3 St John Ambulance (Australia) in the Northern Territory St John Ambulance (NT) Inc operates under the guidance of the St John Ambulance Board. The comprises of seven members drawn for various disciplines within the general community of the Northern Territory. The primary function of the Board is to provide strategic management guidelines and endorse policy decisions affecting the entire operations of the organisation. Within the Northern Territory, St John Ambulance has five separate but closely related departments: Ambulance Service First Aid kit sales and restocking service Training and Public Education Department Volunteer First Aid Services Workshop facilities available to the public The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the Chairman of the St John Board and is accountable for the conduct and co-ordination of the St John Ambulance activities throughout the whole of the Territory. 4 The Ambulance Service The Northern Territory Government contracts St John Ambulance Australia, to provide an Ambulance service for the people of the Northern Territory. The area of responsibility is large although the population is small. Not all areas are accessible by road, these remote locations are serviced by Careflight in the Top half of the Territory and the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Central Australia. Ambulance Communications Our 000 Emergency Response Communications centres are located in both Darwin and Alice Springs and provide communications for the Ambulance Service throughout the whole of the Northern Territory. Ambulance trained Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) operate these centres on a 24 hours / 7 days a week rotating roster. Ambulance Centres are located in Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. 2

5 Essential pre-requisites To be considered for employment as a Qualified Paramedic, you must: Hold a current authority to practice as a Paramedic from a recognised State or Territory Ambulance service. Possess (or be willing to obtain) a NT C Class Drivers Licence and have a good driving history. Provide current police clearances, i.e. criminal, traffic infringements, traffic convictions (three separate documents). These may be obtained from your local police station. Hold a valid Working With Children clearance (Ochre card). Have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Possess initiative, confidence and have a commitment to learn. Have a genuine desire to care for people in need. Have general computer literacy. Be a permanent Australian resident, or be willing to undergo the immigration process. New Zealand candidates will need to provide a copy of their current passport, showing expiry date. Provide evidence of current scope of practice Services Operations Manager or Services Clinical Governance, Education or Development unit. Candidates must give an undertaking that they will: Be prepared to accept a posting of up to two years at a regional location. Work according to the terms and conditions as prescribed by St John NT Paid officers are currently located in the following locations; Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek. Should you be interested in working at a regional location for a longer period, you may apply to do so once you have successfully completed your initial two year posting. 3

6 The Selection Process 1. Forward a current resume to Human Resources along with a copy of your current Authority to Practice with a recognised State or Territory ambulance service. You are also required to submit copies of: Applicants for positions as Qualified Paramedic with St John Ambulance NT will initially be posted to a regional location (Katherine, Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy or Alice Springs). Upon completion of two years in a regional location, employees are eligible to apply for vacancies that may arise in other centres e.g. Darwin. C class drivers license Birth Certificate or Passport National Criminal Police Clearance & Working With Children clearance Relevant ambulance qualifications and academic transcripts Proof of residency if not born in Australia 2. Please note that it is vital that the application be thoroughly completed to the best of your knowledge. You must meet the pre-requisites for your application to be considered (refer essential prerequisites). Applications should be on A4 pages, stapled, please do not bind. 3. Once suitable vacancies arise, you may be contacted for further information and to attend an interview. 4. Candidates that are shortlisted must undertake psychometric testing, and a Medical and Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE), at which time reference checks will be conducted. The FCE is a test of a candidate s capacity to undertake work postures and work activities. Candidates will be asked to undertake a range of activities including stooping, reaching, squatting, lifting, performing transfers (floor and bench height), carrying, and simulated stair carrying with a load. The Medical and FCE takes about two hours to complete and is done by an external provider, Jobfit Australia Pty. 5. Following completion of step 4, candidates will be contacted and advised whether they have been successful in their application. Candidates may be offered employment or placed in a recruitment pool for future employment. 4

7 Conditions of Employment Wages Rates of Pay (effective October 2015) for Qualified Paramedics in Darwin, Alice Springs & Katherine are as follows: Classification Para 0-2 Para 2-3 Para 3+ ICP 0-2 ICP 3+ Gross Pay Annually $64, $66, $67, $74, $83, N.B. Tennant Creek and Nhulunbuy rates differ from those given above. Roster Allowance 34.4% Hours of Duty The ordinary hours of work are an average of 38 hours per week, to be worked in a roster comprising two consecutive days and two consecutive nights followed by four days off, over a 15 month period. Probation A probation period of six months applies from commencement of employment. Annual Leave 9 weeks per annum. Personal/Carer s Leave 15 days per year. Long Service Leave Thirteen weeks after ten consecutive years service then six and half weeks after every subsequent five years service. Superannuation St John NT contributes 9.5% to AustralianSuper (or nominated superfund) on behalf of employees 5

8 Salary Packaging Employees may participate in salary packaging through an external provider. Salary Packaging benefits include access to: $9050 per annum towards living expenses $5000 per annum meal entertainment card $5000 per annum entertainment hire/leasing benefits Remote Area Housing benefits are also available to all employees (excluding the Darwin area). Health and Wellbeing St John NT provides assistance with the reimbursement of gym memberships and Employee Assistance Programs. Income Protection Salary St John NT employees are covered under the organisation s Continuance Insurance Policy up to the age of 60. Other Benefits St John NT employees are eligible to receive a DEFCOM discount card, and can benefit from discounted vehicle servicing at St John workshops. Ambulance Usage No cost if a St John NT Ambulance Service ambulance is required for self and/ or dependent family. Termination Employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period in accordance with the St John Ambulance Australia (Northern Territory) Inc.
