Spcial Vowl Sounds ar actually diphthongs, or vowl blnds. Th sounds of th two vowls ar blndd into a nw sound. This is th first tim studnts will hav sn th consonant w usd as a vowl. It acts as a vowl sound in th combinations aw and ow. Spcial Vowl Sounds AU and AW Th vowl combinations au and aw form th first st of Spcial Vowl Sounds. Th vowl mark, x, is placd undrnath and btwn th two lttrs, sinc thy ar both vowls, and an arc joins thm togthr. Both spllings hav th sam sound, /aw/. Th combination ow changs back and forth btwn saying /ow/, as in now, and /ow/, as in snow. Whn ow says /ow/, as in snow, continu to mark it as a Spcial Vowl Sound, but plac a long vowl mark ovr th o (ow). In words such as bow and row, contxt must b usd to dtrmin th propr sound. Spcial Vowl Sound ou maks a multitud of sounds. It is our most variabl splling. It will only confus studnts to show thm all th variations at onc. 0u, pronouncd /ow/ as in now, is th most-frqunt usag and is, thrfor, taught first. Svral words using th variations of ou ar taught as Most Common Words. A listing of th multipl sounds of ou and xampls of th words associatd with thos sounds is listd blow. Ou can hav th sound of doubl o, /oo/, as in look. It is hard in words such as could, should, and would. Ou can hav th sound of short u, as in tough, rough, touch, and nough. Ou can hav th sound of long o, as in court, fourth, pour, soul, and shouldr. Ou can hav th sound of doubl o, /oo/, as in zoo. This is th normal pronunciation of ou in Frnch, and many of ths words ar borrowd from that languag, such as troup, you, youth, soup, group, through, souvnir, routin, coupon, and cougar. Not: Th combination -ough rprsnts so many diffrnt sounds that th studnt should not attmpt to larn anything spcific about th sound combination. By sounding th consonants prcding -ough accuratly, th contxt will most oftn suggst th appropriat vowl sound. Exampls: brought, although, rough, and slough (ow), tc. To form th scond Spcial Vowl Sound, simply chang th a in au and aw to o. Th scond Spcial Vowl Sound is ou and ow.
