Undergraduate degree courses Sport Management and Marketing 2014 Entry As a sports graduate you can consider working for: national agencies and governing bodies of sport; local authorities; health and fitness clubs, sport and leisure complexes, sport promotion and media companies; and organisations allied to sport services, medicine, education and research. Some of our graduates choose to study for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) so that they can become teachers. Faculty of Business and Law Business School
Sport Management and Marketing Welcome to the Business School As one of the UK s largest Business Schools based in the heart of Manchester, an elite sporting city, we are committed to developing the next generation of worldleading sporting professionals. Wealth of experience, depth of expertise There are over 350 staff in the Business School and, as part of the Faculty of Business and Law, we have strong links with 75 staff in Manchester Law School. Alongside their teaching duties, our academic staff undertake research, contribute to professional associations and maintain close professional links with employers. This ensures that your studies are informed by the latest research and we work with you to develop the skills employers expect to the industry standards they trust. International endorsement and credibility Sport is a global industry and we have a global profile. We have active links with over 27 partner institutions (14 in Europe and 13 in Australia, China and the USA). We are committed to achieving the international standards for Business Schools set by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and have been accepted into membership by AACSB. Working with UK and international employers We design and deliver bespoke training and management development programmes for companies and organisations. Companies trust and work with us because of our flexible approach and ability to adapt to their needs. They also value our links with professional bodies and industry associations. For example, Manchester City Council asked lecturers Helen Schutzmann and Steve Mansfield to deliver the training for the Selection Event Volunteers (SEV) programme for the North-West region for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over 100 people participated in the training which enabled them to interview and select volunteers for the London 2012 Games. Manchester Aquatic Centre provides a high performance environment for British Water Polo and was a training base for the Swimming Australia Olympic Team for the London Games
The city is dubbed the UK s capital of sport for good reason. Brendan Foster CBE Professional accreditation and recognition Many of our degree courses are accredited by professional organisations. This independent endorsement reflects the work-focused nature of the course and the practical skills that are integrated into your studies. Britain s all-conquering track cycle team is based at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. It has a 19 million BMX facility and one of the fastest board tracks in the world. Responsible management and environmental sustainability Social responsibility, environmental sustainability and maintaining high ethical standards are characteristics we look to develop and instil in all our students and graduates. As you progress through your studies you will consider issues such as how London 2012 met its promise of being the world s first truly sustainable Olympic and Paralymic Games and the great strides companies such as Adidas are taking to achieving their sustainability goals. Hub for business The Business School is more than an excellent teaching centre. It also has a role as a source of advice and help for businesses of all sizes. For example, our Centre for Enterprise has worked with 1,000 business people, improving their leadership, innovation and entrepreneur skills to support the drive for growth in the region. And in partnership with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Programme we have delivered management training to many small and medium enterprises to help growth and create jobs. 3
Sport Management and Marketing Study environment Our magnificent 75 million teaching and research headquarters is designed to be one of the finest and most environmentally sustainable academic buildings in the UK. Teaching rooms The spacious lecture theatres and seminar rooms use state-of-the-art technology and enable our staff to deliver engaging and interactive classes. We utilise different room layouts to compliment different teaching styles from banked seating in formal lecture theatres to Harvard style seminar rooms. IT facilities IT and printing facilities are provided in the technology suites. There are also laptop counters throughout the Business School for you to check your s on or plug your own laptop into. The MMU-WiFi network covers the whole building and the park outside so you can keep in touch wherever you are on campus. Study spaces Each floor has a variety of study spaces you can use throughout the day and evening. These include group study zones, social study spaces for project meetings, and quieter areas. 4
Comfort and convenience Food and drink The Hub Café and Hub Kitchen serve a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals. Both offer preferential prices for students. There is also seating in the catering atrium where you can enjoy food you ve brought from home. Lockers There are 500 coin-operated lockers in the building so that you can store some of your personal belongings whilst you are on campus. Rest rooms and showers Selected rest rooms on the ground floor have showers. They are particularly useful if you run or cycle to the Business School and want to freshen up before your lectures or if you need to get changed in the Business School before going to work. Student Hub The Hub brings together our experienced advisory teams who are here to help you with accommodation, student finance, careers, placements and internships, Moodle (our webbased study environment) and accessing support if you have dyslexia or a disability. The International Office is also based in the Hub and provides a range of advice to European and overseas students from practical matters, such as opening a bank account in the UK, to specialist support on issues such as visas. Library The Sir Kenneth Green All Saints University Library is next door to the Business School. It is open year-round and 24/7 at peak study and exam times. The Library stocks a large selection of books and provides access to a huge digital library with journals, e-books and research papers. Library staff run regular information skills training sessions to ensure you can locate, access and select the most appropriate resources from the wealth of material available. Campus life The Business School is at the heart of the All Saints Campus. When you are ready to take a break from your studies, the Students Union, Capitol Theatre and Holden Gallery are just a short walk away. Sport clubs and societies We have a comprehensive range of sports clubs. Each club accommodates different levels of ability and welcomes complete beginners through to elite sports men and women who are competing at regional, national or international level. We also run recreational leagues for basketball, netball, rugby union, boxing, football and running. The training venues we use are close by. The University s Sugden Sports Centre (includes squash and 5-a-side pitches) and Manchester Aquatics Centre are across the road from the Business School. At Sportcity, which is less than 2 miles from campus, our students use the Manchester Regional Arena (athletics), Manchester Regional Tennis Centre, Manchester Velodrome and National Squash Centre. Slightly further out at Belle Vue are the Manchester Regional Centres for gymnastics and hockey. 5
Sport Management and Marketing Connecting you with employers Damian Hughes was one of our guest lecturers during induction week. Through his consultancy, LiquidThinker, he delivers management training that integrates best practice from the worlds of sport and business. Aldi, Bentley, Co-op, Tesco and Debenhams are just some of the employers that came on to campus last year to talk to students about graduate schemes and career opportunities. Throughout your studies there are opportunities to build your profile in your chosen profession by gaining work experience, completing workrelated assignments and developing your network of contacts. Mentor Match The Mentor Match scheme puts you in touch with a recent graduate or an experienced manager who is working in your chosen sector. They provide you with insider knowledge about their sector and share tips and advice to help you progress with your career. Meeting graduate employers Each term there is a packed schedule of employer visits to campus. Organised by the University s Careers and Employability Service, these presentations enable you to meet employers from different sectors who are actively recruiting graduates. This is your opportunity to find out more about the company, the vacancies they have available, and their application process. Guest lectures Each year we invite professionals from the sports sector to deliver guest lectures where they share their industry knowledge and insight with you. There is usually time before or after the lecture where you can talk to them as part of a small group or one-to-one. Client projects During your studies you will be asked to complete group assignments where you address a brief set by a client. Depending on your degree, this may involve organising an event for a sports club, addressing a marketing issue for a sports company, or supporting a sports development initiative. Volunteering mmuxchange enables you to undertake voluntary work experience for a local sports club or company, and develop your skills in management, marketing, accounting and finance or coaching. Our students have completed assignments for the European Taekwondo Championships, National Cycling Centre and football clubs in the region including Manchester United, Manchester City, FC United of Manchester and Wigan Athletic. 6
Yuta Musuda, Love and Xjineji Zeng worked with Jonathan Fletcher, the University s Sports Development Officer, to deliver a basketball tournament to mark the launch of the recreational sports league. Part-time work Working part-time or during the holidays is a great way to get experience of working in different sectors and developing transferable skills that are highly valued by employers. The University s Careers and Employability Service has an interactive jobs board where you can find details of current part-time, graduate and voluntary vacancies. Jobs4Students is the University s own student temping agency and advertises paid opportunities to work on campus for the University. Placement year A placement year can be an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on-the-job training whilst earning a salary. There are also opportunities for you to undertake a placementbased project where you research a business issue for your employer. This project can count towards one of your final year units and reduces your workload in your final year. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study. We have an award-winning placement team, who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years experience of matching students to employers. They advertise over 1,000 vacancies each year, organise an annual placement fair where you can meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students, deliver CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice, and will conduct a mock interview with you so you can practice your interview technique. The placement jobs market is competitive and it is your responsibility to be pro-active and apply for vacancies. We recommend that you start researching companies and opportunities during your first year and apply for positions at the start of your second year. Finding the right opportunity and the right position is important because if you are a good match to your placement, your employer could offer you a full-time position when you have graduated. 7
Sport Management and Marketing BA (Hons) Sports Management If you have ambitions to develop a successful managerial career in the sport, leisure and recreation industries then you should consider our BA (Hons) Sports Management degree. Natimi Black-Heaven, 23, is a former US college sprint champion. He is a keen basketball player, Vice Chairman of the University basketball team and spends 15 hours per week, coaching and refereeing. He was an Olympic volunteer and is pictured with former Olympic, Commonwealth, European and World Champion, Jonathan Edwards CBE. Introduction The importance of sport and recreation in all areas of life is now recognised not only in terms of our health and wellbeing but also as a highly profitable business sector. The experience of the London 2012 Olympics has shown how important sport is to the UK and the clear benefits of having appropriately skilled managers in place to make the most of these opportunities. This degree is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to develop a career in this fast moving area of work. You will learn how to apply management theory, concepts and principles to sport management issues and have the opportunity to apply this knowledge in a practical way. Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on creativity and its application to real-life business challenges such as: running recruitment campaigns; developing marketing strategies; or interpreting the likes and wants of consumers through the study of market research. Special Features The coaching unit enables you to spend 20 hours working in a sport of your choice. Current students have worked with the Manchester United Foundation, Premiere Sport and a number of community sports clubs. We are also working in collaboration with the England Handball Association and England Basketball to enable our students to gain their UKCC Level 1 and Level 2 coaching qualifications. While on the course you are encouraged to register with the Manchester Sports Volunteer Bureau, which enables you to work and gain experience at sporting events across the city. As well as guest lectures from people who work in sport, leisure and recreation, we run a number of field trips to clubs such as Sale Sharks and Salford Reds so you can meet professionals working in the sector. 8

Title Sport Management and Marketing BA (Hons) Sports Marketing Management The BA (Hons) Sports Marketing Management degree one of the first to be offered in the UK is aimed at people who want to learn the skills and techniques to enable them to specialise in this growing area of business. Introduction In this fast-moving competitive industry there is a demand for talented professionals who understand the sports sector and can use their marketing skills to best effect. The degree has been developed in conjunction with practitioners from the sports marketing industry who are also involved in the delivery of the programme as guest speakers. This enables you to learn directly from their real life experience and industry knowledge. Through this degree, you can develop the skills and knowledge to devise, plan and co-ordinate marketing activities for the sports sector. An important part of the course is the development of an understanding of the unique features of marketing in a sports environment and as part of this you will be introduced to areas such as brand management, licensing and maximising commercial potential. Creativity is a highly-valued attribute in this sector and you will be encouraged to develop fresh approaches to marketing challenges throughout the course. Typical challenges you may face are maximising the commercial return of a sports venue, developing a sustainable fan base for a sports club or sports brand, launching a sportswear range or attracting a media partner for a new venue. Special Features This course is supported and endorsed by employers meaning that the skills of our students are recognised when they reach the point of entering the competitive jobs market. During your placement, you will be encouraged to identify a work based issue that you can explore and develop into a research project in your final year. Our students have been able to apply for placements at Nike, Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Manchester City Council Sports Development 10

It has enabled me to gain valuable hands on experience and gather vital contacts in the sports industry through working with professional football clubs, such as Blackpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City; along with creating vibrant marketing ideas for the up and coming Blackpool Elite Soccer (BES). I have also had the opportunity to play a key role in promoting the local NHS health campaign - All Together Now.
