Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Graduate Program Program Goals and Design: The mission of the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Graduate Program is to prepare Ph.D. and Master of Science graduates for the increasingly complex and integrated research in pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnological environment. This integrated, multidisciplinary program will provide a student-centered learning environment and will produce new professionals with both broad and in-depth training, preparing them for work as part of an interdisciplinary research/development teams. Faculty from the departments of chemistry, pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, physiology and pharmacology, and pharmacy practice bring their research interest and expertise to the program. Students are encouraged to combine the talents of the faculty into a unique, student-centered and interdisciplinary program that will meet their individual education goals. The Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Graduate Program is closely tied to industrial interests and trends and is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of the pharmaceutical and/or chemical sciences. The program offers students 5 degree options in 5 research areas offered through 4 departments. In addition to courses in each research focus area, students receive general training in: industrial process and methodology; laboratory management, risk management and safety; instrumentation and laboratory techniques; statistics and experiential design; ethical and legal aspects of scientific inquiry; exposure to the basic and clinical sciences related to the pharmaceutical industry; and experience in professional presentations and data summaries.
Degree Options: 1) Ph.D. Traditional research-intensive program with in-depth training and scientific independence Focused research areas based on scientific problems; transcending academic disciplines Provides particular strengths in pedagogical and presentation skills; well suited for instructional positions in higher education. Distance learning options are available for employee groups at current work site 2) Traditional Thesis M.S. Thesis; approximately month program Designed for individuals seeking research focused training, scientific independence, and/or preparation for an eventual Ph.D. program Training in teaching and laboratory skills Optional external internship 3) Accelerated Non-Thesis M.S. Non-Thesis; 16-month program Designed as a professional M.S. program; closely related to the trends and needs of the pharmaceutical and chemical industries to provide practical knowledge and experience Required external internship; possibly as part of the student s current employment Distance learning options are available for employee groups at current work site 4) Dual PharmD/MS This dual degree option provides the features of the professional Doctor of Pharmacy degree with the research components of the Master of Science Designed to be completed in less than four years 5) PharmD/PhD This dual degree combines the features of the professional Pharm.D. Degree with the teaching and research components of the Ph.D. Offers a special opportunity to persons who know they want to extend their professional pharmacy training into a career in teaching and/or research. Designed to be completed in five years. During years one and two, students concentrate on the Pharm.D. Curriculum, but take graduate level elective courses where ever possible. Year three of the program is devoted wholly to graduate course work and research. In year four, students are assigned experiential sites in the Stockton area and complete the requirement for the Pharm.D. Degree. The State Pharmacy Board Exam may be taken in June of the fourth year. The fifth year of the program is devoted to research and writing of the dissertation.
5 Research Focus Areas Offered through 4 Departments: The Pharmaceutical and Chemical Science Graduate Program allows students to select one of five highly sought after focus areas offered through four of the University s science departments. Bioanalytical and Physical Chemistry Investigation of chemical, biochemical and biomedical questions using a broad range of computational and experimental tools including state-of-the-art instrumentation, synthetic methods and molecular techniques. This area of focus is offered in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry* Drug Discovery and Chemical Synthesis Discovery and development of new chemical entities from (synthetic and natural product sources) as potential drugs; new methods of chemical synthesis and structural elucidation. This area of focus is offered in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry/Pharmaceutics and Medicinal Chemistry* Drug Targeting and Delivery Design and application of new systems for optimizing drug delivery to specific organs or other biological targets. This area of focus is offered through the Department of Pharmaceutics and Medicinal Chemistry* Cellular Pharmacology and Toxicology Involves investigations using enzymology, cell cultures and laboratory animals, of the mechanisms by which drugs and other bioactive chemicals affect cellular processes and how drugs are metabolized. This focus area is offered in conjunction with the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology* Translational and Clinical Studies Focus on clinical areas in pharmaceutical sciences and the translation of research findings between basic sciences and their application to drug therapy in patients. This area of focus is offered through the Department of Pharmacy Practice* *Applicants should indicate on the application that they are interested in applying to the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Science Program in addition to the Department of their desired area of focus (e.g. Pharmaceutical and Chemical Science Program, Department of Chemistry).
Faculty To continue and reinforce the multidisciplinary learning experience several experienced, high-caliber faculty join forces to teach, mentor, and conduct research with students. Faculty come to the program from several departments within the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and College of the Pacific s Department of Chemistry. For information about our Faculty Research and Publications please visit our Web page at Industrial Advisory Board: The program is closely aligned with industrial interests and guided by an external advisory board consisting of scientists, managers, practitioners and Pacific alumni from pharmaceutical, biotechnical and chemical companies as well as research institutes and other universities. Members of the Industrial Advisory Board include: John Barr, Vice President Research and Development, Advanced Polymer Pharma, Inc. David Bennet, Director Pharmaceutical Development, Nektar Therapeutics Bret Berner, Vice President Product Development, Depomed, Inc. Terry Burkoth, CEO, Paceline Consulting Bhaskar Chaudhuri, President and CEO, Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences. 7 Financial Assistance: A majority of students receive financial assistance in the form of teaching assistantships which include full tuition remission and stipend. Students in dual degree programs pay tuition during years one and two of the program which involves the Pharm.D. curriculum. During years three through five of the program, students will receive tuition remission in the clinical rotation of the Pharm.D. program and will be granted teaching assistantships which include full tuition remission and a stipend when they are in the graduate program. Students needing financial assistance must submit an application for teaching assistantship and meet all GRE test score requirements. The application is available on the Graduate School Application Forms web page at International Students seeking financial assistance must meet minimum teaching assistant (TA) TOEFL scores in addition to GRE scores. International students must also submit a Certification of Finances form and bank or sponsor documentation. Although full tuition remission and a stipend are often awarded, U.S. Visa requirements state that students must have some financial support outside of university support in case of an emergency. As of March 2005 the Certification of Finance form required Certification of at least $2000 U.S for students applying for a TA. Certification of the full tuition and living expense amount is not required if applying for a TA, otherwise, full tuition and living expenses outlined on the Certification of Finance form must be shown and certified. If students need guidance or a sample of how to fill out the Certification of Finance form please caporter@pacific.edu or kkassab@pacific.edu.
Admission Information How to Apply: For your convenience we encourage you to use our online application located on the Pacific Graduate School Website at pacific.edu/homepage/graduate/gradprospect.asp. Click on the Application/Admissions forms link and find the Area of Graduate Study and print the appropriate forms under What to Print/Submit.
