2 Portsmouth Public Schools Summer School Programs Elementary School 8:15 A.M. 1:00 P.M. The elementary summer school program will be held at Churchland Academy Elementary School. The program will begin on Monday, June 29, and end on Thursday, July 30,. Elementary students are enrolled in classes designed to reinforce and strengthen essential Reading and Mathematics skills. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services will provide a free breakfast to all students attending the elementary program. Students are recommended for summer school by their teachers. The student s summer school schedule is mailed to the student s home along with their final report card. Middle School 7:30 A.M. 12:10 P.M. The middle school program this summer will be held at I. C. Norcom High School. The program will begin on Monday, June 29, and end on Thursday, July 30,. Repeat subjects in the core curriculum areas will be offered for students who did not complete one or two subjects during the school year. In addition, classes will be offered in the areas of reading and mathematics for students who need to strengthen their skills. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services will be providing a free breakfast to all students attending the middle school summer program. Algebra Readiness Academy Algebra Readiness Academy is a summer enrichment program offered at I. C. Norcom High School for rising seventh and eighth grade students. Its purpose is to provide students with an opportunity to strengthen their skills in math for success in Algebra I. The current mathematics teacher recommends students for participation in this program. The academy is scheduled in two 3-week sessions. Students attend only one session. Students successfully completing the program will receive a certificate of achievement. Their progress in Algebra I is monitored during the school year. Students are recommended for summer school by their teachers and counselors. The guidance department personnel will register students for summer school and mail the student s summer schedule along with their final report card. High School 7:15 A.M. 12:20 P.M. High school summer classes will be held at I. C. Norcom High School. Classes will begin on Monday, June 29, and end on Thursday, August 13,. The graduation ceremony will be held on August 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Woodrow Wilson High School. New and repeat classes will be offered in the high school program. Selected new subjects are offered on a tuition basis, and certain repeat subjects are offered to residents of Portsmouth at no cost. Select new courses will continue to be taught this summer using an on-line instructional delivery. The students will attend class for a portion of the instructional time, and may be permitted to work from home for a portion of the time. Early registration for high school summer classes will be conducted in the high schools from May An additional day of registration will be held on Wednesday, June 24 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at I. C. Norcom High School. Project Graduation The Project Graduation tutorial program will be offered this summer at I. C. Norcom High School. This is a two-week intensive refresher program for students who need to retake high school level SOL end-of-course tests. The students will attend for two weeks prior to the administration of the end-of-course tests in summer school. Teachers for each subject area are selected to work with these students on the tested content areas as well as test-taking strategies.
3 Additional Summer School Programs Foreign Language Camp for Current Gifted Students Grades K-6 Communication, Connections and Cultures will be a summer opportunity for foreign language exploration using communication and connections incorporating discovery and drama. This is a fourweek program. The camp is designed to introduce and explore the concept of culture and connections utilizing basic functional vocabulary. Students will share their language experiences in culminating projects that will include art, music, technology and the humanities. The culminating event, which is always a highlight of the summer camp, will be presented before an authentic audience of family, friends and peers. Two Sections Section I GRADES K-2 Camp Experience This section is an auditory and visual experience for the younger child. Students will experience language through the channels of music, movement, art and technology. Section II GRADES 3-6 Camp Experience This section is designed geared for the older students and features a signature piece which will be the presentation of an original play written, produced and presented by the students themselves in the target language. Daily activities and experiences will include critical and creative thinking, team building, affective education and of course new and unique oral, aural and visual experiences in the target language. Summer Elementary Art and Physical Education Enrichment This summer the district is offering a pairing of elementary art and elementary physical education classes. Students in grades K-2 can attend art class from 8:40 until 10:50 and then participate in the activity class from 10:50 until 1:00. The 3 rd through 6 th grade students will participate in physical education from 8:40 until 10:50 and then work with the art teacher from 10:50 until 1:00. The summer art classes will explore the lives and works of famous artists through hands on experiences. Small class sizes and longer periods will allow greater opportunity for in-depth exploration of art appreciation and mixed media. Students participating in summer physical education classes will learn movement and creative movement skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities. Pedometers will be used by students to measure their quantity of physical activity and as a tool for supporting math skills. The district is offering two, two week sessions, during the summer. Art and physical education classes are FREE to those that register on a first come first serve basis. Elementary Summer Music Enrichment Daily class instruction will be given in Steel Pans, Recorder, Chorus, Violin, and Piano Keyboarding Performance. Music enrichment class will be available for students in grades one through six. No previous music raining required! Students selected on a first come, first served basis! Registration will be held at Churchland Academy Elementary School June 24, from 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 noon. There is no cost for this program. PROGRAM DATES Start: June 29, ; End: July 24, (Recital date 11:00 a.m.) TIME 8:40 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
4 Middle School Summer Art Offering A middle school Summer Art Academy will be offered at Norcom High School for two, two-week sessions. Breakfast is offered at 7:30. The class will meet daily from 7:50 until 12:10. Each class is limited to 20 students. This program will combine drawing skills with basic experiences in airbrush painting. Students will explore the adaptation of their drawings to the air brush process and will become familiar with the techniques and materials necessary for a successful air brush experience. Students will also become familiar with the commercial applications of airbrush and its use in fine art and illustration. The district is offering Session 1 from June 29- July 9 and Session 2 from July 13 July 23. Registration is at Norcom on June 24, from 9-2. The classes are free to PPS middle school students who are currently in grades 7 and 8. Triple A Institute Triple A Institute is a two-week summer enrichment opportunity. The focus of this institute is: Academics, Achievement, and the Arts. The purpose of the institute is to prepare students for participation in the governor School and to strengthen student portfolios. This program will follow the regular summer school schedule (4 hours of instruction). Students will experience three different disciplines daily; and receive 70 minutes of instruction in each discipline. Forty minutes of the daily schedule will be devoted to class changes and a break. The Triple A Institute is open to all rising 6 th, 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th grade students on a first come/first selected basis. Disciplines to be addressed during the two week session: o Week 1: Dance, Music, Theater o Week 2: Visual Arts, Foreign Languages, Portfolio Development (to include public speaking and interviewing skills) o A follow-up school division sponsored community service activity will be completed before the end of the summer Program Location: I.C. 5 SCIENCE Summer Camps Name of Camp Camp description Location Dates LEGO WEDO Grade 3 (rising 4 th grade) - LEGO WeDo Robotics Camp is an introduction to robot design and programming. Campers will build and program "robotic critters" capable of performing simple tasks. Campers will be encouraged to imagine, explore, and investigate basic machine principles through the development and reinforcement of integrated problem solving, communication skills, teamwork and collaboration. SPACEBASE Atlas (Rising 5 th grade) - The SPACEBASE-Atlas summer curriculum and activities demonstrate for students how math, science, and technology skills are put to use in geo-referencing to map Old Towne Portsmouth and to create a tourism brochure. ENVIROBASE Aquarius (Rising 6 th grade) - The ENVIROBASE- Aquarius summer curriculum and activities demonstrate for students how math, science, technology, and visual art skills are put to use in experimental design, collecting weather data, and environmental stewardship. AEROBASE Atlantis (Rising 7 th grade) - The AEROBASE- Atlantis summer curriculum and activities demonstrate for students how math, science, and technology skills are put to use in experimental design, rocketry, and the physics of flight. DISCOVERYBASE Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) (Rising 8 th and 9 th graders)- The Crime Scene (CSI) Investigation camp will demonstrate for students how forensic scientists process a crime scene. DNA fingerprinting, cast impressions, handwriting, soil, and water analysis crime scene skills will be explored. DISCOVERYBASE Maker Camp (Rising 9 th grade) The PPS Maker Camp gives students the opportunity to function as modern-day inventors and engineers within a faux digital media corporation in which they use critical thinking, engineering, and problem solving skills to address local and global issues through a real-life product development process. Over the course of twelve days, students receive instruction in introductory 3D CAD design software, Android app design, engineering design methods, brainstorming, business collaboration, and prototyping. The camp concludes with the students giving a professional design presentation to an audience consisting of their parents and community leaders. Hampton Roads STEM Summer Academy (Rising 7 th and 8 th grades) Portsmouth Public Schools is participating in a science, technology, engineering, & mathematics (STEM) summer program for rising eighth grade middle school students. This year, a one-week summer academy will be held for PPS students at. There is no cost to the students. This summer academy is sponsored by the National Defense Education Program (NDEP) in collaboration with Norfolk Naval Shipyard, SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic, and Portsmouth Public Schools. Students participating in the summer academy will be grouped in teams that will work together to solve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) challenges. Students may engage in challenges related to engineering, robotics, ballistics, rocketry, electronics, biology and chemistry, and environmental science. 6 Name of Camp Camp description Location Dates RIVERQUEST (Rising 9 th grade) (n=36) RiverQuest is a four-day residential summer camp experience that will enable students to explore college and careers in Environmental Science, Oceanography, Maritime Industry and more. RiverQuest participants will spend the week exploring the environment in and around the Portsmouth area, including working with scientists from ODU s Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) aboard the RV Riptide, participating in a Build-a-Buoy challenge, and canoeing the area surrounding ODU. Throughout the week, participants will be recording their experiences in order to create a book about their local environment. ODU and the Elizabeth River Camp #1: July 6-9, Camp #2: July 13-16, Camp #3: July 20-23, SPEED Academy Scholars Pursuing Excellence through Engineering Design (Rising 11 th & 12 th ) (n=8) Students will learn about design elements (e.g. mechanical engineering, visual design, civil engineering) in the context of remote control (RC) car racing. Students will construct a racing track at Elementary School, design and build (RC) cars capable of speeds of up to 60mph, and develop marketing materials to support the racing team as they enter competitions. Students will receive assistance in learning how to leverage SPEED activities to enhance applications (e.g. college, scholarships, business resumes, etc.). Sea Glide (secondary teachers, n=6, and high school students, n= 12) The program goals are to develop teachers who actively promote citizen science initiatives; develop instruction of a STEM curriculum; and actively participate within a science study. The platform of engagement for this activity will center upon the Sea Glide, an underwater, non-tethered, autonomous robot. Old Dominion Research Laboratories; ; Children s Museum of VA June 29-July 2, June 22-25, + July 20-23, + July 27-30, (12 day camp for teachers; 8 day camp for students) Green Ships and Ports (high school students, n=15) This camp will emphasize the creation of info graphics based on green ports and ship in order to familiarize individuals with and promote STEM-related careers. A team of individuals from several fields, including educators and field experts, will create an educational game that models applications and equipment used in environmentally friendly, self-sustainable ports and ships. Students will experience realistic visuals and storyline in the educational game and leave with a working knowledge of green port and green ship related careers and equipment. Norfolk State University Cyber Security Summer Academy (high school students, n=25) In this one week camp students will be introduced to information assurance and cyber security. They will explore computer forensics where they will explore techniques universally used to fight cyber criminals.
