Mngnese btteries my not be used in this recorder. Be sure to stop the recorder before replcing the btteries. Unloding the btteries while the recorder is in use my cuse mlfunction such s corrupting the file, etc

3 2 Insert size-aaa lkline bttery, observing the correct = nd - polrities. 3 Close the bttery cover completely by pressing to the direction A, then sliding to the direction B. Bttery indictor: When [ ] ppers on the disply, replce the btteries s soon s possible. When the btteries re too wek, [s] nd [Bttery Low] ppers on the disply nd the recorder shuts down. Remove the btteries if you re not going to use the recorder for n extended period of time. When chnging btteries, AAA lkline btteries or Olympus Ni-MH rechrgeble btteries re recommended. h Turning on/off the power Turning on the power: While the recorder is turned off, slide the POWER/HOLD switch in the direction indicted by the rrow. The disply will turn on, nd the power will be turned on. Turning off the power: Slide the POWER/HOLD switch in the direction indicted by the rrow for 1 seconds or longer. The disply shuts off, nd the power will be turned off. The resume function remembers the stop position before the power is turned off. Power sve mode If the recorder is stopped/not used for over 5 minutes fter it is turned on, it goes into stndby (power-sve) mode, nd the disply shuts off. To exit stndby mode nd turn on the disply, press ny button. h HOLD C A B Set the recorder to HOLD mode (A): Slide the POWER/HOLD switch to the HOLD position. After [Hold] ppers on the disply, the recorder is set to HOLD mode. Exit HOLD mode (B): Slide the POWER/HOLD switch to the C position. If you press ny button in HOLD mode, the clock disply flshes for 2 seconds, but it will not operte the recorder. If HOLD is pplied during plybck (recording), opertion is disbled with the plybck (recording) stte unchnged (When plybck hs ended nd the recording hs ended due to the remining memory being used up, it will stop). h Setting time nd dte [Time & Dte] If you set the time nd dte beforehnd, the informtion when the file is recorded is utomticlly stored for ech file. Setting the time nd dte beforehnd enbles esier file mngement. When you instll btteries for the first time or ech time you replce the btteries, the Hour indiction will flsh

4 1 Press the 9 or 0 button to select the item to set. Select the item from the hour, minute, yer, month nd dy with flshing point. 2 Press the + or button to set. Follow the sme steps by pressing the 9 or 0 button to select the next item, nd press the + or button to set. You cn select between 12 nd 24 hour disply by pressing the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENE button while setting the hour nd minute. You cn select the order of the month, dy nd yer by pressing the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENE button while setting them. 3 Press the ` OK/MENU button to complete the setting. The clock will strt from the set dte nd time. Press the ` OK/MENU button ccording to the time signl. While the recorder is during stop mode, press nd hold the STOP (4) button to disply the [Time & Dte], nd [Remin]. Chnging the time nd dte Select [Time & Dte] from the menu on the [Device Menu]. (plese see Menu setting P.9, Time & Dte P.14) h Notes on the Folders The recorder provides five folders, [F], [G], [H], [I] nd [W]. To chnge the folder selection, press the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENE button while the recorder is stopped. Folder indictor Ech folder cn store up to 200 files. About recording h Recording Before strting recording, select folder between [&] to [*]. These five folders cn be selectively used to distinguish the kind of recording; for exmple, Folder [&] might be used to store privte informtion, while Folder ['] might be dedicted to holding business informtion. 1 Press the FOLDER/INDEX/ SCENE button to select the desired folder. Folder indictor Newly recorded udio will be sved s the lst file in the selected folder. 2 Press the REC (s) button to strt recording. Turn the microphone in the direction of the source to be recorded. b Recording mode/ c Elpsed recording time/ d Remining recording time [Rec Mode] cnnot be chnged in the recording stndby mode or while recording. Configure this while the recorder is stopped. b c d 3 Press the STOP (4) button to stop recording. e File length e For VN-8100PC only If recording is mde in stereo modes ([192 kbps] or [128 kbps]), it will be monurl recording through the built-in microphone, nd the sme udio will be recorded on both Left chnnel (Lch) nd Right chnnel (Rch)

5 h Puse While the recorder is during recording mode, press the REC (s) button. The recorder will time out fter 60 minutes when left in Rec Puse. Resume Recording: Press the REC (s) button gin. Recording will resume t the point of interruption. h To quickly check on the recorded contents While the recorder is during recording mode, press the ` OK/MENU button. Stop recording nd the file tht ws just recorded will be plyed bck. h Microphone sensitivity Microphone sensitivity is djustble to meet recording needs. Select [Mic Sense] from the menu on the [Rec Menu]. (plese see Menu setting P.9, Mic Sense P.11) h Recording from externl microphone or other devices To MIC jck The externl microphone nd other devices cn be connected nd the sound cn be recorded. Connect s follows by the device to be used. Do not plug nd unplug devices into the recorder s jck while it is recording. Recording with externl microphone: Connect n externl microphone to the MIC jck of the recorder. The built-in microphone will become inoperble when n externl microphone is plugged into the recorder s MIC jck. Microphones supported by plug-in power cn lso be used. When the externl stereo microphone is used while [Rec Mode] is set to monurl recording mode, udio will be recorded to the L chnnel only*. When n externl monurl microphone is used while [Rec Mode] is set to stereo recording mode, it enbles recording only with the L chnnel microphone*. * For VN-8100PC only. To ensure recording from the beginning, strt recording fter you see the disply nd the recording indictor lights on. When remining recording time is less thn 60 seconds, the recording indictor light strts flshing. When the recording time is decresing to 30 or 10 seconds, the light flshes fster. [Folder Full] will pper when the recording cnnot be mde ny further. Select on other folder or delete ny unnecessry files before recording. [Memory Full] will pper when the memory is full. Delete ny unnecessry files before recording ny further. When externl devices re connected, perform test recording nd then djust the output level for the externl devices. When you djust the vrious sound qulity settings relted to plybck on the recorder, the udio output signl sent out from the EAR jck will chnge s well

6 About plybck h Plybck 1 Press the FOLDER/INDEX/ SCENE button to select the desired folder. Folder indictor 2 Press the 9 or 0 button to select the file to plybck. 3 Press the `OK/MENU button to strt plybck. b Elpsed plybck time/ c File length b c 4 Press the + or button to djust to comfortble listening volume. The volume cn be djusted within rnge from [00] to [30]. 5 Press the STOP (4) button t ny point you wnt to stop the plybck. This will stop the file being plyed bck midwy. When the resume function is ctivted the stopped loction will be registered, even if the power is turned off. The next time the power is turned on, plybck my be resumed from the registered stopped loction. h Forwrding nd Rewinding While the recorder is during stop mode, press nd hold the 9 or 0 button. If you relese the button, it will stop. Press the ` OK/MENU button to strt plybck from where it ws stopped. While the recorder is during plybck mode, press nd hold the 9 or 0 button. When you relese the button the recorder will resume norml plybck. If there is n index mrk or temp mrk in the middle of the file, the recorder will stop t tht loction. 9: The recorder stops when it reches the end of the file. Continue pressing the 9 button to proceed with the cue from the beginning of the next file. 0: The recorder stops when it reches the beginning of the file. Continue pressing the 0 button to proceed with the review from the end of the previous file. h Locting the beginning of the file While the recorder is during stop mode or plybck mode, press the 9 button. The recorder skips to the beginning of the next file. While the recorder is during plybck mode, press the 0 button. The recorder skips to the beginning of the current file. While the recorder is during stop mode, press the 0 button. The recorder skips to the beginning of the previous file. If the recorder stop the midwy of the file, return to the beginning of the file. While the recorder is during plybck mode, press the 0 button twice. The recorder skips to the beginning of the previous file. When you skip to the beginning of the file during plybck, the recorder will strt plybck t the position of n index mrk or temp mrk. The index mrk nd temp mrk will be skipped when you perform the opertion in stop mode. When [Skip Spce] set to other thn [File Skip], the recorder will skip forwrd/reverse the specified time, then will strt plybck

7 h Chnging ply speed The plybck speed of the file cn be chnged between 0.5 nd 2 times speed. Chnge the speed ccording to need such s listening to meeting content t fst speed or reviewing spots tht you couldn't ctch in lnguge lesson t slow speed. 1 Press the `OK/MENU button to strt plybck. 2 While the recorder is during plybck mode, press the `OK/MENU button to open the plybck speed djustment disply. 3 3 Press the + or button to djust the plybck speed. [x1.0 Ply] (Norml plybck) Plybck t norml speed. [x0.5 Ply] [x0.9 Ply] (Slow plybck) Plybck speed slows down. [x1.1 Ply] [x2.0 Ply] (Fst plybck) Plybck speed becomes fster. 4 Press the `OK/MENU button to complete the setting. If you leve the recorder for 3 seconds, the setting will be pplied nd the recorder will return bck to the originl screen. Even if plybck is stopped, the chnged plybck speed will be retined. The next plybck will be t tht speed. As in norml plybck mode, you cn stop plybck, cue file, or insert n index mrk in slow plybck nd fst plybck modes s well. h Plybck through erphone To EAR jck An erphone cn be connected to the EAR jck of the recorder for listening. When the erphone is used, the recorder speker will be switched-off. To void irrittion to the er, insert the erphone fter turning down the volume level. When you listen with the erphone during plybck, do not rise the volume too much. It my cuse hering impirment nd decrese in hering bility. h Setting n index mrk or temp mrk If index mrks nd temp mrks re plced, you cn quickly find loction you wnt to listen to in fst forwrd nd fst rewind nd when cuing file. Index mrks cnnot be plced on files creted on mchines other thn this recorder, but temp mrks cn be plced insted to temporrily remember desired loctions. Temp mrks re temporry mrkings. They will be utomticlly ersed if you move to nother file or connect the recorder to computer. Clering n index mrk or temp mrk: 1 While the recorder is during recording mode or plybck mode, press the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENE button. Even fter n index or temp mrk is plced, recording or plybck will continue so you cn plce index or temp mrks in other loctions in similr mnner. 1 Locte the index or temp mrk you wnt to cler

8 2 Press the 9 or 0 button to select the index or temp mrk to erse. 3 While the index or temp number ppers for pproximtely 2 seconds on the disply, press the ERASE button. The index or temp mrk is ersed. Index or temp numbers fter the ersed index or temp number will utomticlly move up. Up to 16 index nd temp mrks cn be set in file. If you try to plce more thn 16 index or temp mrks, [Index Full] messge will pper for index mrks, nd [Temp Mrk Full] for temp mrks. Index or temp mrks cnnot be set or ersed in locked file. h How to begin segment repet plybck This function enbles repeted plybck of prt of the file being plyed. 1 Press the `OK/MENU button to strt plybck. 2 Press the REC (s) button t the point you wnt to strt segment repet plybck. Fst forwrding nd rewinding cn be conducted when [w] is flshing in the sme mnner s during norml plybck, nd you cn quickly proceed s fr s the end position. When it reches to the end of the file while [w] is flshing, the point will become the end position, nd repet plybck will strt. 3 Press the REC (s) button gin t the position where you wnt to end segment repet plybck. The recorder repetedly plys bck the segment until the segment repet plybck is cncelled. As in norml plybck mode, plybck speed cn be chnged during segment repet plybck s well. If n index mrk nd temp mrk re inserted or eliminted during segment repet plybck, segment repet plybck will be cnceled nd it will return to norml plybck mode. Cncel the segment repet plybck function: Pressing ny of the following buttons will relese the segment repet plybck. Press the STOP (4) button b Press the REC (s ) button c Press the 9 button d Press the 0 button h Ersing A selected file cn be ersed from folder. Also, ll files in folder cn be ersed simultneously. 1 Select the folder or file you wnt to erse

9 2 While the recorder is during stop mode, press the ERASE button. 3 3 Press the + or button to select [Erse in Folder] or [File Erse]. 4 Press the ` OK/MENU button. 5 Press the + button to select [Strt]. 6 Press the ` OK/MENU button. The disply chnges to [Erse!] nd ersing will strt. [Erse Done] is displyed when the file is ersed. File numbers will be ressigned utomticlly. The locked files nd files set s red-only cnnot be ersed. If n ction is not selected within 8 seconds, the recorder will return to stop sttus. It my tke over 10 seconds to complete processing. Never remove btteries during this time becuse dt my be corrupted. In ddition, replce the btteries with new ones in order to ensure tht the btteries will not run out while processing. You cnnot delete folders through the recorder. Menu setting h Menu setting method Items in menus re ctegorized so tht you cn quickly set desired item. You cn set ech menu item s follows. 1 While the recorder is during stop mode, plybck mode or recording mode, press the ` OK/MENU button for 1second or longer. 2 Press the + or button to move to the item you wnt to set. 3 Press the ` OK/MENU or 9 button to move the cursor to the item to set. 4 Press the + or button to move to the item you wnt to set

10 5 Press the `OK/MENU or 9 button. Moves to the setting of the selected item. 6 Press the + or button to chnge the setting. 7 Press the `OK/MENU button to complete the setting. You will be informed tht the settings hve been estblished vi the screen. Pressing the 0 button without pressing the `OK/MENU button will cncel the settings nd return you to the previous screen. 8 Press the STOP (4) button to close the menu screen. If you enter the menu during recording or plybck nd press the 0 button, it will llow you to return bck to the previous screen without interrupting recording or plybck. The recorder will stop if you leve it idle for 3 minutes during menu setup opertion, when selected item is not pplied. When entering menu settings during recording or plybck, the menu settings will be cncelled if 8 seconds elpse with no buttons being pressed. h File Menu Erse Lock Locking file keeps importnt dt from being ccidentlly ersed. Locked files re not ersed when you select to erse ll files from folder. 1 Select [Erse Lock] from the menu on the [File Menu]. [On]: Locks the file nd prevents it from being ersed. [Off]: Unlocks the file nd llows it to be ersed. File lock indictor File Divide (For VN-8100PC only) Files with lrge cpcities nd long recording times cn be split so tht they re esier to mnge nd edit. 1 Select the file you wnt to divide. 2 Strt Plybck or fst-forwrd the file, nd stop the plybck t divide position. 3 Select [File Divide] from the menu on the [File Menu]. 4 Press the + button to select [Strt], nd then press the `OK/MENU button. [Dividing!] will be displyed nd file splitting will strt. Splitting is completed when [File divide completed] is displyed. Only MP3 file recorded on this recorder cn be divided. The recorder cnnot divide files when the number of files in the folder exceeds 198. Locked files cnnot be divided. After splitting the file, the front prt of the file will be renmed s [File nme_1.mp3] nd the ltter prt of the file will be nmed s [File nme_2.mp3]. If file hs n extremely short recording time, it my not be divide even if it is MP3 file. Do not remove the bttery during dividing file. This my dmge the dt. Property Select the files for which you would like to confirm informtion in dvnce before operting the menu. 1 Select [Property] from the menu on the [File Menu]. [Nme] (File nme), [Dte] (Time stmp), [Size] (File size), [Bit Rte] (File formt) will pper on the disply. -10-

11 h Rec Menu Mic Sense Microphone sensitivity (Built-in or externl microphone) is djustble to meet recording needs. 1 Select [Mic Sense] from the menu on the [Rec Menu]. [High]: High recording sensitivity suitble for conferences with mny prticipnts nd recording udio t distnce or low volume. [Low]: Stndrd recording sensitivity suitble for dicttion. Microphone sensitivity indictor When you would like to clerly record speker s voice, set [Mic Sense] to [Low] nd hold recorder s built-in microphone close to the speker s mouth (5-10 cm). If the [Rec Scene] is set to setting other thn [Off], the [Mic Sense] function will not be vilble. Set [Rec Scene] to [Off] to use this function. Rec Mode Besides stereo* nd monurl recording, you cn lso select recording with priority to sound qulity, nd recording with priority to recording time. Select the recording mode pproprite to your needs. * For VN-8100PC only. 1 Select [Rec Mode] from the menu on the [Rec Menu]. When [MP3]* (Stereo/Monurl) is selected: [192 kbps] (Stereo), [128 kbps] (Stereo), [48 kbps] (Monurl) When [WMA] (Monurl) is selected: [HQ] (high qulity sound recording), [SP] (stndrd recording), [LP] (long-term recording) * For VN-8100PC only. Recording mode indictor To ensure recording from the beginning, strt recording fter you see the disply nd the recording indictor light on. To record meeting nd lecture clerly, set other thn [LP] in [Rec Mode]. When the externl monurl microphone is used while [Rec Mode] is set to stereo recording mode, it enbles recording only with the L chnnel microphone (For VN-8100PC only). If the [Rec Scene] is set to setting other thn [Off], the [Rec Mode] function will not be vilble. Set [Rec Scene] to [Off] to use this function. Low Cut Filter The recorder hs Low Cut Filter function to minimize low-frequency sounds nd record voices more clerly. This function cn reduce noise from ir conditioners, projectors nd other similr noises. 1 Select [Low Cut Filter] from the menu on the [Rec Menu]. [On]: Enbles the Low Cut Filter function. [Off]: Disbles this function. Low Cut Filter indictor If the [Rec Scene] is set to setting other thn [Off], the [Low Cut Filter] function will not be vilble. Set [Rec Scene] to [Off] to use this function. VCVA When the microphone senses tht sounds hve reched preset threshold volume level, the built-in Vrible Control Voice Actutor (VCVA) strts recording utomticlly, nd stops when the volume drops below the threshold level. The VCVA feture extends recording time nd conserves memory by stopping recording during silent periods, which helps the plybck to be more efficient. 1 Select [VCVA] from the menu on the [Rec Menu]. [On]: Enbles the VCVA function. [Off]: Disbles this function. Will resume recording in norml mode. VCVA indictor Adjust the strt/stop ctution level: If the surrounding noise is loud, the strting sensitivity of the VCVA cn be djusted ccording to the recording sitution. 1 Press the REC (s) button to strt recording. When the sound volume is lower thn the preset threshold sound level, recording utomticlly stops fter 1 sec pproximtely, nd [Stndby] flshes on the disply. The recording indictor light glows when recording strts nd flshes when recording puses

12 2 Press the 9 or 0 button djust the strt/stop ctution level. The VCVA level cn be set to ny of 15 different vlues. The higher the vlue, the more sensitive the recorder to sounds. At the highest vlue, even the fintest sound will ctivte recording. The strt/stop ctution level lso vries depending on the selected microphone sensitivity mode. If the strting level is not djusted within 2 seconds, the disply will return to the previous. To ensure successful recordings, prior testing nd djustment of the strt/stop ctution level is recommended. If the [Rec Scene] is set to setting other thn [Off], the [VCVA] function will not be vilble. Set [Rec Scene] to [Off] to use this function. Rec Scene The recording setting cn be selected from the [Memo], [Meeting], [Conference] templtes to suit the recording scene or sitution. You cn lso sve recording setting of your choice. 1 Select [Rec Scene] from the menu on the [Rec Menu]. 2 Press the + or button to select the item to set, nd then press the `OK/MENU or 9 button. When [Scene Select] is selected: Press the + or button to select the recording scene you wnt to set, nd then press `OK/MENU button. [Off]: Disbles this function. [Memo]: Suitble for dicttion. [Meeting]: Suitble for recording meetings. [Conference]: Suitble for seminrs with smll number of people. [User Setting]: Recording with menu settings sved using [Scene Sve]. Rec Scene indictor When [Scene Sve] is selected: Press `OK/MENU button. You cn sve the current [Rec Menu] menu settings in [User Setting]. To chnge the [Rec Scene], return the screen to [Scene Select] by pressing nd holding the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENE button for 1 second or longer while the recorder is during stop mode. If the [Rec Scene] is set to setting other thn [Off], the menu settings for the recording functions will not be vilble.set the [Rec Scene] to [Off] to use these functions. h Ply Menu Voice Filter (For VN-8100PC only) The recorder hs Voice Filter Function to cut low nd high frequency tones during norml, fst, or slow plybck, nd enble cler udio plybck. 1 Select [Voice Filter] from the menu on the [Ply Menu].
