7 SELECT TRANSLATION SERVICE Patent Pending A Unique Online Translation Solution STS is a remarkable tool. It can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars! That s how one client described his experience with Select Translation Service (STS). At LSI we avoid waste, and when we observed time and again many thousands of pages translated at great expense while only a small fraction were important, we decided to work on a solution. Our efforts culminated in the STS system, which resolves the dilemma of how to optimize low quality machine translation and expensive human translation by providing very convenient fine tuning that greatly lowers the overall cost, typically 50% of human only translation. This is accomplished by the user ordering the translation quality level that best fits a particular file or batch of files by selectively applying: 1. Customizable high quality machine translation (MT) as a baseline, usually sufficient for most of the documents and very low cost; 2. Editing of the MT at either a light or full edit level, as warranted, to produce correct meaning of the information at an average 50% savings compared to the cost of human translation; 3. Stylistic human translating (not based on MT); 4. Human translating with verification and composition editing of the most important documents. The user is guided by samples and cost estimates to decide which of the above options will yield optimum results for various choices of quality, delivery time, and cost. With this optimization the user will shorten deliver time and not overspend. It can be done on a file by file basis or in batch mode. How It Works STS is a highly secure software system that exposes a convenient application programming interface (API) that can be easily integrated directly with a client s platform or via plug-in applications. Registered users can get direct online access to STS. The user begins by ordering MT, available for more than 30 foreign languages (see list below many others also available on request). Since the accuracy of MT is very limited, human work is necessary for documents that seem relevant. STS provides two levels of post-editing of the MT: a light edit (>85% correct meaning) and full edit (>95% correct meaning). Samples and associated cost estimates of the different levels guide the user in choosing which level is needed for one or a batch of documents. For important documents, the user can order a more stylistic translation performed by a human translator without any underlying MT.
