1 HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II (BIOL. 214) LECTURE SYLLABUS, FALL, 2010 Instructor: Dr. Vonnie D.C. Course Objectives: Biology 214 (Anatomy and Physiology II) is the second of a two-part course about the structure and function of the human body. This course will cover topics, such as fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance, functions and composition of blood, cardiovascular system, blood vessels and circulation, lymphatic system and immunity, endocrine system, respiratory system, digestive system, metabolism and energetics, urinary system, and reproductive system. Learning Outcomes The main objectives of this course are to: provide students with a foundation for later study in health care, exercise physiology, and other fields related to health and fitness. demonstrate an understanding of each physiological system and its role in the maintenance of homeostasis. demonstrate competency using laboratory equipment to assess various physiological parameters. interpret results from laboratory experiments. use critical thinking to solve physiological problems. Texts and Software: Lecture: Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Martini, F. H. Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, N.J. Eighth Edition. Laboratory: Anatomy and Physiology I and II Laboratory Manual, Sinclair, C.S., Kendall Hunt Publishing. Software (for laboratory): Anatomy and Physiology Revealed software, McGraw-Hill. This cadaver dissection software is a required purchase for this course. You must have your own copy of the software in order to review the material outside of laboratory or extra study session time. Copies of this software are available in the bookstore or you can gain acquire an online access code by visiting and follow these instructions: 1) Click Sign In/Register at the top of the page 2) Click Register as a student on the right side of the page and follow the instructions. 3) Click Buy Online on the right side of the page. The cost is $35. In this software you will find beautiful cadaver dissection images, animations, selfquizzing and more tools to assist you in this course. Grading: Grading will be based upon scores earned on the four lecture exams, an optional final exam, and three laboratory exams (see lab schedule). At the conclusion of the course, each student s total point accumulation will be determined and converted to a percentage by comparison with the maximum total points possible (660). There is no grade curving.

2 Optional final exam: The final exam is optional. It is a cumulative exam and will cover material from the entire course. Please let me know if you plan to take the optional final. Please note that if you receive a grade on the optional final exam that is lower than that obtained on a previous lecture exam, this will not be counted toward the final course grade. If the grade on the optional final is higher than that obtained on a previous lecture exam, this grade will replace it. You will receive 5 bonus points if you turn them into me, blank, by September 10 th. If you turn your forms in after September 10 th, you will receive no bonus points, but you must still turn them in before you write the first lecture exam. Cheating Policy: Cheating of any kind is unacceptable. Anyone caught cheating will receive a grade of "0" on the exam. In addition, the Office of Academic Affairs will also be notified and a letter documenting the incident will be placed in your permanent academic record (see also "Student Academic Integrity Policy" at Student Conduct: In fairness to everyone enrolled in this course, it is critical that the best possible learning atmosphere be maintained in both the classroom and laboratory. Please enjoy your experience in Human Anatomy and Physiology II and get the most benefit from the course you can. At all times, however, be respectful of the rights and feelings of others. Boisterous or disruptive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. You are not allowed to use your cell phone during the entire period of lecture or lab or during exams. In the event where a student legitimately needs to carry a beeper or cellular telephone to lecture, prior notice and approval of the instructor is required. Absence, Tardiness, and Attendance: Laboratory attendance is mandatory. For every unexcused laboratory absence, you will lose 10 points from your final lab score! Do not arrive late to lecture or lab. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each laboratory period. You are also expected to stay the full duration of each lecture or laboratory period (unless you have a valid excuse). Quizzes: There will be several unannounced quizzes given during lecture and/or lab periods. These quizzes are will be considered as bonus points. Make-up Policy For Missed Lecture Exams: There will be no make-up exams given for lecture exams. Students with a justifiable, documented reason (e.g., medical doctor's note, death notice and funeral card, religious holidays, documented athletic activity) within Towson University policy

3 guidelines will be allowed to write a make-up exam. In the case of observing a religious holiday, you must contact me at the beginning of the semester so that we can arrange for you to make up the missed exam. Make-ups will typically take place the week prior to final exams. Traffic and parking delays are NOT justifiable reasons. Make-ups must be arranged ahead of time with me. You can call, leave a voic message, or me up to 1 p.m. on the day of the exam if you must miss it. Due to the nature of lab practical exams, make-ups will only be given in cases of emergencies, so it is best to NOT miss your lab exam. Lecture note: You are strongly encouraged to attend every lecture class. Students who miss regularly usually fail the course. If you cannot attend lecture regularly, you should drop the course before the end of the add/drop period. Laboratory Note: Food is not permitted in the lab. Mishandling of models is unacceptable. Please handle them with care and return them to their appropriate location at the end of each lab. H1N1 Influenza Policy Statement (TU Office of the Provost): Students should not attend classes or other university events from the onset of flu-like symptoms until at least 24 hours after the fever subsides without the use of fever reducing medications. Such absences will be considered excused absences; however, students are responsible for the material covered during the period of their absence. The student must notify me within 24 hours after missing the exam (telephone, voic , ). Americans with Disabilities Act: If you are a qualified student with a disability seeking accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you are required to self-identify with Disability Student Services in the Administration Building and present a letter to me from Disability Support Services.
