Corbin Schools Recognized by SESC The Southeast Southcentral Educational Cooperative, SESC, recognized area schools for their 2015 Kentucky test scores at their monthly meeting in London, Kentucky on November 12, SESC Executive Director David Johnson presented recognition banners to the schools for their achievements. Dr. Stephen Pruitt, the new Kentucky Education Commissioner, was also in attendance to congratulate the schools. The Corbin Independent School District received numerous awards. The Corbin District received a Distinguished District banner for scoring in the 98th percentile in the state. Corbin High School, Corbin Middle School, and Corbin Intermediate School each received a School of Distinction banner for scoring between the 95th and 99th percentile in the state. School of Distinction is the highest honor an individual school can achieve. Corbin Middle School and the Corbin District each received Top 10 Achievement banners for being ranked in the top 10 in the state. Lastly, the Corbin District, Corbin Middle School, and Corbin High School each received a SESC Gold Medalist banner. Corbin Schools administrators were present at the meeting to receive the awards. The principals gave all credit to the faculty, staff, and students of the Corbin Independent School District. I am honored to represent CHS as we received several awards in recognition of our outstanding state accountability scores. Obviously, the credit goes to our teachers and students, because they are the ones who manufactured and produced the results, Corbin High School Principal John Crawford said. Corbin Middle School Principal Cindy Davis agreed, All of these accomplishments are a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication that comes from the faculty, staff, and students. Thank you for everything you do everyday.
CHS Hosts KSBA Regional Meeting Corbin Schools hosted the Regional Kentucky School Board Association Meeting at Corbin High School. Corbin Schools hosted the event due to Corbin Board of Education Chairperson, Kim Croley, being elected as the regional board chairperson. Croley was elected chairperson in 2014 and serves the Upper Cumberland region. The meeting consisted of workshops and presentations for the regions board members and superintendents. The meeting is held in each region on a rotating three year basis to allow school board members within the region to receive Professional Development opportunities close to home, Chair Croley said. Corbin High School was our gracious host and the school shone bright in every way. Corbin High School students assisted with the hosting duties, with culinary students providing and serving hors d oeuvres, art students displaying their recent artwork, and student Zach Hart providing live musical entertainment. The entertainment was followed by a dinner, catered by Corbin Food Service, and the KSBA presentations. The meeting program was entitled If you don t know where you re going, how will you know when you get there? Approximately 60 board members and superintendents attended the regional meeting. Each person in attendance received a gift bag and door prizes were awarded at the end of the evening. Board members and superintendents were complimentary of the meeting and facilities. Corbin Schools would like to thank the Corbin High School students and staff, Corbin Food Services staff, Alicia Hammack and Rhonda Gabbard, and our community partners for providing the door prizes. 3 Corbin Schools Host Veterans Day Programs Corbin Schools celebrated Veterans Day, November 11, CHS Students Attend EKU Arts Seminar Each school held a special program to recognize the sacrifice of our local veterans. Corbin High School, Corbin Intermediate School, Corbin Middle School, and Corbin Elementary held assemblies for their students. Colonel Mike Farley spoke to Corbin High School and Corbin Elementary School Students, Bob Terrell spoke to Corbin Middle School students, and Colonel Arley Longworth spoke to Corbin Intermediate School students. They shared their personal experiences as well as the meaning of Veterans Day. Local veterans were invited to attend the assemblies. Corbin Primary School hosted their annual veterans breakfast and parade. Students were able to invite veterans to the school. The students got the opportunity to perform for the veterans and have breakfast with them. Following breakfast, the students lined the halls and cheered for the veterans as they walked through. Nearly 200 veterans and their families were in attendance. Corbin Primary would like to thank Representative Regina Bunch for donating flags for each student to wave during the parade. Corbin High School JROTC students attended each of the ceremonies. Corbin Schools host veterans for a special assemblies each year. Corbin High School students Matthew Laun, Brenna Ingle, and Katie Ingle were selected to attend a Regional Visual Arts Seminar at Eastern Kentucky University Corbin Campus. The students were selected for the event based on their identification as Gifted and Talented in Visual Arts. At the seminar, the students spent the day creating pop art. They had the opportunity to create jewelry, costumes, and back drops. It was truly amazing to see these students create costumes out of a variety of fabric and material. They also created jewelry out of everything from plastic baby hair brushes to an assortment of beads and clay, Corbin High School Teacher Kim Moore said. The Corbin students joined other students from local schools including Lynn Camp, Williamsburg, Knox Central, and Barbourville. The students were paired with students from the other schools for the project. Each group chose a theme and created their projects based on the theme. The event was hosted by the head of the Art Department at EKU and EKU senior art students assisted with the projects.
CMS Hosts Pumpkins in the Park Corbin Middle School students hosted Pumpkins in the Park at Sanders Park in downtown Corbin. The event was held during the downtown trick or treat event. The students displayed 75 painted pumpkins at the event as well as offered crafts and face painting for the downtown trick or treaters. They also served apple cider and offered presentations of the new Corbin Middle School. Corbin Middle School had 40 students working the event. Members of the Junior Beta Club, Miss Congeniality Club, CMS Ambassadors, and CMS student artists helped plan and organize the event. Students recorded PSAs, wrote stories for the local papers, interviewed Mr. McNeel on the CMS building project, supplied and participated in crafts, and painted faces. Numerous children and parents attended the event throughout the downtown trick or treat. The pumpkins displayed in the park were painted by Corbin Middle School students. The school hosted four days of afterschool pumpkin painting for any students wishing to participate. Two local artists, Kay Gray and Susan White, worked with the students to create the pumpkins. The local artists judged the finished pumpkins before displaying them at the event. The winners were: 1st Place: Abe Lincoln by Kayley Partin and Cleopatra by Allie Pennington. 2nd Place: Dog by Jackson Moore and Trae Skinner and Cat by Anthony Risner. 3rd Place: Minion by Cameron Alsip and Cinderella by Emma Smith. Honorable Mention Awards: ET by Baleigh Walden, Gumball by Kaylee Morales, Laura Ingles by Madison Lundy, Tin Man by Andrea Dugger, and Elephant by Hailey Hembree The event was held in support of Parent and Community Involvement. The next event is Family Math Night on November 17 from 5-7 p.m. at Corbin Middle School.
Corbin Middle School seventh grade students participated in their annual scientist project. CMS Students Participate in Annual Scientist Project As part of the project, the seventh grade students dressed as their assigned scientist and presented a presentation to the class. The project teaches students the importance of science and history. The students learn about scientists and how they have impacted history. It also teaches them how to do correct research and public speaking skills. Corbin Middle School Science Teacher Corean Rougeux said. The students are required to research their scientist, complete a biography poster, type a speech, and give the speech on why their scientist should win the lifetime achievement award in science. Students completed the project on scientist such as Ben Franklin, Jane Goodall, Neil Armstrong, and Sally Ride. Each of the 230 seventh grade students had a different scientist. All seventh grade students are required to participate in the project which is held every year around Halloween. Corbin Middle School has been participating the scientist project for more than two decades. Berea Festival Dancers Visit Corbin Elementary The Berea Festival Dancers visited Corbin Elementary School. The Berea Festival Dancers performed numerous dances for the elementary students. The event helped to educate students on Appalachian dance as part of their Arts and Humanities classes. The students learned folk dances, Indian ritual dances, and dances from other countries. Third and fourth graders have likely not seen this type of dance; however, their ability to participate in it was fun for them, as well as a positive and kinetic educational opportunity. 21st Century Program Coordinator Chelsea Moberly said. Moberly, a previous Berea Festival Dancer, coordinated the event for students. All Corbin Elementary students attended the event and Redhound Enrichment students attended a dance workshop with the group. The Berea Festival Dancers is comprised of 40 middle and high school students of the Berea community. The group is a noncompetitive group that practices, performs, and travels. The group has the opportunity to perform at schools, festivals, and local Elderhostels as well as go on many national and international trips.

The students are able to go from car to car collecting treats. The schools had approximately 15 cars set up for the event. The purpose of the event is to promote family involvement and create a fun activity for students. The Corbin Preschool Center has participated in the event for two years and this was Corbin Primary students first year participating. Corbin Schools would like to thank all parent volunteers who helped with this event. Corbin High School hosted their first Halloween Costume Contest to promote positive school climate and celebrate Halloween. AIM classes had the opportunity to select a costume for their teacher for the event. During the contest, each teacher was introduced in their costume to all Corbin High School students. The students then voted to select the winning costume by grade level. The winners were: Grade 9: Brian Theodore - Scarecrow Grade 10: Kim Moore - Shrek Grade 11: Pam Bishop & Tosha Wallen - The Book Fairy and Mary Poppins Grade 12: Josh Watkins - Colonel Sanders The winning AIM classes received treat bags.
