1 Name: Position Sought: GradYear: Martin Luther King HS Election Packet Dear ASB Officer Applicant, Thank you for your interest in running for an Associated Student Body (ASB) position. Being on ASB is an important job that requires a lot of time, effort, dedication and responsibility. It is very rewarding as it gives you great memories, opportunities to have fun, involves you in school activities and decisions that affect every student. Students must complete all parts of the election application packet and complete all pre-election activities by the deadlines or you will be ineligible to run for office. NO EXCEPTIONS! To qualify to run for an office, you will be required to submit and meet the requirements contained in this application. Upon completion of pre-election activities and granted approval from the school, you will be given permission to run for elected office. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Rosa in the activities office (or lsrosa@rusd.k12.ca.us). Be sure you know the deadlines and meet them or you will be automatically disqualified. 2 ASB Election Application This application is to be used to apply for elected ASB positions. Students must complete all parts of the election application packet, satisfactorily complete all pre-election activities and be approved by school representatives before running a campaign for elected office. Code 4900): I recommend the aforementioned candidate as an outstanding representative of Martin Luther King High School. (Not beyond 2 nd step) Dean of Students Signature or Dean s Administrative Professionals Signature II. Counselor Recommendation: I recommend the aforementioned candidate as an outstanding representative of Martin Luther King High School with GPA at or higher than a 2.5. Counselor Signature Overall Academic GPA (2.5 or greater) Positions Available: A. President shall be a junior at the time of elections and have previous ASB experience. B. Vice-President shall be at least a sophomore at the time of elections. C. Recording Secretary shall be a junior or sophomore at the time of elections. D. Treasurer shall be a sophomore at the time of elections and have previous ASB experience. E. Corresponding Secretary shall be at least a sophomore at the time of elections. 2
3 Teacher Recommendation Worksheets Every candidate for office must obtain three faculty recommendations using the attached Teacher Recommendation Worksheet. Candidates must take the recommendation form to three current teachers and provide those teachers with envelopes. The teachers should complete the recommendations and then seal them in the given envelopes and sign the envelope seal before returning them to the candidate. The candidate should submit all three of the sealed Teacher Recommendation Worksheets with this election packet by the due date (March 7, 2012). Letter of Introduction Each candidate is required to submit a Letter of Introduction, a brief written account that addresses the questions below and incorporates your past leadership experience. The letter should be one-page in length. Please submit something that would be acceptable in a professional environment. Students who do not complete an adequate Letter of Introduction will be disqualified from running for office. The letter should be submitted as part of the election packet. 1. Resumé Each candidate is required to submit a resumé as a brief written account of personal, educational, and work-related qualifications and experience. The resumé should be one-page in length. Though there is no specific format for the appearance of the resumé, each candidate is strongly encouraged to review traditional resumé formatting and submit something that would be acceptable in a professional environment. Students who do not complete an adequate resume will be disqualified from running for office. The resumé should be submitted as part of the election packet. The resume should contain references to the following information: 1. Awards / Special Recognition 2. Work / Community Service / Club History 3. Qualifications / Skills / Strengths 4. Academics / Certifications 5. Ambitions / Interests Biography Each candidate is required to submit a brief (35 words or less) biography to be included with their school picture on the website for online voting. Please attach a hard copy of your picture to your biography as well as send both picture and biography to lsrosa@rusd.k12.ca.us no later than March 7 th. 3

8 ASB Code of Conduct I, the undersigned, solemnly swear that I will abide by the following Code of Conduct set forth by the Martin Luther King High School ASB Constitution and activities director. The following standards of eligibility, conduct, and responsibilities shall apply to all members during their term of office. I. Academic Achievement A. I will maintain an unweighted academic 2.5 grade point average computed on a 4.0 scale with no deficient or failing grades. B. If I receive less than a 2.5 GPA or receive a failing or deficient grade, I understand that I will be dismissed from office by the activities director of MLK High School. C. I understand I may be asked to submit a record of my scholastic achievements to the activities director at the end of each grading period. II. Behavioral Standards A. As a member of ASB, I realize that my conduct must be beyond reproach at all times, on and off campus. (It is critical that you understand the full implications of this statement. Ask Mrs. Rosa if you need further explanation). B. I will uphold the constitution and my oath of office. C. I will cooperate with and support the ASB president and activities director. D. I will abide by school dress regulations at all times. E. I will not carry nor use any illegal chemical substances or stimulants, drugs, alcohol, etc at any time, on or off campus. F. I will display good sportsmanship at all times and serve as an ambassador for Martin Luther King High School at other schools. G. I will maintain a satisfactory citizenship record and will not be beyond step two of a behavior contract with my assistant principal. H. I understand if I am suspended from Martin Luther King High School, I will be removed from ASB permanently. I. Failure to comply with any of these rules may result in immediate removal from office as determined by the Martin Luther King High School activities director. III. Responsibilities of Office A. I understand that attendance to class is mandatory. B. I understand that it is my responsibility to work on projects assigned to me during class periods. C. I understand that I will be assigned work tasks at all ASB functions and that it is my responsibility to work at ASB events. D. I understand that if I am elected to an ASB position, I must be enrolled in Student Leadership Class during 3 rd Period. E. I understand that I will be assigned, and expected to execute, tasks by the activities director and/or the ASB president. F. I understand that if I am elected and do not satisfactorily fulfill my ASB job responsibilities I may be removed from office and the ASB class at the discretion of the activities director. G. I will show up to all calendared events. H. I will attend the mandatory summer retreat. Violation of any of the stated rules is cause for removal from office. Removal from office is determined by the activities director, pursuant to the regulations set forth by the ASB constitution. 9 Election Campaign Rules and Guidelines Candidates who satisfactorily complete all pre-campaign activities and who are given permission to run for office by ASB and school administration must comply with the following rules for campaigning as they seek election to office. 1. Candidates must have a 2.5 minimum grade point average (GPA) never falling below a 2.5 cumulatively. You must ask your academic advisor/counselor to verify your GPA and include it on page two of this packet. The activities director will be checking GPAs, and students who do not meet the requirements will not be allowed to run for office. The minimum GPA must be maintained during the time you are an officer. Candidates may not be beyond step two of a behavior contract and may not have a U in citizenship. 2. Candidates must meet all deadlines and attend all campaign and election meetings as described in the election timeline. NO EXCEPTIONS! 3. Candidates may have posters and other campaign material including pins, pennants, and buttons. However, no adhesive stickers may be used. Candy and food may not be used to promote your candidacy. Provide your own materials; do not plan to use ASB resources for election purposes. This includes blue/duct tape and butcher paper and paint. Posters should be in good taste and promote the candidate who is running. Negative or slanderous campaign materials or comments about other candidates will result in disqualification from the election process. Campaign posters must be approved and signed in advance by the activities director. 4. Flyers of any kind are not allowed. 5. USE BLUE PAINTERS TAPE ONLY. Do not attach posters to stucco, painted or glass surfaces. ONLY railings and painted walls. Posters are not allowed in the classrooms. 6. Results of the election will not be announced until the campus is free from all posters and campaign materials. Posters must be removed by 3:00 on Thursday March 15 th. 7. Elections will all be held online. All candidates will have their school picture and a brief biography displayed on the voting website. Voting will take place on the link posted on the school website beginning Friday, March 16 at 10am and will end Saturday, March 17 at 11:59pm. 8. Any violation of the above rules and regulations will result in disqualification.
