The paper is an integral part of the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Exercise Science and of interest to many other students. Students will have at the end of the paper a sufficient knowledge base to continue with paper Human Bioscience : Impaired Body Function which introduces the student to pathophysiology. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion a student will be able to: 1. Understand the relationship between cells, tissue, organs and systems 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the concept of homeostasis and its role in normal body function 3. Understand the concept of metabolism in relation to normal body function 4. Understand the impact of development on sexual maturation 5. Understand the impact of the aging process on the body systems and the ability to maintain homeostasis Assessment: 1. A one and a half hour test to test the learning outcomes/ study material to date. This test prepares the student for the final exam since a similar format will be used. The test is worth 25% of the final mark. 2. Complete FIVE learning exercises/quizzes on WebCT. Each exercise/quiz consists of 20 questions covering lecture and laboratory study material. Each exercise/quiz will be marked and counts 5% towards your final mark. These exercise/quizzes are worth 25% towards the final mark. 3. A three hour final exam covering all learning outcomes. This exam is worth 50% of the final mark. A minimum of 40% pass in the final exam has to be achieved. 1
2 The exam is a compulsory assessment for passing this paper. The overall grade for this paper is based on the internal assessment (50% towards the final grade) and the exam (50% towards the final grade and a minimum of 40% pass in the final exam has to be achieved). In order to pass this paper students will need to achieve a minimum final exam mark of 40%. If students do not achieve at least 40% of the final exam mark, then the student will fail the paper, even if the student has achieved 50% or more over the whole paper. Applications for deadline extensions must be received prior to the deadlines for each assessment. Requirements to Successfully Complete the Paper: To pass the paper, you need a C grade or above, or AEG. An R grade is a restricted pass. This means that if the paper for which you have an R grade is a prerequisite for another paper, you will not be allowed to enrol in that paper. You MUST get at least a C grade for the paper you passed before you can progress. A restricted pass will give you credit towards your qualification if it is not a prerequisite paper. If you receive an R grade contact the person in charge of your programme to discuss how an R grade may affect your progression through you degree. Learning Programme and Schedule: Each week students are offered 3 one hour lectures covering the theory of the course and a one two hour lab or tutorial with discussion and or practical work or lab component to enhance learning. In addition to this, there will be a fortnightly one hour tutorial made available to students in order to provide study skills, revision and exam techniques. The lectures, laboratories and tutorials will be covered by Jim Clarke, Isabelle Hoong and Wilma Tielemans. Student Time Budget: This is a 15 credit paper for a single semester and will include 5 hours a week of class contact time for 12 weeks. Non scheduled learning is 10 hours per week during 12 weeks which includes preparation for the test, assignment and final exam. 3 Tutorials: In week 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12: 3-4 pm OR 4-5 pm Room 7D05 Wellington Nursing degree students All other students: to be announced Laboratories: Tuesday 2-4 pm Room 3C33 Tuesday 4-6 pm Room 3C33 Wednesday 2-4 pm Room 3C33 Proposed Feedback and Support for Student Learning: The turnaround time for assignments will be no more than three weeks from the due date. It is important to note that the specified timeframe applies only to those assignments submitted by the due date, and does not necessarily apply to those submitted late. The test will be returned to students for feedback purposes normally during tutorial times to give students the opportunity to discuss problems. In the event of a student not progressing well because of personal or academic problems it is possible to discuss them with either the paper coordinator Isabelle Hoong, Wilma Tielemans or Jim Clarke. Any problems with study can be discussed with the staff involved in this paper. Jim Clarke has a good overview of the papers on offer in the science department and is able to advise students which papers to take in case of a change of direction in study. Students may seek assistance from the Student Learning Centre. There are also fortnightly tutorials organized whereby students get to learn study skills and revise for the final exam and feedback on their learning process. Textbook and Other Recommended Reading: Required Text: Marieb, E.N. & Hoehn, K. (2007). Human Anatomy and Physiology. New York: Pearson Additional Costs: Students have to wear closed shoes in the laboratory. Lecture notes and Lab manual can be obtained from room the Student Notes Distribution Centre at no cost. Conditions for Aegrotat Pass: If you are prevented by illness, injury or serious crisis from attending an examination (or completing an element of assessment by the due date), or if you consider that your performance has been seriously impaired by such circumstances, you may apply for aegrotat or impaired performance consideration. You must apply on the form available from the Examinations Office, the student Health Service or the Student Counselling Service To qualify for an aegrotat pass on the final examination, you must have attempted at least 40% of the total formal assessment and your performance must be well above the minimum pass standard, so that the examiners can be confident that you would have passed the paper if you had completed the final examination. You may also apply for aegrotat consideration for other compulsory assessment elements (such as semester Tests) that occur at a fixed time and place if you are prevented by illness, injury or a serious crisis from attending. Conditions for Impaired Performance: If you consider that your performance in, or preparation for, an examination, or another compulsory assessment element that occurs at a fixed time and place, has been seriously impaired by illness, injury or a serious crisis, you may apply for an impaired performance consideration. You must apply on the form available from the Examinations Office, the Student Health Service or the Student Counselling Service. Plagiarism: 3

Plagiarism will be penalized; it is likely to lead to loss of marks for that item of assessment and may lead to an automatic failing grade for the paper and/or exclusion from reenrollment at the University. Grievance Procedures: A student who claims that he/she has sustained academic disadvantage as a result of the actions of a University staff member should use the University Grievance Procedures. Students, whenever practicable, should in the first instance approach the University staff member concerned. If the grievance is unresolved with the staff member concerned, the student should then contact the College of Sciences office on his/her campus for further information on the procedures, or read the procedures in the University Calendar.
