr Mrsy. 8 Th Dock Traffic Offic was built in 1846 by Philip Hardwick of St Kathrin s Dock fam and addd to by Jss Hartly in Its façad consists of a Tuscan-styl portico mad from cast iron. Th columns ar 5.4 mtrs high and with a diamtr of 0.9 mtrs at th bas. It was built to ovrs all th traffic and administrativ work in Albrt Dock. By 1880 Livrpool had a population of ovr 500,000 and was grantd city status by Qun Victoria. Albrt Dock was a grat succss, spcialising in Far East trad, rsulting in xtnsions to th south stack btwn 1853 and But this succss was not to last. Dsign in ocan going stamrs was changing and th ntranc to th Dock was too small for ths nw normous stamships to ntr. Rbuilding was not possibl bcaus of th warhouss and in 1899 th north stack was convrtd into a cold stor. For th nxt half cntury th warhouss still mad a profit by storing bondd tobacco, wins and spirits. 9 THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ALBERT DOCK Following its closur in 1972, th Albrt Dock found itslf undr thrat of dmolition. Thr had bn a succssion of r-dvlopmnt proposals but ths had all faild. In 1983 Mrsysid Dvlopmnt Corporation, in partnrship with th Arrowcroft Group, invstd ovr 77 million on an ambitious programm to convrt Albrt Dock into a major tourist attraction, with spac for shops, offics and apartmnts. Th MDC rstord th docks, locks and bridgs and bgan to rstor and rpair th warhouss, it installd srvics, landscapd th sit and rstord and rpavd th walkways. Btwn 1983 and 1984 th Mrsysid Maritim Musum movd into th north stack. In 1981 th Tat Gallry in London chos th Albrt Dock for its first rgional outpost and in th yars th Tat Gallry movd into th north nd of th wst stack. In 1984 Granada Studios took ovr th Dock Traffic Offic whn thy movd out ovr 20 yars latr it was takn ovr by th Mrsysid Maritim Musum. In May 1990 th Batls Story movd into Albrt Dock.
