2 Dental Assistants (DEN) are members of the Health Services Branch of the Navy. They are primarily responsible for chairside assistance to the Dental Officer and patient management. A Dental Assistant is responsible for: assisting the dental officer in chair-side treatment of patients; sterilisation of dental instruments and surgery infection control; preparation and assisting with oral healthcare procedures; and the processing and mounting of dental radiographs. A Dental Assistant is also responsible for Dental, clerical and administration procedures, which include: stores procurement; collecting and entering data on computer databases; and filing and document dispatch and receipt. Dental Assistants are generally employed in Major Dental Facilities (three or more dental practitioners) located at Sydney, Rockingham and Nowra. When competent, Dental Assistants complete the Senior Dental Assistants Course and are then employed in Minor Dental Units (one dental practitioner) and Fleet Mobile Dental Teams on ships. Senior Dental Assistants can be nominated for the Preventive Dental Assistant Course which provides them with the skills to provide oral health education to patients under the prescription of a Dental Officer. A Dental Assistant can further progress through the career structure to the role of Practice Manager. A Practice Manager coordinates the planning, organising, directing and controlling of practice resources, or Fleet Mobile Dental Teams, under the direction of the Senior Dental Officer. Entry Other Ranks (Non Technical) General Entry (Non-Technical Trades) is the term used to describe the non-technical jobs available to people entering the Navy as Sailors (non-officer entry) and for which trade training is provided. Each Sailor job in the Navy is referred to as a category; for example, Boatswain's Mate is a category. Non-Technical Sailors perform a wide range of tasks in support of Navy operations. General Entry (Non-Technical Trades) Sailors graduate from recruit training with the rank of Seaman Star and generally progress to Able Seaman after 12 months of effective service following completion of employment training. Further promotion to Leading Seaman, Petty Officer, Chief Petty Officer and Warrant Officer is based on merit and takes into consideration performance, time in rank, individual readiness (medical, dental, physical fitness) and vacancies. There is considerable variation between categories. However, as a guide, the following minimum times are spent in each rank: Recruit to Seaman Star (Unqualified) - 11 weeks (length of Military Training course); Seaman Star (Unqualified) to Seaman - Length of Employment Training course; Seaman to Able Seaman - 12 months after completion of employment training course; Able Seaman to Leading Seaman - minimum of 2 years; Leading Seaman to Petty Officer - minimum of 4 years; Petty Officer to Chief Petty Officer - minimum of 4 years; and Chief Petty Officer to Warrant Officer - minimum of 4 years. Leading Seamen are referred to as Junior Non-Commissioned Officers. Leading Seamen are the first line of supervisors in the chain of command and as such have an important role in the maintenance of good order and discipline among their subordinates. They are expected to provide an important role model for subordinates. Petty Officers are members of the company of senior sailors. Petty Officers perform management and technical specialist duties within their category. Their positions will involve personal accountability. Chief Petty Officers are also members of the company of senior sailors and are required to demonstrate a well developed capacity for self directed work and a high degree of applied professional theoretical knowledge and well developed supervisory competence. Warrant Officer is the most senior sailor rank. They are required to possess superior leadership and professional qualities.

3 Warrant Officers may undertake planning, creative research and problem solving activities. Their positions often involve a significant degree of personal accountability. The opportunity to transfer to commissioned officer is open to all sailors of Able Seaman rank and above who possess the necessary educational qualifications and personal attributes. Irrespective of category, sailors' duties are just as important as specialist duties. Therefore on a ship, all sailors will perform such activities as: Fire Fighting - containment and extinguishing of all types of fires; First Aid - knowledge and application of basic first-aid medical skills; Duty Watch - member of the overnight security, fire fighting and emergency party; Communal Duties - working in teams to help clean and maintain all work and living areas; Damage Control - assisting with ship damage emergency repairs; Replenishment at Sea - assisting with the re-supply of ships at sea; Ship Husbandry - maintenance and upkeep of ships' surfaces, fittings and equipment; and Physical Fitness - All members of the Navy are required to maintain an appropriate level of physical fitness. Physical fitness is tested on an annual basis. While in a shore establishment, in addition to normal day to day employment, all sailors will perform: Duty Watch - member of the overnight security, fire fighting and emergency party (including first aid) on a roster basis. Qualified Qualified Entry Sailor (QES) recruits undergo basic training at the Navy's Recruit Training School (RTS) located at HMAS Cerberus on Western Port Bay, Victoria, about 70 km south-east of Melbourne. All QES recruits undergo this basic training, regardless of the specific job for which they have enlisted. The 11 week course covers general orientation in Naval customs and practices, personal development, basic seamanship skills, armed and unarmed drill (marching), safety and survival at sea, and sport and physical training. As a trained member of the Active Naval Reserve, you are obligated to serve a minimum of 20 days per year but you may work up to 200 days per financial year in approved positions. Unlike the Army and Air Force that set aside specific days for meeting minimum attendance requirement, in the Navy you will have to seek employment in either Funded Reserve Commitment positions, Project work or Permanent Navy vacancies. This means that you will effectively contribute to Navy capability rather than just parading. You will be assisted to find work by either your category sponsor or through advertising material provided to Reserves on a weekly basis. Reserve personnel may volunteer for a period of full-time service with the Permanent Navy, provided the member's services are required. Further information on part-time ADF careers can be found by accessing the Defence Reserves Support Council website. The Council promotes the benefits of Reserve service by establishing partnerships with the community and employers. The new baseline entry DA qualification in the ADF will be Cert IV DA (Radiography). Applicants with a Cert IV DA without the Radiography specialisation will be considered, on the basis and understanding they will need to attend a two week Radiography module at the ADF Dental School, HMAS Cerberus, within two years of completing Recruit training. 8 Military Training Other Ranks (Non Technical), Qualified Duration: 11 weeks Location: Crib Point, Victoria The Recruit School at HMAS CERBERUS is situated on Western Port Bay, Victoria about 70 kilometres south east of Melbourne. The school has its own administration building, accommodation blocks and classrooms and operates as an independent unit within the greater training environment of HMAS CERBERUS. The eleven week Recruit Course is designed to give you sufficient knowledge and skills on which to base your navy career. The course includes both classroom and practical activities. Most subjects are individually tested. Examinations are set to ensure Recruits are sufficiently prepared to undertake further specialist training at category schools. Private study areas are available in the school and a Duty Instructor is available for assistance during non-instructional hours. When you are offered a General Entry job in the Navy, you will receive Joining Instructions for the Recruit Training Course. These instructions will provide you with a good indication of the daily routine while at the Recruit School and what will be expected of you during your training. This information is also available by accessing the Navy Recruit School web site. Recruits who successfully complete the course, including the Navy Swimming Test, participate in a Graduation Parade, which is normally held on the Friday of the last week of training. Recruits will have the opportunity to invite family and friends to view the parade. After Graduation personnel will be posted to category schools at HMAS CERBERUS or at other training establishments throughout Australia. During Military (Initial Recruit) Training and (Initial) Employment Training, members may be required to pay a contribution towards meals, accommodation and utilities, depending on a number of factors. Reserve Entry Recruit Course (RERC) All Reserve Entry Recruits attend the Navy Recruit School, at HMAS CERBERUS in Victoria where they undertake the Reserve Entry Recruit Course. The course consists of two separate Phases of in-house training: i.e. 1 x 3 week training block followed by a further 2 weeks undertaken at a later stage. The combining of the 2 phases into one continuous 5 Week block of training is also possible however guidelines exist Please see below for these. Two Phase Method of Training During Phase 1 of training, Reserve Entry Recruits will team up with their full time colleagues and undertake the first 3 weeks of enlistment. Lessons in Basic Naval Knowledge, Swimming, Physical Fitness and Parade Training will be covered. At the end of the 3rd week (19 days after enlistment), students will travel home having completed Phase 1 of their training. Reserve Entry Recruits will then be later required to return to HMAS CERBERUS to complete their 2nd and final Phase of training at a time that suits both the Recruit School s program and themselves. Phase 2 consists of a further 2 weeks (13 days) of in-house training at HMAS Cerberus where students are taught First Aid, Combat Survival and Survival at Sea skills. On the successful completion of Phase 2, students will graduate from the Reserve Entry Recruit Course and travel home. Depending on their chosen field, further category specific training or Qualified Reserve Employment can then be pursued. 5 Week Continuous Training Method If class sizes and the Recruit School Training Program allows, Reserve Applicants may request to conduct their 2 Phases of training in one continuous 5 week block of instruction. This method will require students to change classes at the end of their 3rd week to allow the Phase 2 proficiencies to be obtained. If this method is desired, applicants are required to first check with their Defence Force Recruiting Centre to ensure that a 5 Week Continuous Training program is available.

9 Employment Training Other Ranks (Non Technical) Dental Assistant Course (Unqualified Entry) Following graduation from Military Training, trainees undertake a 12 week ADF Dental Assistant Course at the Australian Defence Force Dental School at HMAS CERBERUS. This course is accreditated by the Dental Assistant Education Council of Australia at Certificate III level. Qualified Qualified Entry Sailor's Course - 4 weeks Following graduation from Military Training, trainees undertake a four week RAN Dental Qualified Entry Sailors course at HMAS CERBERUS, ADF Dental School. The course concentrates on service administration and infection control procedures. On completion of the course members will be posted to their new establishments with the rank of AB with one or two years seniority, depending on experience. Qualified Entry Dental Assistant Course: 4-6 weeks Following graduation from Military Training, trainees are required to complete the ADF Qualified Entry Dental Assistant acquaint record / task book under direct supervision in one of the RAN's four major dental facilities (HMAS CERBERUS, KUTTABUL, STIRLING or ALBATROSS).This should take between four and six weeks of full-time work but can be undertaken in two week blocks. The training concentrates on service administration and infection control procedures and is predominantly provided on-the-job within the Dental Departments. On completion of the acquaint record, sailors are promoted to the rank of AB with one or two years seniority, depending on experience. Sub Specialist Option Other Ranks (Non Technical) Submarine Service Application to transfer to submarines is open to all sailors and some officers, male and female. Volunteers may apply for Acoustic Warfare Analyst (AWA SM) whilst in Recruit School and to other submariner categories as early in their careers as during initial sailor trade and officer primary qualification training. Although not all sailor categories are employed in submarines, Acoustic Warfare Analysts (AWA) and Electronic Warfare Submariners (EWSM) are drawn from any category. Transfer into one of these may be necessary for some personnel to serve in submarines. (See the individual category sections to find out if the trade of your choice has a submarine component. If not, you may volunteer to transfer to AWA or EWSM). If Submarine Service interests YOU let the Interviewing Officer know at your Recruiting Centre. Service in submarines is extremely demanding, both emotionally and physically. Submariners work and live in very close proximity to each other and personal privacy is extremely limited, except when ashore. Submarine personnel work long hours and are constantly subjected to emotional and physical pressures not found in surface ships. Many a new recruit to the Submarine Arm of the Royal Australian Navy believes that he/she has what it takes to become a good Submariner. However, until you have been tested and have experienced the arduous conditions and life inside a submarine, you won't fully appreciate the difficulties. Today's Submariner is a unique breed of sailor/officer. They have met the challenges, been tested to the limits of their endurance and abilities and found to have what it takes to be members of a very demanding arm of the Royal Australian Navy.

10 If you think you have what it takes, then you must be prepared for some very demanding personal challenges throughout your training and employment. If you come through these you will be willingly accepted into the Submarine Arm of the Royal Australian Navy and welcome to wear 'The Dolphins' (the submariner's badge of distinction). Note: Submarine Service is not a sub-specialisation of this category. Transfer of category is necessary to become a submariner. Further information is available on the Submariner pages. Further Training Other Ranks (Non Technical), Qualified Able Seaman or higher ranks may be selected for further advancement courses. Selection for all advancement courses is based on the individual's merit and superior's recommendation. These courses include various leadership and management courses and further category specific training. Category specific courses include: Advanced Dental Assistant: This course follows on from the Basic (initial employment training) course completed after Recruit training. This is a mandatory course enabling, if successfully completed, the award of the required baseline ADF Dental Assistant qualification HLT45015 Certificate IV Dental Assistant (Radiography). Practice Management: This course trains personnel to supervise and manage a ADF or RAN Dental Department. Attendance is by selection only and for persons who have achieved promotion on merit to the rank of Petty Officer. The course is to be completed about 12 months after completion of the Basic (Initial Employment Training) Dental Assistant course. The course is six weeks long during which students live-in at the ADF Dental School HMAS Cerberus. The Advanced Dental Assistant course is the second part of the baseline ADF Dental Assistant qualification, HLT45015 Certificate IV Dental Assisting. During this course training content includes Infection Control and Radiography, including taking Dental X-Rays. Upon successful completion a student is eligible for the award of a Nationally Recognised HLT45015 Certificate IV Dental Assisting (Radiography) by the RAN. Practice Management: This course is designed for persons to be the Practice Manager of a ADF Dental Department. Such positions are usually held if an individual achieves promotion on merit to rank of Petty Officer. This course is blended, comprising two residential live-in phases at the ADF Dental School HMAS Cerberus with time in-between requiring distance learning whilst in the individuals posted workplace location. This course in itself is NOT Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) under the Commonwealth Governments VET system, but aligned to ADF and RAN workplace capability requirements. Employment Location Qualified All sailors will serve in fleet units and shore establishments on a rotational basis. National Qualifications Other Ranks (Non Technical) On completion of relevant employment training you will be eligible for civil accreditation as follows:
