Meet our Sports Management and Sports Marketing students Nat Black-Heaven BA (Hons) Sports Management Now Social Media Executive at Manchester City FC How has the course prepared you for the future? This course prepares you for the future by encouraging you to volunteer. It is a fantastic way to get experience and make your CV stand out. My commitment to volunteering along with my high quality of work gave me the opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch one of my lecturers, Steve Mansfield, nominated me. How has your placement been beneficial to you? Whilst I was at university, I also went on a Placement year at ESPN. As well as giving you real work experience in a 9-5 office, a placement teaches you what to expect when you begin to search for career opportunities. After graduating, I went onto work at the BBC and I now work as a Social Media Executive at Manchester City FC. Every day is different at Manchester City. There are always several tick box tasks such as posting on social media, but then you also have to accommodate visitors and cover events such as us having the Duke of Edinburgh visit. My degree has benefitted my career in teaching me how to research. If your manager asks you to do a project for example at the moment I m looking into how we can work with social media platforms such as Snapchat and WhatsApp it all requires research, and that s something which university has taught me. 18 Sports Management and Sports Marketing

Vicky Cluiet BA (Hons) Sports Management Now Major Events Coordinator at British Athletics What made you choose Sports Management? Athletics has always been where my heart is, ever since I was little. But I knew I wasn t going to be a professional athlete, so instead I looked at University. I wanted to go into events management, but I needed the degree to get me there. I went to a University fair and spoke to tutors from Manchester Metropolitan, they were brilliant and knew exactly what I wanted and how I could achieve it. I thought Yes, that clicks. How has the course prepared you for the future? My degree particularly helped me with the business side of sport. We studied how football clubs are run, where their outgoings go and where their income comes from, which really helps in my current role when trying to save as much money as possible. The staff who taught me were great too, particularly Anne Thompson and Steve Mansfield. Anne had just come from working on the Olympics which was amazing as it was the type of career I was aiming for. She would also round different work experience opportunities in the city each week. Manchester is a fantastic city for sporting events with so many sports venues. I volunteered at the indoor track cycling championships in my fourth year. I also completed a placement at ROSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). It was both my degree and my placement that ensured I was completely prepared for my job. I now work at British Athletics as a Major Events Coordinator, which involves anything from booking event venues, organising catering and managing up to 4000 volunteers each year to preparing media and press releases. It s quite a varied role but it s great to be on this side of sport. mmu.ac.uk 19

Meet our Sports Management and Sports Marketing students Alice Sharpe BA (Hons) Sports Management What made you choose Sports Management? Sport has always been the main focus in my life, competing to a high level in Triathlon since I was eleven, it has always been part of my daily routine. Whilst studying sport and business at school, I knew I wanted to combine the two, Sports Management did just that. I am really enjoying developing my passion in sport into a career. How has the course prepared you for the future? This course has opened many doors for me, allowing me to do things I would never have thought of doing! The theory and knowledge I have gained has given me a wider and more in-depth understanding of funding, government policies and the operation of a business. How has your placement year been beneficial to you? I am currently on placement with Manchester City Council in the Major Sport Events Team. Day to day, I have been involved with booking venues, writing up news bulletins, attending planning meetings and our website. During our events, I have taken on more operational tasks, working on site in numerous roles. For example, during the World Taekwondo Grand Prix, I worked in the accreditation office processing team registration fees and helped run the events social media. I have enjoyed gaining first-hand experience of events from start to finish. The build up to the event can be stressful, but the whole experience is extremely exciting and rewarding. Why would you recommend the course to other students? If you have an interest in sport this course allows you to turn that interest into a career. It gives you the knowledge, the information and the opportunities to grow your CV to prepare you for your graduate job! 20 Sports Management and Sports Marketing

Doyin Layade BA (Hons) Sports Marketing and Management Now Global Football and Rugby Agent at Wasserman Sports Group What made you choose Sports Marketing Management? I was interested in studying a sports based degree and this one stood out. This course highlights the different career options available in the industry. There is superb support from lecturers who go the extra mile to help you. You are also surrounded by people who share the same interest and passions as you, which makes making friends and networking much easier. How has the course prepared you for the future? It has given me an advantage amongst some of my peers as having a qualification such as this shows my drive to work in sport and that it wasn t an afterthought of a career. How has your placement been beneficial to you? I worked at Tesco during my placement year in two roles; firstly as an Operations Assistant and then as an Assistant Buyer. My placement year was beneficial as I gained a years working experience that other graduates may not have. I gained an understanding of what full time employment is like, learning how to manage my time better. I developed new skills such as negotiation, client management, IT skills and the correct way of being professional in an office environment. I have plans to start my own company in the future but I am currently looking to develop my own name in industry first and build up the connections that will help my company to be a success. Why would you recommend the course to other students? The lecturers pushed me to undertake relevant work and volunteering to gain experience. During my time at MMU, this included: working as a Student Ambassador, a part time job at Arsenal FC, being president of the Golf Society and volunteering at Soccerex after graduation. mmu.ac.uk 21

Placements A placement year can be an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on-the-job training whilst earning a salary. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study. We have an award-winning placement team, who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years experience of matching students to employers. They advertise over 1,000 vacancies each year and organise an annual placement fair where you meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students. The team also delivers CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice and will conduct a mock interview with you so you can practice your interview technique. The placement jobs market is highly competitive and it is your responsibility to be pro-active and apply for vacancies. We recommend that you start researching companies and opportunities during your first year and apply for positions at the start of your second year. Finding the right opportunity and the right position is important because if you are a good match to your placement, your employer could offer you a full-time position when you have graduated. In % of Business School placement students graduated with a First or 2:1 degree I worked at Tesco during my placement year in two roles; firstly as an Operations Assistant and then as an Assistant Buyer. My placement year was beneficial as I gained a year s work experience that other graduates may not have. I gained an understanding of what full-time employment is like, learning how to manage my time better. I developed new skills such as negotiation, client management, IT skills and the correct way of being professional in an office environment.
