16 The MLSC Invests to Help Life Sciences Companies Grow Objective: Provide funding and incentives to accelerate the formation and growth of life sciences companies in Massachusetts Business Plan Competitions: Funded $545,000 in sponsorships Accelerator Program: Working capital for early-stage life sciences companies $16.2 million in loans awarded to 25 early-stage companies SBMG Program: Funding to match federal small business grants (SBIR & STTR) $4 million awarded to eight life sciences companies Tax Incentive Program: Incentives for companies to locate and grow jobs in MA MLSC can commit up to $25 million/year 73 active awards totaling $75 million to companies that have created or are promising to create more than 2,800 jobs 16
17 The MLSC Capital Program Bolsters Infrastructure Across the Commonwealth Objective: Expand capital and infrastructure resources available across Massachusetts to support life sciences research, development and commercialization To date the MLSC has committed more than $330M to capital projects across the state Basic infrastructure Cutting-edge research laboratories Unique biomanufacturing resources Incubator spaces UMass Amherst received a $95-million Capital Grant from the MLSC in June 2013 to fit out and equip a substantial portion of the university s new $157-million Life Sciences Laboratories, pictured above. 17
