3 Course Description: Human Anatomy and Physiology is intended for Allied Health and Science majors. It encompasses structure and function of selected organs systems and systems of the human body. The focus of this second course is on the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, immune, urinary and reproductive systems. Additionally, the biochemistry of energy production and metabolism are discussed. Remark: This course together with BSC 1085 provides the foundation for an understanding of the human body. Most students taking this course plan a career in health care. To anyone planning to work in the health field this class will be the background to a deeper understanding about yourself and your patients. A patient s life or health may depend on whether you know what you are doing. Additionally, this class will provide the necessary background for other professional courses that rely on anatomy and physiology. Therefore, learn as much as you can in this class. You will benefit from it. Also, I will keep a high standard for this class, considering the above. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. discuss the anatomy and the biochemical and physiological activity of the endocrine system. 2. describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system. 3. discuss the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, digestive, immune, lymphatic, urinary and reproductive systems. 4. explain aspects of human metabolism, nutrition and fluid balance. 5. analyze clinical manifestation of pathological conditions while considering normal anatomy and physiology of the affected organ system. 6. relate the connections between healthy functions of human organ systems in an integrative manner. Pre- and Co-Requirements for this course: College level reading and writing! Successful completion of BSC 1085 and BSC 1085L. Current enrollment in, or completion of BSC 1086L (the laboratory part of this course). Note that lab and lecture complement each other. Computer literacy, which means you must be comfortable working on the internet, watching streaming downloads, using and working in a content management system like WebCT or Blackboard. Required materials: 1. Hardware and software: Computer access and internet connection! A webbrowser (the following versions do definitely work: IE8 and IE9; Firefox 3.6; Safari.) JAVA (careful with updates. Check Blackboard for version compatibility) 2. Mastering A&P. 3. Everyone needs an A&P textbook or access to the electronic textbook. Specifics see below. Then access Mastering A&P. Log into this course (Course ID= MAPGERMROTH15439). Mastering A&P has a great help feature and tutorial. Please make use of it. If you buy the recommended Marieb package you have: FREE access to MasteringA&P (access code is in the textbook) which also includes your access to all online material and software needed for this course. I recommend buying this package at the Dale Mabry bookstore. If you own another recent edition of either Marieb's, SALADIN's or MARTINI's A&P textbook you may just purchase access to Mastering A&P without the etextbook option at a cost of $ 45. You need to do this online! If you own no textbook in print but prefer the cheaper online textbook (ebook) you need to purchase access to Mastering A&P with the e- textbook option at a cost of about $135 You need to do this online! How to work during the term: 1. I will offer recorded power-point lectures on a few selected topics and powerpoint slide shows for all other chapters. I recommend that you listen to them and look at them, respectively. THEY DO NOT REPLACE YOUR STUDYING in the textbook or working with interactive physiology. 5 2. Study and master deep content by completing the studying in the textbook, practice assignments, and Interactive Physiology exercises. Take notes. You will not do well on the tests if you do not use your textbook and / or the practice assignments. 3. Complete the assigned tests and practice assignments ON TIME. (No credit for late work) a. All quizzes will have to be completed and submitted at 11 pm on the deadline date. b. There will be a time limit for each quiz. c. There is one attempt only for each quiz. So make certain you take them at a time when you will NOT be interrupted for 30 minutes. d. All quizzes and practice assignments are on Mastering A&P. e. Podcasts and supplemental material are within MyHCC. f. Do all assigned work at least 24 hours before the announced deadline. Work done the last day close to deadline will not be reassigned if there is a power failure/crash etc. 4. Comment on the podcasts within the discussion area of MyHCC. Feel free to respond also to your co-students remarks. It s a discussion board. It will be open for comments until November 21. Assessments: All assessments are to be taken in Mastering A&P. The comprehensive final exam must be taken on campus. Note: you cannot get a passing grade without taking the final exam. 1. Online tests (10 total). Usually one week for each to take them and between 30 and 60 minutes time for a test (depends on the test). 2. Homework assignments (11 total): First take Introduction to Mastering A&P. It teaches you how the tests and practice assignments work. 10 chapter related practice assignments. No time limits. 3. GetReady: This is usually assigned to A&P I (BSC 1085) students but many of you may not have done this or forgotten it. GetReady provides you with great common sense study advice, time management and test preparation advice etc. Your reward for doing this is 5% of the grade. 4. Your comments and discussion contributions on the podcasts. You will listen to the podcasts via the links in MyHCC and comment on the Blakboard discussion board. 5. A comprehensive final exam, to be taken in the college on the specified date.you will need green Scantron sheets and a #2 pencil for the final exam. 6 Grading: The final total percentage will be calculated from: Multiple choice chapter quizzes = 50% Practice assignments = 20% Get-Ready assignments = 05% Final exam = 25% Sum total = 100 % Podcast comments = extra 3 % Listening to the podcasts and commenting on them will therefore give you a 3% bonus. Note: there will be no extra credit or grade adjustment due to the above and the fact that practice credit and credit for Get-Ready is easily earned. A=90-100% B=80-89%; C=70-79%; D=60-69%; F= less than 60%. Missing the final exam due to the flu or other grave circumstances: If you miss the final exam and can produce documentation attesting to sickness or other extenuating circumstances beyond your personal responsibility an alternate date/time and location will be provided to take the final exam on this campus under supervision. Similarly, if your residence is outside central Florida, we can arrange for a supervised final exam. If I catch you in such a case you will fail the class and additional disciplinary action will be initiated. Plagiarism: Any submission that is not the genuine product of the student submitting it (for example a plagiarized test answer, comment, or paper) will receive a failing grade and potentially a failing grade for the whole course as well as further disciplinary action via the office of the Dean of students. Note: any free answers or paper content must be your thoughts in your words. If you borrow (=closely paraphrase a source), you need a citation. Borrowing in test answers is not permitted. Miscellaneous: There will be no extra bonus work etc. beyond what is described in this syllabus. You are expected to master the material assigned in this outline. A student shall not, without my express authorization, make or receive any recording, including but not limited to audio and video recordings, of any class, co-curricular meeting, organizational meeting, office- or online meeting with me.
